Same here - don't have anything except for this hatOLOGY double CD, which I enjoy a lot. Gonna get this Atavistic reissue, since I am very much into Dyani's playing. But note earlier that I go through the recent pile of Atavistic stuff I bought (Global Unity Orchestra 1967/70; Brötzmann "More Nipples", Fred Van Hove Vogel stuff, Caspar Brötzmann and Mario Schiano reissue). These Atavistic guys are on fire.

I probably need to clarify the way the guarantee works - for each CD recommended here that you do not like, you pay a Funny Rat poster who recommended it a full price of the CD plus 10% (for emotional distress). The budget will go for further CD purchases (= more Funny Rat recommendations).

Vapirov has his own label AVA records, and you can purchase his CDs from him directly: http://www.vsjf.com/ava-frameset-1024x768_E.htm Alsa, one disc of the Golden Years of Soviet New Jazz Vol. I set on Leo is dedicated to Vapirov's music: http://www.leorec.com/?m=select&id=CD_GY_401/404

Thanks for posting this, ubu. That's very much a Leo-style letter - opinionated and non-compromising. As for me, - well I agree with most of the Hamislton's review.

New releaes from Black Saint / Soul Note / DDQ: http://www.blacksaint.com/sito/TOP_frame.htm Geisser/Mazzolla quartet definitely looks interesting (I am very curious to hear Mat Maneri and Scott Fields together), an this Ullman big band thng is quite itriguing as well. Long live Black Saint.

Anybody's familiar with Recorded releases? Look not bad at all. And one more: ZeroEggzie.
-
And how about Qoadlibet Recordings?
-
which ones do you consider to be pretty bad? I'm really just starting to explore his work and am curious which ones I should avoid at first. John, I will have to go through my Sun Ra collection - I haven't listened to anything by him for quite some time (except for outstanding solo recital on Leo (btw, I remeber liking his other solo disc on IAI much less - so here you go, an anti-recommendation) and "Heliocentric Worlds I" .
-
They don't - it's $6 per package plus $2 per disc. Still not too bad, given that $ is getting cheaper and cheaper. Not going to buy more Sun Ra till I digest 15 or so CDs of his that I have (I remmeber some of them being pretty bad), but will listen to my favorite (so far) Heliocentric Worlds Vol. I (ESP) this weekend.
-
Thanks John. A bit of good drone won't hurt, I guess. As for e-music - I just like having these little round shiny things with useless artwork and irrelevant liner notes. It's not really about the music - it's THE PRODUCT that matters, right?

I've got a lot of releases on VHF by Vibracathedral Orchestra, Flying Saucer Attack, Sunroof, Pelt, and L (the disc you linked to.) That's some good stuff! I probably would have enjoyed it even more without chanting, but I like it nonetheless. Our own Mr. Abbey distributes Vhf, I assume... err, no he doesn't. OK, I'll buy from the guys directly, even though this shopping cart of theirs does not seem to work.

And recommending another major label, here is VHF Records - I don't have anything by them yet, but looks interesting. A lot of Japanese guys. Randomely clicked on a recent release: http://vhfrecords.com/catalog/84.htm - some atmospheric, slow, bluesy acoustic guitar stuff - not bad at all.

From the website: ... this day and age we have access to excellent media for cheap recording and distribution of music: CD-R and MP3. Brax-Tone utilizes both; we make a CD-R version of every record on a print-on-demand basis, but we also make all the music available free for download on our website.... Nice.

My favorite Marion Brown is his duo with vibist (and flautist sometimes)) Gunter Hampel called Reeds & Vibes (IAI) - deep listening music. His duos with Mal Waldoron (particularly Songs Of Love and Regret) are also exquisite. Brilliant musician. I read he's been through some tough times recently - I wonder whther he is OK now and if we have a chance to hear him performing/recording again.

I would highly recommend listening to Too Beautiful to Burn, by Martin Siewert and Martin Brandlmayr. It is, in my opinion, the most beautiful disc on Erstwhile. If I had to choose one Erst to listen to that would be in the same vein as Wrapped Islands, this would be the one. I have it (bought it following your recommendation, btw), and I like it. Wrapped Islands is definitely less pretty, but more clever, IMO.
-
Have been listening to Polwechsel & Fennesz "Wrapped Islands" (Estwhile) recently - and that's some beautiful music. Not sure I will succeed in describing it, so here is a not too inromative AMG review and a page with samples from the Erstwhile site. Regardless of my inability to discribe the music - an uncoditional from me.

Thanks for review, Peter. Last time I saw the Tentet a couple of years ago, there were no special conducting tools. But Bishop indeed was one the most impressive soloists. Who's on drums now - Hamid Drake or Paal Nielsen-Love?
-
One of the Ganelin guys? Score one for the bearded gentleman in the produce section! I am not taking part in the BFT, but I can't refrain from complimenting Dmitry for his choice - you wouldn't excpect to hear Chakasin in a BFT on Organissimo!
-
Did you ever get a chance to hear this one? I just did for the first time and am very impressed. Just received this CD from CD Connection. Looks like they have more in stock (and don't forget this Cecil poetry disc as well).
-
Gokhan, thanks for overviews - looks like you had some great muscial impressions there. Stockholm is indeed a nice city - I am looking forward to returning there one day. Never heard of GUSH (although I know the members you mentioned from other projects) - anything you could recommend? Graves/Brötzmann pairing indeed seems a bit strange to me. Graves is an incredible musician (you should really check out his solo CDs on Tzadik!) - but somehow I just don't see his musical universe overlapping with Brötzmann's. Glad to hear thet Braxton was in good form - I was more than a bit disappointed by his chops (and ideas, actualy) after hearing 23 Standards amd duos with Andrew Cyrille. Did Gustafsson play the flutophone thing (a baritone saxophone reed-flute hybride) - that's some monstrous thingthat should be experienced live (ubu had to hold me from falling out of the chair when I heard it live during the Barry Guy concert)!

Many of the recent EMI, Warner, Sony and Universal (Philips, Decca, Deautsche Gramophone) releases are available here in brick-and-mortar stores for under $5. I've accumulated quite a sizable classical CD collectin this way. I am not sure I have much Erato stuff - are Varese CDs (Nogano conducting) on Erato - if yes, then I have some. Teldec, I have only a couple releases - Webern, I think.

That's a nice review. So there is a 4th disc by this trio on FMR... hmm....
