  1. I guess that's why I added my little tongue in cheek last sentence. Though my not starting other threads has more to do with my lack of time than any lack of interest or motivation. Hmmm.... maybe I'll kick my ass into gear a little more to try to add some more to this board. On the topic, everyone watch out for Dom Minasi's next release: an organ group that's going to knock you on your proverbial ass.
  2. I'm amazed nobody has mentioned either Sam Rivers "Downstairs Blues Upstairs" included in the Mosaic box, or Bud Powell's "Un Poco Loco" from the Blue Note sides. These are both absolutely essential recorded documents of incredible bands working their way through interesting/difficult material.
  3. And as a PS, Mike already said there's a feature where musicians can add their own stuff, which is something Alan's doesn't have... that already seems like an interesting difference to me.
  4. As they say in the hip hop world.... "Y'all need to squash this shit." This little shitting on other peoples' sites is really childish, especially when neither Mike nor Jim have a problem with posting about their sites on each others'. If Mike called you a twit, 1) you need to get thicker skin; 2) you need to take it up with him in e-mail, but not take it out on his site, which he works really hard on. I agree that Alan has set up an excellent reference site for upcoming releases, etc, but who cares if Mike wants to try to do his own? As he says, maybe we'll find out about some new stuff there that Alan just doesn't have the time/interest to follow. Sounds good to me.
  5. One thing, as a mostly-lurker here, that I've never understood, is why the avant-garde (or whatever you want to call it) seems so centered on one thread. I know a lot of posters here (like myself) made their way from the BNBB, but the sheer length of it suggests that there's a lot of interest in it, and it could "infect" the rest of the board a little more. That's my 2c, without actually doing anything about it...
  6. I'm also curious if the moderators of this board asked Tom to host his own thread, which I assume is what Mike did at AAJ. Not saying that it's right the way he handled the situation, or right that he hasn't chimed in over here, just that I'm pretty sure his decision to participate in AAJ wasn't an intentional slap in the face to anyone here. Could be wrong though... I often am :-p.
  7. heh... i'm talking to my brother on AIM right now, and he said he got this and the new Sonic Youth for Father's Day. I hope when I have kids, they'll be the same way!
  8. If you don't mind me asking, where'd you go to high school? There was a kid a year below me in my high school with the exact same name. How common could that be?
  9. Some of the most hellaciously awful lyrics in rock history...
  10. "Begin the day with a friendly voice.... a companion unobtrusive Plays that song thats so elusive... the magic music makes your morning mood...." Both what is great and so unashamedly corny about them.. And I remember reading an interview a few years back with Geddy Lee (the bass player /singer for those blissfully unaware) where he was talking about how he thought they were getting "funkier" (his word) as time goes by. Said something to the effect of "Hey... we're middle aged white Canadians... there are a lot of obstacles" Still cracks me up.
  11. Oh, and gdogus and others that have asked: looks like sometime in the near future we are going to be able to run these at 128 kbps. I'll keep you updated as to exactly when it happens, but hopefully you'll read that as one of those "Ask and ye shall receive" moments....

  13. Definite kitsch factor here, but it's always struck me as overwhelmingly bad
  14. I bought from Atomic years ago (a Mosaic Mingus on Candid, IIRC), and they gave me a really hard time when I wanted to use an electronic check (this was in the days before Paypal was so widespread). The payment was fine, but due to some bank screwup it was delayed a day or two and they got really annoyed. Left a bad taste in my mouth, I remember.
  15. Just wanted to chime in here: I was in Borders the other day and they had this on a listening station. I flipped around, probably through 4 or 5 of the different songs, and all I can say is that synth or no synth the it-shay sounded tight to me. He lost me somewhere around Emancipation (which probably could have been a really great album with a little editing), so I was really happy to hear how to the point this is. A straight uncut slab of pure Prince. Yummy. Now if I had a little bit of bread to pick this bad boy up....
  16. I'm still sticking with the Spurs for the series. The Lakers put up a good fight, admittedly, but I think when they get back to San Antonio, Parker will regain some of that rhythm he had in the first couple of games, and some of the older Lakers will have a hard time keeping up. I have been wrong before, though, believe it or not....
  17. You underestimate the anal-retentiveness of some of your fellow board members, my friend
  18. There was a thread about this on the old BNBB, and I decided to jump the bandwagon and go for it myself. I got to the 2nd Miles Davis Quintet after about 3 months, and then just couldn't keep up with it. Had too many new things coming out that I wanted to hear, and I was missing the M's (Monk and Mingus). I always toy with the idea of trying again, or maybe just starting fresh from Davis onward.
  19. I didn't get the impression that Conn was giving up on Mosaic after only trying the Pearson Select. Seems to me that he's very knowledgable about them, and personally prefers to collect individual sessions. I don't agree (or I'm not as picky, perhaps), but I can understand his logic...
  20. All of Sacramento looked like they just smoked a dime bag in the 4th quarter last night... I can't believe that they lost that game. Seems to me like the Spurs are going to win their series, and I don't see any way that either Sacramento or Minnesota are going to make it through the conference finals against them. Other than that, I'm basically interested to see what will happen in the probable Indy-Detroit series. I hope the Pistons can pull it off, and for some reason I don't have utmost confidence in the Pacers continuing their current streak. We'll see...
  21. Just out of curiosity, did you happen to check the jazz selection at Tower Records? I don't know how it is these days, but I always used to give it a slight edge over J & R. Sounds like you had a great time, though! Me and the girlfriend are both going back next week for about 6 days. This thread has got me excited thinking about all the places I want to go!
  22. Wow, there should be an Organissimo celebration tonight, it being a Michigan-based board and all. NJ got embarrassed tonight, which makes me immensely happy, especially since Detroit is my favorite team left in the playoffs right now. GO PISTONS!!! P.S. Darko even got to play 2 minutes at the end, racking up 1 foul and not much of else.
  23. Although I agree that the winner of this series will probably go on to win the whole thing (though that's not who I picked in my fantasy league ), I have a hard time agreeing that the Lakers are one of the two best teams in the league right now. They were lucky, IMO, to get out of that Rockets series 4-1, with two critical games being a matter of a turnover here or a missed bucket there. The Rockets are far from a great team, and it seemed to me that the Lakers were having a very difficult time putting them away. By contrast, look at San Antonio - when faced with a very scrappy, full of heart Memphis team (certainly in the same league as Houston), they dispatched them handily with a resounding sweep. And I definitely think that Indiana, with their incredible depth, are a better team than the Lakers right now.
  24. I don't know which bank's ATM you were using, but I know that with most all of the banks I've ever been involved with, if you press "Yes" to "Make another transaction", etc. it always asks you for your PIN again, precisely to prevent these kind of mistakes. I'm not sure, but I wonder if the teller's cool reception to your honesty had something to do with this - as in you couldn't have done much with the situation anyway.
