  1. and you wouldn't have to sit in the seat behind the column at the Newport Jazz Festival concert Monday night!
  2. That's a tough choice. I went with Relaxin' because that's what I listened to in the car this morning.
  3. Nice! Are those your own or are they from Harmonic Experience (it's been a long time and I never finshed reading it anyway). They're from Harmonic Experience. Those books changed my musical life, I tell ya! Joe, I ordered Harmonic Experience last night based on your messages (despite you calling me a dummy ). Now you're saying "Those books." What are the other books?
  4. Well, I guess we'll need to cut him some slack, after all, he's a bass player!! and someone in this discussion's first jazz guitar teacher!
  5. Which implies that I am always right . Back at Jazz camp last summer during combo class during one song at the same spot each time I played the wrong note because every time I did the pianist got yelled at. Hence, I am incapable of playing the wrong chord.
  6. Why would a guitarist, of all people, think that a chord needs to be stacked properly? You guys never play 1, 3, 5, .... its always 1, 7, 1, 3, 1, 5, 1.... If you look at just the notes you can come up with many names for the collection. The point I was trying to make was that you have to look at it in context.
  7. Jeez I hate it when someone slips in a better answer while I'm typing!
  8. I would call it a G minor add 9 if I where using it as the I in a minor blues.
  9. Lazaro, We looked for you when they thanked you for your support but I didn't spot you. Were you there?
  10. I am planning on being there. Normally Uncle Skid & I practice on Wednesday nights, but I don't want to miss what could be my last opportunity to see Phil.
  11. and bassist Dave Spring.
  12. He takes care of my glaucoma. I like him too. I enjoy the fact that he always remembers that you and I have something in common but he never remembers that he and I have discussed it before and that you and I have never met.
  13. I was there last night (as was Uncle Skid) to hear Mary Radimaker (she could go on the Babe thread as well). The PA they used was just a powered board and a pair of speakers on stands. I'm sure it was keyboardist's equipment since he was the one in control of it all night. Mary was great! That's not really my kind of jazz, but she does it well. She is very nice (and not just because she asked me to sit in next week, Uncle Skid). They are doing it in the large dining room in the back which is a great place to listen to good music. Another improvement over last year is that the kitchen is open!
  14. No, the guy in the office attached to Grand Haven Hospital.
  15. Does he have trouble hearing himself or does he get lost?
  16. So you have two available, Bill? Jim, that would be great if you want to go. I'd prefer not to make that drive alone. My wife and I grabbed an extra two with you in mind. So, yes I have two for you. I may have another but I don't know yet. If there are any tickets left they will be available next week. I can check and attempt to get more if they are needed and will be used.
  17. Lazaro - I was there and remember you. Do you remember me I was sitting first row exactly in the center . We also have the same opthalmaligist, he tells me that every time I see him (you are I are apparently the only two people he knows involved in Jazz). Anyone interested in getting together either just before or just after? Joe, we have a ticket for you. Are you bringing a friend? If not I may have another available for someone. I have Right K3-8.Our seats
  18. What is the date? Tomorrow (2/7/04)?
  19. I hear you guys are play at Dockers in Muskegon! I'll be there, but when will I be there ?
  20. As some of you know Uncle Skid and I play together, so Upright Bill vs Uncle Skid but Double Bass vs Jazz Guitar
  21. Checking In. Email sent. Thanks!
  22. Yours looks a lot like mine.
  23. I don't know what he means either. I only play Upright never Electric (Bass). Well almost never .
  24. Speaking as a bassist.... It depends on the problem. What I hate, and I think this is the most common problem with bad rhythm section players, is the guy that forgets his job. I see many bassists, realizing they are in trouble, try to remedy the situation by overplaying. Worse yet is the guy that needs to show off his chops. A good bassist is invisible (within the mix) until he stops playing. My job as a bassist is to make you sound good.
  25. SO sorry! That should have been "A BAD bass player is death. Simple as that." I can not apologize enough! I audibly gasped when I read your original post. A wanker is a wanker reguardless of the instrument. However, too many poor musicians become really bad bassists because they think bass must be easy, after all "it only has four strings and you only play one at a time." They never really learn the bass' function. It takes a different mindset to want to be a sideman.
