  1. Damn. One of my favorite jazz composers. A real original.
  2. Comparing Sonny to the other 4 recipients is a waste of time. These are all valid arfists in their own genres. Whether or not we like their music is unimportant. Barbara Cook is certainly a tremendously talented singer and Broadway star. Had anyone really listened during the course of the her tribute video, they would have clearly heard what an incredibhle voice she had. Phenomenal control and intonation. I thought it was cool that Patti LaPone (among others) participated in her tribute. Broadway heavyweights all. Neil Diamond? I never really thought much of his music, even when my then-girlfriend tried to recruit me into the legions of his fans. She pointed out to me that he released a record called "The Jazz Singer". I never could get her to understand the difference between a real jazz singer and a pop singer. Oh well. His music still isn't on my radar, but why should I poo poo on it. Millions liked his songs - and granted they were well written. Sweet Caroline? Definitely a melody that sticks in your head. Earth shattering? No. Pleasant? Yes. YoYoMa? I love his music, and his attutude towards it. I have listened to many of his CDs (in my collection) and I appreciate his artistry. As I appreciate his all embracing approach towards other genres. A nobody? Small peanuts? Hardly. It ain't all about jazz. I wish it was, but we remain in the minority here.
  3. This TT turns wax at 16, 33, 45 and 78. As soon as I invest in a voltage transformer I will pop for the requisite cartridge/needle so I can play the 78s that I can't seem to get rid of. I decided if they are here with me, I may as well embrace them. I have found some interesting things among them.
  4. I have had my copy for a long time now. Slide Hampton!! I was in Maryland 2 weeks ago and spent a day down near the inner harbor at Feld's Point in Baltimore. There are some eclectic shops down there, including a couple used LPs shops. I spotted another copy of The Flip while in one store. I would have grabbed it but I was on a budget and I already have one copy. I am way past buying back up vinyl copies! My sister was with me and she offered to by me a couple of LPs for Christmas. Tough call, but I decided on a Grachan Moncur's BYG LP "One Morning I waked up Very Early" and Lockjaw Davis' big band side (Prestige) The Flip certainly isn't one of Hank's best ones, but I like it for what it is.
  5. I agree with the editing comment. One less song so the others could have been done right would have been better. Re: the other recipients numbers not being edited, I think that one of the songs sung in tribute to Barbara Cook dropped the second A section and went directly to the bridge. Which tune? I forget. I am pleased that Sonny got his cultural props on the Big Stage, but he really got the old slam bam thank you ma'am treatment. Pearls before swine is all I can say.
  6. First post in awhile. While on vacation in Florida, my in-laws passed along the turntable in their rarely used system. Never one to pass up free TTs, I loaded her up and drove back home (today in fact; I just got back to Texas....helluva drive!) This TT looks a lot like a 70s Dual. It is made by Grundig, Model PE2010. (on the underside,. it indicates PS5) I haven't done much research at all, but I get the idea it is a keeper. The base is heavy and seems to be very stable. I have yet to hook it up or even check out the stylus. I needed a spare to hook up to my PC so I can burn copies of my LPs to hard drive, and I am pretty excited about this one. Anyone familiar with Grundig stereo gear, specifically turntables? Thanks!
  7. A buddy has asked me to assist in helping him sell a pair of high end Bozak speakers that belonged to his father in law. Reportedly they are in perfect working order. I cannot personally vouch for them since I have only seen the pics up until this point. If anyone is interested (preferably in this area), please contact me. If we arrive at a price that is acceptable to the owner, then everyone is happy. That said, I haven't talked price with him, so I have no clue as to what is fair. I do know that these cabs are serious mofos! Email me for pics. They are Bozak model B-4000 Contemporary. By the way, if any readers here see this thread and have knowledge of these brand and model speakers, please let me know what you know!
  8. http://dallas.craigs...2413255303.html It is in Tuscon AZ I have absolutely no idea what a good price is. I am just throwing this out. I saw the ad while browsing.
  9. There is a new 'record store' on the downtown Denton square. I was hanging with my kid when I discovered it. Not expecting much I went in. To my surprise they do have vinyl....new vinyl. But of course no jazz there. I did spot a used bin and what did I stumble across? A real local score! Well it isn't an early leader date. I was wrong there. David Newman "Front Money" / Warner Bros 1977 Recorded in Dallas Arrangements by D. Newman, Roger Boykin and Claude Johnson (the latter two also Dallas local players) David Newman - alto, tenor, soprano sax and flute R. Boykin - bass/guitar William Richardson (W.A.) - drums C. 10. This is a link to a handful of videos recorded at my quintet's last gig at the Dallas Museum of Arts. Shinju and Junko, two friends all into anything jazz in Dallas recorded the dvd for us. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=greg+waits+quintet&aq=0&oq=greg+waits+
  11. Lakewood B&G Dallas gets one more chance. JUNE 7th, tuesday night / 8 pm - 12 depending upon turnout My Quintet: Greg Waits - trb/guitar Jim Sangrey (yeah, that Sangrey) Michael Palma - piano Lyles West - bass Andrew Griffith - drums $5 cover ;/ GREAT grill and decent beer selection. Friendly barkeeps. Come on by, listen, hang out and visit. http://www.lbgdallas.com/location.htm www.gregwaitsmusic.com on youtube "greg waits quintet"
  12. I was just asked by a bass player friend of mine if I knew - or if I could find out who - was in Ella's band for her final Carnegie Hall concert in 1991. I see no evidence or online mention of the concert being recorded and released (as her '73 C.H. appearance was). Anybody know? Maybe you were there!
  13. Well. I usually wait until the audience has a chance to get settled in, but if you say so, ok! Well, the news just gets better and better. I went to the club to sort out things yesterday. I was informed that "since it is so hard to draw a crowd for a jazz group" we would be given a mere hour to play. Odd, since when we last played there, the crowd was great, and the club mgmnt couldn't wait to get us booked for another date. The booking manager went on to somehow justify such bs by saying that "we need to pay the sound man" Duhhhh. No respect I tell you. And none for the kind folks who were coming out to see us. I have heard from several folks who said that they intended to come by, but not to hear us play just one set. It takes each of the band members between a half hour to an hour to get to the club, another 20 minutes or so to get set up - and that is optimistic - and then we play for an hour only? I respectfully declined. We will be back....somewhere! So as to make it official, we are not playing at Lakewood B&G wednesday. Sorry Al!
  14. It looks like we are returning to Lakewood Bar and Grill (Dallas) You know we always look forward to it, because the hang is so good, plus the grill is terrific! Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, April 20th. We originally had planned on playing the entire night, but as it turns out we are playing from 8 – 10 only. So be sure and make it out early! http://www.lbgdallas.com/index.htm The group: Greg Waits - trombone Jim Sangrey – tenor sax Michael Palma – piano Lyle West – bass Dennis Durick We hope to see you there! Support live jazz! Greg www.gregwaitsmusic.com
  15. It is obvious that the Rangers will not have any credibility for awhile - despite their having taken the AL pennant. Decades of failure and frustration are not so easily forgotten. But a 3/0 start is a nice place to begin. Time alone will tell what sort of character and depth this pitching staff will display. WIll Lee be that missed? We'll see! Wherever the chips fall, I do like Wash. This guy is the real deal.
  16. Here is a link to 4 videos of my group posted onto Youtube. The performance was at the Dallas Museum of Art back in February. The recording was made and given to me courtesy of one of Dallas' biggest jazz fans and supporters Mr Shinji Otsu http://www.youtube.com/user/56conn6h?feature=mhum#p/u/2/P7y64pcCQ7E You'll see Mssr Sangrey as well as Lyles West (bass), David Zoller (piano), and Dennis Durick (drums). Of course that is me on trombone. Sorry the audio isn't better. Feel free to comment (here or there!) If this is posted in the wrong place since the event has passed, could a moderator move it to more appropriate thread site? Thanks! Enjoy
  17. I love this. It is regrettable that such a pretty tune was used on a spoof. But it is funny as hell! http://casavaldez.posterous.com/the-minutes-go-like-hours-when-you-sing
  18. What is a fair going rate for an American made Fender Princeton Chorus (non tube)? I find myself playing the tele not as often as my acoustic. Having some minor bills to knock out, I want to sell this and at a later date shop around for a nice low watt tube amp. Opinions graciously received!
  19. I guess "great" is a matter of opinion, but I located these LPs today at an estate sale. It was run by the son's of the deceased, and I think that is why prices were so low. These all were $1. each. "The Night Blooming Jazzmen under the dir. of Leonard Feather" / Mainstream MRL 348 feat: Blue Mitchell Ernie Watts Fred Robinson Chino Valdes Paul Humphrey Maz Bennett Al McKibbon Kitty Boswell Reggie Moore "Wishbone" / Mainstream 341 feat: R. Moore Hank Haynie Chip Lyles Chuck Wayne trio "Tapestry" / Focus FS333 Chuck Wayne - gtr Ernie Furtado - b Jimmy Campbell - dr Les Paul ands Mary Ford "Warm and Wonderful" / Columbia CS8488 Dave Brubeck Quartet "The Riddle" / Columbia CL 1454 feat: Bill Smith clarinet/comps by Bill Smith Spike Jones New Band / Liberty LST-7349 "Washington Square the new band of Spike Jones" / Liberty LST-7338 West, Bruce, and Laing "Whatever Turns You On" / Columbia (Windfall) KC 32216 feat: Lesley West Jack Bruce Cork Lainge This LP was recorded in 1973, one year after Mountain had broken up, and one year before they reunited. The inclusion of Jack Bruce (Cream!) instead of Pappalardi is interesting.
  20. Found this online tonight. Some good stuff, incl Blakey Mosaic. http://www.shopgoodwill.com/auctions/41x-Jazz--Blues-Vinyl-Lp-Record-Collection-Lot-7216620.html#des
  21. Amen to not lending LPs out. I made that mistake once too often. Even with the most trusted friend, shit happens. I entrusted my entire collection to a buddy when I moved to Europe years ago, knowing I'd be back in a year or so. Of course, LPs came up missing. I didn't have a physical inventory list of what I had, but I always could tell when something was missing! Collector's 6th sense I guess. And sure enough, the missing LPs were among the rarest and hardest to replace.
  22. Wasn't there a race comic named Butter Bean? I could swear I saw some clips once. But I can't find any evidence, even on Youtube!
  23. I'm glad I waited. My wife gave me one of these cool little gadgets. Hello downloads! http://www.alesis.com/phonolink Okay Sangrey, on the next out-of-towner we get with BVS, I will have those Redd Foxx and Moms Mabley LPs on Ipod!
  24. Yeah, the ice bowl was the first game I really can say I remember watching. One year my dad went to an auto dealership promotional thing, and he brought home a signed B&W of Chuck Howley. At the time I thought how square the guy looked, what with that crew cut hair. Later I realized what a great athlete he was too.
