Just kidding of course, I appreciate your info and take it as gospel truth. If you don't believe you can check out my half.com offerings for THINK, FUEGO and BOSS HORN.

I almost hate to mention this but... he did say the Gigolo was going to be RVG'd. I sold my copy and have been getting by with a CDR ever since! Where's my GIGOLO?

I'm really the guy this series is for. I've just been seriously into jazz for maybe 3-4 years, so I missed all those Conns and older McMasters that are out of print. Most titles that I had before I discovered the RVG series, were the essential Blue Note titles that I've since upgraded. Song For My Father, Soul Station, Blue Train, Sidewinder, and the like. Now, these are mostly titles that I've never even heard because they haven't been available since I've been collecting so I get excited with each batch. It's like Christmas for me every few months!!

I picked this one up yesterday. Expected the COME IN RED DOG... plus Greg Osby, which would have been very good I think, but this one is nothing like other Hunter I've heard. Much less groove to the music which is hard to imagine as Charlie's music is so groove oriented. Through about track 4 I was contemplating my options for unloading it. The second half of the disc was bit better and maybe the first half will grow on me. I'll give a few more listens. Still prefer COME IN RED DOG THIS IS TANGO LEADER.

Judgement, Boss Horn, Big Beat, Oblique, Fuego! Sounds like a great batch. I'm suprised by Think as well. I'm sure my recent acquisition of the title (it's in the mail as we speak) played a large role in this one coming out on RVG.

I've rented a couple movies lately that had some reference to jazz. First was Collateral where Tom Cruise is a hitman and he offs this trumpet playing club owner who was magically playing Spanish Key just like Miles but he only needed a bass player, a drummer and a sax man who didn't even have the horn anywhere near his mouth! I know the movies are make believe but at least use music that the band depicted COULD be playing. Either change the song or get more people up on the stage. The second movie was Anchorman where Will Ferrel breaks out with a crazy jazz flute solo at a club. Why did he have to play jazz? Why not polka or bluegrass? Why do they always have to pick on jazz?

What does everybody collect besides music?
scottb replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Along with my daughters, apparently I collect My Little Ponies and Barbies. My oldest is only 5 and I kid you not we have 30+ Barbies. I didn't think the Barbie stage came until later. If this isn't the Barbie stage yet, we're gonna be in trouble when it gets here. you gotta love SPARKLEWORKS! -
Got my package form deepdiscountcds.com today. BLACK SAINT and CRESCENT Whoa baby! The Coltrane is not totally unexpected as I have several other of his Impulse dates but BLACK SAINT is really a great work. I'm going to enjoy getting inside this one. Thanks for the recs on both of these. This has got me excited to see what else Impulse has to offer as well as additional Mingus. Perhaps that Passions of a Man boxed set is not such a bad idea.

Same story at work except replace roller rink with church. My reply was similar. "What church has an organist like that? I'm there!!"

Stew, welcome to the board! We are glad to have you. The McMaster / RVG debate has been discussed ad nauseum. I'm sure if you did a search you could come up with a wealth of material. The short story is that there are not a lot of McMaster fans on this board although there are a few. Most people agree that the early McMasters aren't too good and thus are glad to see the RVG series redo them. Many prefer the Japanese reissues both JRVG and TOCJ. Later McMasters are bit better but still inconsistent. These are usually Conns, nonRVG Blue Notes done in 20 or 24 bit and the Mosaic box sets. To me the RVGs are less compressed and have much more clarity in both the bass and high end. Some might say too much high end and have even speculated about RVG having some high frequency hearing loss. That's what I think are some the high points of the debate.

Well, today I kinda ran the idea of having an organ for the girls to play and this is what happened.... Me "Are you thinking about lettinng the girls take some piano lessons one day." Wife "Yes, if they want to. I thought Elise might start next year or so." Me "So I guess I'll start keeping an eye out for a good deal on an organ." Wife "There is no way I am going to have an organ in my house. EVER! Speaking of organs we have got to change church services to the early service because the organ in the late service is driving me CRAZY!" In other words my wife's conversion to organ fanatic is not going well to say the least. Yesterday, while getting ready for work I was playing John Patton's LET EM ROLL and "The Shadow or Your Smile" was playing when she walked in. After shooting me look telling me I had gone completely crazy, she says "This is Lawrence Welk music. You've become an old man. I'm going to start calling you Lawrence"

I think if I played for Portmouth I would refuse to wear the TY symbol on my jersey. How serious can you be taken when your dressed like a giat beanie baby?

Not me. I'm still trying to pull for Fulham but they play McBride less and less and are headed for a relagation battle I'm afraid. They steal a win just often enough to keep them in about 15th place. Today they had to squeak out a draw with Championship side Derby. It wasn't pretty. They seemed so uninspired, like no one cares. At the end they were wasting time instead of pressing for the winner. I guess I'm looking for another team to root for.

I'm not really on the inside so you guys would know better than me. It's just such a shame it's hard to accept. I'm an optimist to a fault, I guess. In the early '90s I even predicted a comeback for PETER FRAMPTON!! (I was actually half right, it was attempted, but it failed miserably!)

I'm not saying that I like American Idol or that it is proof that big bands are coming back. But at least on some level it shows that maybe "the industry" doesn't necessarily know what people really want. Yes, they know what 13 yr old girls want. But they don't seem to realize that the market IS 13 yr old girls because that is what they are catering to and there's a market out there that is not really being served or from their perpective, tapped into.
-
I think that backlash may not be too far fetched. To a degree, American Idol has been somewhat of a backlash against the industry. The masses have voted in new stars that would have NEVER made it in the industry without that show. Hopefully, the industry is taking note of this and realizing that the average Joe (sorry Joe) does appreciate talent and is not as caught up in all the image and hype as they think. If the show didn't get their attention, maybe the sales achieved by Ruben and Clay and Kelly and probably Fantasia and even Huang (just kidding) just might.

Jazz Kat, while you're waiting on your copy of Boogaloo Sisters you can at least check out the Christmas tunes. click here

This has been a valuable lesson in human development for me. Apparently the detection and compresion of sarcasm doesn't occur until sometime after... well at least age 15. (How old was Cooltrane?) I present my apologies to anyone who I have offended or even mildly upset by my reckless use of sacasm (I would prefer to call it wit but that is likely giving myself too much credit) I have no beef with anyone here, I enjoy your company, I want you all to stay, yadda, yadda, yadda. From now on, please realize that I'm never too serious and I am usually trying to be humerous to some degree.

Dude, chill out, come back to lowercase. I'm just having a little of the fun you are referring to. No one here thinks you're trying to "bring down the board." I was just referring to your "worst" Blue Note thread which, by no fault of your own, was beginning to get a little heated. And really not heated at all as we're all adults here... well, there are a lot of adults here, and if someone calls our favorite album a load of uninspired crap, it's not the end of the world.
-
I refuse to participate as this is obviously another subversive attempt by Jazz Kat to bring the board chaos!
-
Yeah he does that every time I play the album. You'd think he'd learn! Which reminds me of a joke: Two Aggies (you heard me) were watching a story on the 10 o'clock news where a guy was seen threatening to jump off a bridge. The first Aggie makes a bet with second, "I bet he jumps." "$10 says he doesn't" As the story continued the man, in fact did jump. As they settle the bet. The first Aggie confesses "Man, I can't take your money, I saw the same story on the 6 o' clock news." The other replied "No, you keep the $10. I saw the story on the 6 o'clock news too. I just didn't think he do it the second time."

Are any of the other models worth having at any price?
-
Most say for local delivery or pick up only anyway. I was just wondering.
-
Hate to interrupt, but your purchase got me looking a little. I don't play keyboard instruments at all and I don't plan on learning since I already play guitar, any free time will be devoted there. However, if I could find a deal like you found, I might consider getting it in an effort to persuade my nephews and perhaps my daughters into playing the organ. My nephew's take some piano lesson now and if I could derail him to the B3, I think I would have accomplished something in my life. What other models are worth getting? B3, C3, BV, J112, A100, M100, L102? I've seen several organs on Ebay for what seems to be a steal.

I recommend Jimmy McGriff's I GOT A WOMAN. This was in B3er top ten list a while back and after hearing some samples online I ordered it. If you don't have it and like the B3, you should really check this one out. This disc smokes!
