Get the DVD: HERE
-
I've just noticed this thread a couple of days late. By all means I second this recommendation. A wonderful CD! Here's a great recommendation if you love video with music DVDs as much as I do. BBC Opus Arte has put out a DVD titled "Jacqueline du Pre in Portrait", 155 minutes (!) in which aside from interviews of key figures in her life (including of course her husband Daniel Barenboim), plus old footage of she being interviewed both prior to and susequent to her fatal MS diagnosis, there are complete performances of the Elgar Cello Concerto (her signature piece) and the Beethoven Ghost Trio. She was wonderful! Also, if you're interested in a film about her life of which I cannot vouch for the liberties taken in the film, I recommend "Hilary and Jackie" in which Emily Watson portrays Ms. Du Pre.

Not enough to really matter. If you can get the CD and not the LP, go for it. I must differ with you on this. I have the Polydor LP and have liked it so much that when I saw the CD at a 2nd hand store for a very cheap price, I picked it up also. The sound on the CD is absolutely terrible and really does a disservice to the excellence of the session. So I put it in my own "cut out" bin. If anybody still wants it, PM me and I'll give it away for what I paid ($6, postage free within the U.S.)

Apologies to the past few BFT compilers from whom I got the discs but didn’t bother to give any input. So here goes: 1. Rudimentary Latin bag. Tenor reminds me of David Murray in spots, but if so, track is a spoof ‘cause this certainly isn’t his thing. 2. Bunch of tenors, probably youngsters who may have been on that Robert Altman homage to KC jazz, paying tribute to Hawk’s landmark ’39 take on “B&S”. Not for me. 3. Is this “Blue Lester”? Very listenable track. Scott Hamilton is a guess only because he’s the one retro pre-bop player I know who would perform this piece. If so, is it Howard Alden on guitar? 4. “Au Privave”. Couldn’t listen to more than half a minute to that awful trombone. Sorry. 5. Between the aimless alto and piano, I lost patience waiting for this piece to get somewhere around the three minute mark. 6. No guesses here, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this group went incognito when the 3rd Reich arrived on the scene. 7. Pleasant subdued big band blues but not striking enough for me to identify anyone. 8. Type of music I would enjoy if was in a park on a beautiful day and witnessed this performance live, ‘cause it’s obvious they’re having fun, but otherwise not too listenable on a CD. 9. Definitely a variation of “What is This Thing…..”. I dig this. The tenor is evocative of Joe Lovano. Is that a bass saxophone or a contrabass clarinet that follows the tenor? Whatever, he ruins the track. 10. I should know who this tenor is. Jacquet or Cobb perhaps? Anyway, it cooks. I’m sure Big Al digs this track. Ooh, fadeout….yuk! 11. Homage to Eric here. It’s certainly done in Dolphy’s solo bass clarinet style. Don’t know who this is however. 12. Nice enough, like the tenor. Guitar does nothing for me, actually sounds like he’s lucky to have been on the date, hope it’s not someone well known. Nice runs on the organ, but I’m lost when it comes to ID’g anybody on this instrument. 13. Can’t ID guitar players either although piece seems to be in a more classical Charlie Byrd vein. 14. Ornette-inspired duet. Clarinet is beautifully played, evocative of John Carter. Alto could be Ornette upon further listening but I know he didn't record with Carter........I think. 15. Pleasant enough in a minimalist way. NMCOT. 16. “Pent Up House”? Sounds like Phil Woods or someone who digs him a lot. I’ve always wanted to dig Woods ‘cause of his honesty, but whenever I go to put on a CD by him, I invariable choose a McLean side instead. 17. This why I prefer CDs to LPs. Funny!

I'm a '50s and '60s Rollins man so I'll stick to those two wonderful decades 1950s: Volume 1 and Volume 2 (Blue Note) 1960s: "Our Man in Jazz" (RCA) and "Alfie" (Impulse), the latter being an unbelievably underrated yet very much an essential recording.

Well here's hoping for a White Sox win. While one has to respect the reigning world champs, as a Yank fan, I think I'd rather face Chicago than Santana and Liriano in a 5 game playoff series. In any event, good to see Big Papi back, he's a real credit to the game.

Did you come here just to belittle people about baseball? As his "bitch" I'd like to say "it sure looks that way." Uh Dan, anytime someone disagree with you about anything regarding baseball, you immediately tear into a personal vendetta against them. You ripped MartyJazz a new one earlier in this thread because his predictions didn't jibe with your knowledge. You're constantly belittling JazzyPaul about his White Sox, for no other reason other than they had the nerve to win the World Series after they had offended the baseball gods way back when. You've belittled my Rangers and I've taken it all in stride because I know what a mediocre team they are. But God forbid anyone insult your beloved Red Sox, especially based on what you know. Heatwave hasn't been very nice to you, but I don't blame him. You weren't exactly welcoming to him when he first started posting here. Jeez, he says something negative about the Sox and you take it as a personal attack. Lighten up, fercryinoutloud! So what if it was baseless? SO FUCKING WHAT???? If the Red Sox are THAT important to you, you need to get a life. And I know I've raised your blood pressure by posting this which will no doubt cause you to refer to me as "dipshit," "asshole," etc etc etc. Be my guest. You've already called me (and the other baseball-loving posters on this thread) a "fucker," so, really, I don't care anymore. You're not the victim here, Dan, so quit acting like you can't understand why someone's pissing on your shoes after you've shit in his backyard. In all fairness, Dan has never "ripped me a new one" and has never gotten "personal" with me. Our discussions have always been cordial and I have always felt that he respects my knowledge of baseball (I am 20 years older) as well as I respect his.

Total guess here - Ted Williams?

"Dipshit", "fuckwad", "asswipe"........so there's someone else besides Nessa who pisses you off, Dan? Relaxxxxxxxxxx!

Excellent refutation of many of my key points with the exception that you did not note that Alex Gonzalez appears to be an improvement over Renteria, despite which for 2004 alone, Orlando Cabrera performed the best of the three shortstops when the money was on the line. Also, the fact that the Yanks were financially able to do what they wished with respect to the acquisition of Abreu, means that financial structure (not just the ability to adhere to a budget) IN ALL OF MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL, is simply lacking. I believe that roster salary caps as well as revenue sharing, as exists in the NFL, make for a stronger, more competitive environment. And of course I'm speaking as a happy Yankee fan who nevertheless can see the big picture.

I'm in a fabulous mood, thank you very much. I was rooting for the result which occured, my only disappointment came when the Yankees scored a run in the 8th and then WMP hit the homer. I was rooting for a 1-0 final, as that would achieve the ultimate cap of a 5 game sweep - shut out at home by a number 5 pitcher against a team that starts Nick Green at SS. So, unfortunately, the ultimate embarassment didn't happen, but this will do just fine. This isn't Boston Massacre II - this is a whole nother animal. In 1978, they were simply blown out in four straight (if I remember correctly, the last game was 8-3 and the closest one). This team, however, found a way to lose one extra game, and to lose in every way possible: Blown out Blown out after blowing a 10-7 lead A competitive game blown up by the bullpen into a rout Having the best closer in the team's history blow a game that might have allowed them to salvage the series (if the Yankees are truly blessed, Craig Hansen has been destroyed by this experience and will never pitch to the level he was supposed to. He'll be Brad Lidge without ever earning a single save) Finally getting lights out starting pitching and relief and still losing 2-1. I was on the phone with my brother shortly after the last game ended and he pointed out what should have been obvious to me, saying simply that he just didn't recognize the Red Sox anymore what with the loss via defections, trades, injuries, of Kevin Millar, Bill Mueller, Trot Nixon, Jason Varitek, and, most importantly, Johnny Damon. They all seemed to be terrific clutch hitters against the Yanks who now are concerned only with Ortiz and Ramirez when facing the Sox. While Ramirez hit well and did some damage, the Yanks obviously pitched around Ortiz whenever they could. Add the loss of a couple of clutch pitchers like Pedro Martinez and the erratic, but always up to face the Yankees, Derek Lee, and the Sox are a very different team that won it all in 2004. The Yankee core, offensive-wise, has remained intact from that year and obviously, they have come up with a couple of superb young players in Cano and Cabrera. Add to that the lack of financial restrictions in baseball that allow such additions as Damon - the description "looks like Jesus, acts like Judas" is particularly apt if one is a Sox fan - and lately, Abreu, and it's now quite apparent how the balance has been drastically altered between the two teams. Yanks' biggest problem (aside from less than imposing starting pitching) is what to do once Matsui and Sheffield are ready to play again. Edit: Obviously, as Berigan has pointed out, I meant Derek Lowe (not Lee).
-
Hey Dan, I regret how I characterized your decision but it was your certainty that the Yanks wouldn't go all the way this year that set me off. I admit however that if the shoe was on the other foot, no telling how fast I would want to opt out of further baseball communication. While I can't hope for the Red Sox to right their ship, winning is ultimately more rewarding when the competition is more tight.
-
Pretty cowardly, Dan. If the Yanks should go all the way, we won't hear from you, but if the probability of a non-Yankee World Series championship occurs (after all, the Tigers do have the best record, the White Sox who are the prevailing World Champions are very much alive, the Mets are a worthy adversary this year should the Yanks get to the big show, and Yankee starting pitching is not top drawer), then you will deign to appear with an "I told you so". I expect more from all true Red Sox fans. After all, the Red Sox are still the only team to come back from a 3-0 deficit in post game play. I suspect that you may be in danger of being expelled from Red Sox Nation. Say your capitulation isn't so and come back to us.
-
Well, they played the 2nd game and sure enough Yankee pitching led by the god-awful Sidney Ponson gave up 11 runs and 17 hits.
-
Well, the 1st game of the 5 game set between the Yanks and the Red Sox is in the bank, one that the Yanks had to win, since Ponson vs. Lester tonight looks like a sure loss for the New Yorkers. Not only has Ponson been awful the entire year, the announcers today indicated that the Yanks have yet to face Lester this year. Yanks always seem to roll over and play dead before a rookie pitcher they've never faced and considering Lester is a quality hurler (despite a 6+ ERA over his past few games), I guess I'll have to be happy with a split today. But........they still have to play the game, so we'll see.

One of my favorite private tapes is of a "Portraits in Jazz" broadcast of April 30, 1965 in which Sonny Rollins was featured with a quartet that included Herbie Hancock, Herman Wright and Beaver Harris. Anyone know if that one is being made available as I would love to get a better generation copy? I would appreciate a PM with the link to the site in any case.

Shit happens. The Yanks got swept in KC last year and still wound up taking the division. Be glad that the White Sox took 2 of 3 and that you didn't fall further behind. As a Yank fan however, last night was truly an ugly but well-deserved loss. A-Rod takes the goat award again.
-
I think the Yanks want to win, in particular, Bobby Abreu. He seems to be playing pretty well for his new team.

I too have the vinyl but can only dub to cassette at this point. What's the market price at this point for curiosity sake? -
I wouldn't mind having any domination of currency for each time I've listened to Hawk's "Man I Love" and this particular Pres version of "I Got Rhythm". Timeless stuff.

Very exciting final of a three game set between the Yanks and Rangers. (Tough to stomach for Dan and Big Al I would think ) Torre did all he could to give that game away bringing in T.J. Beam in the 8th. Hard to believe that the Yanks are now the leader in the AL wild card chase and obviously thinking of a much higher goal than that. Meanwhile, what's going on with the White Sox?
