  1. I just bought tickets to Dircetions In Music show in March. Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker and Roy Hargrove playing the music of Miles and Coltrane. Has anyone seen this show? I know their show from a couple years back at Massey Hall is out on Verve. By the way, this is another reason I can't bring myself to bash the corporate devil named Walmart. If it weren't for the Walton Arts Center, acts like this would not be stopping in Fayetteville, Arkansas! They do a good job of bringing in Broadway shows and some decent music as well. Greg Osby, Dianne Reeves, Herbie Hancock et al, Elaine Elias to name a few.
  2. Yeah, before I found the Spanish Blue Notes and this recent batch of RVGs were announced, my "Holy Grail" discs were TRUE BLUE, BASRA, HOOTIN' AND TOOTIN' and CURTIS FULLER VOL 3. Now the big three on my wish list are TWO HEADED FREEP, FACE TO FACE and STEPPIN' OUT.
  3. I like Blue too but Tommy Turrentine is a close second in my book. BLUE JOHN is a fine example. I really need to get my hands on STEPPIN' OUT
  4. I too have resisted Dusty Groove. Along with not having any Mosaics other than Selects, my self control is beyond question!
  5. I'm on the fence too. My cart at BMG has 10-12 discs that I could queue up but for $4.99 I bet I could find a lot more! I guess I could upgrade to K2s. I don't have any at this point. What about the remastered Coltrane on Atlantic, are those worth upgrading? (at this point they haven't been worth $15 but $5 maybe so)
  6. If we're working ahead... 1/12/68 - Booker Ervin THE IN BETWEEN
  7. No, we used do all that and more down at the corner lot and this was in the day when the only endzone dancer was Billy "Whiteshoes" Johnson and the extent of celebration was spinning the football like a top.
  8. To me, it seems the announcers and the media in general have blown this thing WAY out of proportion. He didn't actually moon anyone! I heard about the fans'tradition of mooning the visiting team on the way out as well. In light of that, it looks like Moss was just having a little fun with the crowd. Yes these guys are professionals, yes they get millions of dollars, but let's face it. It's a GAME, games are FUN, if your having FUN you may want to express that with a CELEBRATION. Watch a group of 10yr olds play anything: basketball, football, video games, checkers - it doesn't matter, there will be taunting, smack talking, immature dances / gestures. It's part of the fun. Sports aren't just for the sake of the game, it's entertainment. These guys are entertaining. That's why a player can be worth millions to his team and sponsers. I don't see anything wrong with a little end zone celebration, even to the point of Joe Horn pulling out his cellphone to call his mom. Obviously there are limits and inappropriate gestures and vulgar language have no place. I'm not even sure Moss' gesture was over that limit in my mind. He didn't actually moon anyone!
  9. I'm going to admit something that may get me banished. I have been confusing THE LEGENDS OF ACID JAZZ series with the TALKN' VERVE: THE ROOTS OF ACID JAZZ! Both have hideous artwork by the way. Now, that I realize the gist of this series, I've got to get my hands on some. While checking on this, I noticed on the website of the label whose name must not be spoken, that they have made some out of print dates available for download. Not a bad idea and other labels could / should do the same. Included are titles by Baby Face, Shirley Scott, Stanley T, and man others. Any of these "must haves?" I just looked a little deeper and now I see they have made these titles available on itunes.com. This is not as enticing to me as having them available for download right there at their site.
  10. Interesting note (maybe not) OB GYNs count gestation from last menstrual period rather than from ovulation because ovulation can be so variable and most ladies can tell you when their last period was. So really they are counting two weeks (between mentruation and ovulation) that there is no pregnancy! Length of gestation is really 38 weeks. If you want to count from last menstrual period fine, but find another term for it. Don't call it weeks of gestation!
  11. Date of conception for a baby born Jan 10 is more like April 20th. That would be if you went to 40 full weeks gestation. Could even be later if the baby comes a little early. Two of my kids were conceived in March and were born October. The third was conceived in May and delivered Dec 31. All were a couple weeks early at least however.
  12. I never noticed Aric's title below his Avitar before now. That's classic!
  13. $146 current balance - 17 jazz guitar book - 35 Street of Dreams, I've Got A Woman, Blue Spirits (RVG) - from CD Universe ______ $ 94 I've decided to get Crescent, and Black Saint but these RVGs have spoiled me. I can't pay $15 bucks for a CD anymore, knowing I can get an RVG for <$10!
  14. We had a Viking stove / oven in our previous house. 6 gas burners, griddle, two ovens, commercial strength vent overhead. It was great for cooking but a pain in the rear to keep clean. In our new house we opted for just a Whirlpool countertop with 4 burners and now cleaning is a quick whipe off. Take that into consideration when you choose your stove. My sister has a Viking stove the is a bit easier to clean that she likes a lot. The appliance I really miss is our dishwasher. The builder picked it out (he was going to live in the house before he sold it to us) It was a Swedish brand I had never heard of before or since, ASKO. You couldn't overload the thing. No matter how you crammed in there, everything was always spotless. I know some dishwashers claim to be quiet (inclding the one we have now - big joke) but you couldn't tell this thing was on without looking at the lights or opening the door. I kid you not!
  15. Of course, due to our geographical disparity (yeah that's the ticket) we will not be able to do battle face to face. We will be ready to submit our song within the week. If the tune sounds like a Patton / Green / Dixon tune, I assure you it's just because of their heavy influence on our playing.
  16. Jan 9, 1970
  17. Jan 9, 1967
  18. Screw them! We can be Organissimo 2: Electric Boogaloo!
  19. Is it Tito Jackson? (I always was a good guesser!)
  20. We still talkin' about Cilantro?
  21. I play some guitar. (I can't really say I'm a guitarist, somehow that seems like I'm exagerating) I play mostly rock and blues and screw around on my computer recording studio program. Naturally, I have wanted to transition to playing more jazz. Since I don't really have the time to take some lessons, I have purchased several books in the past, most of which have been less than helpful. Up until now, this: Swing Guitar Essentials has been the most helpful book. There are some good lessons within, but I found that I could play the tunes in the book but it still didn't help me open my Jazz Fake Book and play tunes. BUT NOW I found this book! Hal Leonard Guitar Method JAZZ GUITAR (pictured below) This book is a great book for someone like me. Most books show you a thousand chords then set you off to play some tunes. The fingerings of the chords you choose to play may have you preforming fretboard heroics when actually you may only have to lift one finger to change chords. This book gives you the chords, then lets you get familiar with them by playing some jazz chord progressions (there is a companion CD with 99 tracks to play along with) It also has several complete tunes and discusses scales, modes, comping, chord melody, soloing. It's got it all! As you can see, I'm excited about finally finding a useful book to help learn jazz guitar and I just wanted to share the find with anyone interested. So with this book and lots of practice, and if Joe would get distracted from his studies by women or drugs or booze, or fame, I think I can beat him out as the guitarist for Organissimo in about 25 years! So look out Joe, I'm right behind you! Ok, well not RIGHT behind you. I can't really see you from where I am now but I know you're up there!
  22. The Funk/Rock group 311 which I enjoy quite a bit is from Omaha as well. And why are they making a big deal aobut the L.A. Carnival being from Omaha? Because it's freakin' weird for a funk band to be from Omaha!
  23. Because there is no way there are enough funky people in SASKATOON to form a funk band. A funk band can't just come from anywhere. Even here in the states. You say funk I think New Orleans, Memphis, Atlanta, Philly, New York, D.C., Detroit. Not San Antonio, Little Rock, Omaha, Seattle, CALGARY. If you need evidence, listen to the clips of the White Shadows or whatever, then go to the Galactic site and check out a few. ( I say Galactic to avoid the issue of race 'cause funk aint got a color, but it's got a smell!) - I just made that up by the way. You think that could be a catch phrase? Maybe my signature here?
  24. What? Am I a clown to you? Are You laughing at me?
  25. These coone cats are bigger than a great dane?
