  1. Does anyone here have any experience or an informed opinion regarding the ION USB turntable? This link shows it retails for less than $100. I am a little leery of it at that low of a price. But if it is good quality, there is one available locally for $40, in a never opened box. http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-ION-TTC-LIST?SRC=D0501PG0HAMS0000&utm_source=pricegrabber&utm_medium=feed&
  2. He will be missed! I will never forget the MNF bantering between him and the blustery Howard Cosell. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101206/ap_on_sp_fo_ne/fbn_obit_meredith

Hi Craig. We are playing at Sammons Center for the Arts this coming October 3rd. Aside from that I am looking for a club venue for the group to call home.

I am starting to practice in a trio setting again, emphasizing multiphonics and free playing. I led a trio when I was in Germany, and of course in Europe such playing is much more accepted. Over here not so much.

Anyway thanks for asking. I will let you know when something develops.

      Greg

Hi Craig. We are playing at the Meridian Room (on Parry by Fair Park) on Oct 2nd from 9-12. That is the night before we play Sammons. A tune up if you will, but the guitarist has a $ gig and won't be there. Just a 4tet this time.

  4. While in Vegas, I stumbled across a few LPs in a pawn shop. Among my purchases was this interesting side. I haven't dropped a needle on it yet; I just got home. JD King and his orchestra "Swingin' Saturday Night Dancer Party"(Tampa records TP27) w/ Joe Felix - piano, Dick Taylor - bass and trombone, and Nick Fatool - drums. Lover Come Back to Me Blue Moon Two Sixteen West Seven-O Cherry Pretty Blues Big Deal Boogie Hot Pepper Google shows that he was a member of Andy Kirk and Howard McGhee orchestras. Other than that, I find little info on this tenor sax man. One post did however describe him as being out of the Hawk school. Odd little find.
  5. orrow). Not that I NEED any more vinyl, but inquiring minds want to know. What is wrong with this function? I try to edit, and I can't see what I need to edit. It is like driving blind.
  6. While I was consulting with a friend via cell phone, another guy casually walked up. I saw his double take when he saw the price. Try as he might to appear disinterested, I knew he was circling in for the kill. So, I leaned over and removed the price tag. SOLD!
  7. I have been wanting a grand piano for a long time, but I never thought I could afford the luxury. Today while in a thrift shop I spotted an old Wurlitzer baby grand in pretty good physical shape. Of course it needs to be tuned, but it doesn't appear to be abused. All the keys are intact, the pedals are in working order and all the strings are there. I played throughout the entire range of the piano and all strings sound, and the pads mute properly. I know I am looking at expense to get this old girl up to pitch after it is moved to the house, but for a mere $300, I figured it was a no brainer purchase. Yeah, I know that a Wurlizter is no Steinway, but it works for me so far! Pics later.
  8. The late Dallas bandleader Durward Cline was quite well known for his unintentional maloprops. Once when asked about his girl singer he was heard replying "Well, she may be good, but she is no fried chicken" Attending the funeral of an identical twin, he approached the surviving twin and asked "Now, was it you or your brother that died?" He approached a crowd outside of his music store that had gathered around a man who had passed out. He was heard saying "Stand back; give half a man a chance!" At one particularly stressful commercial date, he was warned to keep his men in line. He went over to the orchestra and announced that the event organizor "will be watching us like we are hawks" and that "there will be no drinking before, during or after the gig" The list goes on and on. When Doc Severinson would come to Dallas, he always asked if there were any more Durward stories to share.
  9. Well, unless you specify an example it's rather moot point, ain't it? I don't know if this was discussed in here already, but there is an infamous recording of Freddie Hubbard berating a european audience. He is heard screaming racial epithets at the audience ("you white m.... f.....s!!") but I paraphrase!
  10. I felt the same after reading some of Wynton's first interviews. (this is "our" music, blah blah blah)
  11. Thanks! It looks like the scene will be as barren as the outlying desert. I will call the union and see if that is still happening. Thanks Paul!
  12. Could be a great opportunity. http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/muc/2075406047.html By the way, these aren't mine. I merely saw the ad on Craigslist Dallas.
  13. I will be flying to Vegas next monday for a handful of Western Swing gigs. What is the state of jazz in Vegas? Any casino showrooms have big bands playing? I do know I am going to visit the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop (Pawn Stars home base) as well as the Pinball Museum. When I learned there was such a place, I lit up....no, that pun was not intended. http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ We will be in town for 5 days, and will be staying at the Southpoint Casino/Hotel. Fortunately we play at the same place, so no time will be spent shuttling around.

  16. There isn't anything on the jacket that indicates these aren't licensed for airplay.
  17. I stumbled across a stack of old comedy LPs the other day (at salvation army). Three very old Redd Foxx LPs (dootone records) plus a f ew Moms Mabley records as well (Chess). As an aside, I had to buy this one: Foster Brooks sings.
  18. I don't know how you cadaver say that. Say it slow a couple times...
  19. The Dallas Salvation Army store LP bin was fertile today! Usually you get the standard run of Mantovani, etc. Today there was some real unique finds: Odell Brown and the Organ-izers "Ducky" (Cadet) Melvin Sparks "Sparkplug" (Prestige) Luis Azcarraga and his hotel panama conjunto "El Panama Fiesta" (Panama Artists)
