  3. Okay, now I have found guitar corner again I will repost. I need help IDing this Telecaster knockoff. It is the 3rd pic. (obviously!) http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=92154&id=556210358&saved#!/album.php?aid=92154&id=556210358 It needs a little TLC, but actually plays well in tune as is. I just need to change out the pots and the three way switch. Check out the humbucker in the neck position. Different that way. Not bad for $75.
  4. Well I guess you'll have to rely on Wynton to tell you what he sounded like!
  5. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/emd/1624671170.html Not a bad selection. Good prices. Nope, I don't know who this is!

Note the bad grammar: "Please enter as more information as possible to provide your complete identification and to activate all the features of the new system" WTF? "Please enter as more information..." There is no way in hell I provide my SS# on a page that looks like this. Plus, they ask for the account pin #? Uh huh. I have seen spoof Ebay pages that you link to (which is the dead giveaway that it is a spoof), but on this one, I was directed to it from Ebay's main page. Hmmmmm Any thoughts? I have three things selling now and I need to get signed in.
  7. This is a little late in coming to you, but here goes! My new quartet The Greg Waits Group Trombone/compositions: Greg Waits Tenor Sax: Jim Sangrey Bass: Aztic Drums: Garry Granger is playing at Cold Fusion Lounge in Denton Thu Dec 17th (tonight!) Cold Fusion is a nice hang, and it is right next to a very good pizza joint! 212 W. Hickory, just a block or two off the square. We start at 10
  8. Roswell is a national treasure! And a helluva nice man. I had the pleasure and honor of interviewing him as the basis of a paper I was assigned to write in a Jazz history class while working on my MM. (I talked the school into letting me use their phone) It took awhile to convince his now-late-wife Moselle that I wasn't intending to profit financially from any contact, but once I won her over, she allowed me free access to the Man. He has such a humble and self deprecating approach to life. And I sense a deep spiritual essence to him too. He is a wise old sage, in my opinion. I would love to jam with him! We have talked about getting together the next time I am back east. That is on my bucket list. Thanks for posting this thread Allen!
  9. Well, part of the problem here in the D/FW metroplex (I always hated that word) is that it is more or less a free lancer's scene. Everyone here is basically about hustling the next wedding, corporate gig, private party etc. It isn't about playing original music. So the pool of players you have to draw from - while it may be deep - doesn't as a rule consist of guys looking for creative scenes. That said, if I make the drive north to Denton, there is a butt load of eager young cats just dying to make a creative statement. They are young, inspired, and not yet jaded. I am playing a quartet date a week from tomorrow at a private residence (still on board Sangrey?) It is hosted by an artist/teacher and all around mover and shaker in the Dallas cultural scene. (what culture there is anywho). Our performance follows the art reception, and we are encouraged to play original music. As usual, being a friday night, the bass players I prefer to play with were committed to $$ gigs (more power to 'em; at least they didn't take the gig only to bail), so I called around and got a Korean exchange student at UNT to play, one extremely eager and very happy to do the gig, tip jar or not. I am a little less discouraged by the whole thing now. I have come to the conclusion that I have to build up a larger data base of phone numbers, and it will consist mainly of younger - yet very talented - college players. They are very good, but not yet so busy. It's all good....for now.
  10. I have been experiencing major hassles trying to keep my band going. While I understand guys not wanting to or not being able to commit time to low dollar creative music gigs, I still expect people to be good for their word. I can't begin to say how many times I have had the rug pulled out from under me prior to gigs by musicians. Coincidence or not, it always seems to be the bass players who bail. Just today I got in touch with a young up and coming Denton cat who agreed to do an upcoming gig with me. I wanted to touch base with him. (no pun intended...really!) When I remind him of the date, he tells me "I sent you an email awhile back telling you that something came up" Oh really?! Odd thing is, I never received his email. What the hell is wrong with using the phone, jackass?? If bandleaders are prone to developing ulcers, I understand why. This shit is killing me! I wish I was able to clone one or two of my favorite players and keep them safely housed and fed, and when a gig comes up I unchain them. I almost have come to the point where I flat out advise the flaky offenders that by not standing by their commitments, the word slowly gets out among other musicians that they cannot be relied upon. I guess that being a player of an indispensable instrument empowers guys into thinking that they can do whatever they want, because the phone will keep on ringing regardless. One thing about being a trombone player is that you have to be professional and do what the fuck you say you are going to do. It is hard enough being a full time player anyway. Okay I feel better now!
  11. Okay, okay don't slam me for this post! My 19 year old daughter is way into classic rock. When she found that the Doobie Brothers were coming to town, she told me about it (hint hint). So dad pops for tickets and we went to see them last night at Ft Worth's Bass Hall. I had seen the group in high school. What a tight show. They kicked ass. The group is very very tight. I did forget how loud a rock concert is though! I was somehow suspecting that as soon as the lights went dim at the beginning of the concert, people would start lighting up joints like in the old days. (I think my daughter was hoping that would happen). Nope, the old days are just that. Good show though. They don't sound dated at all.
  12. Oct 21st: we return to Sandaga's African Marketplace for our regular third Wednesday slot, 8 - 11. directions/map: http://www.sandagamarket.net/1883162.html Don't let the sea of warehouses put you off; this is easily safer than any club district in the area. It is worth the effort to come out! ________________________________________________________________________ Oct 28th: (Wednesday again) we'll be playing in Ft Worth at Scat Lounge for the first time, 8:30 - 12:30 Scat is a great environment for playing and I am really looking forward to the night. directions/map: http://scatjazzlounge.com/directions/ ________________________________________________________________________ My 'new' quartet: Greg Waits - trombone Jim Sangrey - tenor sax (what else?) Buddy Mohmed - bass Garry Granger - drums _______________________________________________________________________ Come on by! I am trying very hard to get this group tightened up so we can sit down and record very soon. The group is really popping, and I am very happy to have Jim and Buddy on board! Garry is no slouch either!

  14. The accordionist looks like a mechanic in Denton that used to work on my car.
  15. None on the calendar yet, but who knows. I still have the Yamulke from the last Jewish wedding I played.
  16. You got that right. I remember the old Recovery Room well. Those were the days. Arandis I never went to. I may have been in NY then. There was the ill fated "D' Jazz Club" which never had a good vibe. Too white bread for my tastes. Then the Jazz Connection on Lovers Lane. It was pretty good, but the location was all wrong.
  17. We will be playing at Scat Lounge in downtown Ft Worth on Oct 28th (again a Wednesday! Whats up with that!?) http://www.scatjazzlounge.com/ Scat Lounge is definitely more upscale than what we are accustomed to. I am looking forward to this date. Chances are we will be back at Sandaga the week before that (Oct 21st). The group will probably be the same. I will post a notice as the time draws closer. Thanks! And Jim...thanks man. I always enjoy hearing you play!
  18. It has been a "third Wednesday" of every month arrangement. The crowds have been all but non existent, but then again it is an anything goes deal. We have fun. Part of the problem with attendance is the location. It is the west end of the Dallas design district, but it looks a little spooky out there at night. Nothing but galleries and warehouses. I talked to a few people who had intended to come by. When they came down Levee street, they looked around and decided to just keep driving. Ironically it is probably safer than anywhere in Dallas. It is just deserted at night. By the way, Organissimo's own Big Al was in attendance and he stepped up to the plate! There was an acoustic bass in the back room and he offered to play. Check his fingers for blisters this morning! He is a trooper! Thanks Al...you were great!
  19. Garry is doing great. I didn't know you went to high school with him. I went to the same school, but my senior class was 4 years behind his. As usual, we outnumbered the audience, but not by much! The unfortunate thing was that the bass player bailed. His wife was late coming home from yoga (emergency?). The problem was he had the kids and couldn't just leave. Oh well. I have the worst problem with bass players. How soon will it be until I can clone one. Maybe I can get a tuft of hair from Ray Brown from someone......
  20. Yep, here is is. Excuse my blatant ad. Since we continue to outnumber the audience, I can tell either of two things. 1) The word isn't getting out that creative music is being played. 2) Creative music is being played! Come hear the Greg Waits Quartet @ Sandaga's African Market in Dallas this coming Wednesday, Sept 16th. 8 – 11:30 pm Located on 1325 Levee Street (1 block west of Industrial; 5 blocks south of Oak Lawn) Ph # (214) 747-8431 Greg Waits - trombone Jim Sangrey – tenor sax Jeff Eckels - bass Garry Granger - drums If you haven’t heard Jim, you are in for a rare treat. His is one of the most honest voices I've ever had the pleasure to share a band stand with. www.gregwaitsmusic.com Come support live jazz; it is worth the effort!
