Just got to my PC now and see that after a bit of a lull, I'm rewarded with some great feedback beginning with Jim S.
-
couw, your stream of consciousness definitely works for me. Very entertaining read. As far as mood goes, it can vary I agree. Hell, I can even re-listen to this disc and question myself at times, "what made me include that?" Good stuff.

Anyone see the film 'The Aristocrats'?
MartyJazz replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Can't wait to see this. My brother and I - absent the wives (and children, of course) - will check it out this coming week at one of only three theaters featuring this film in southeast FL. Will try to post a review. -
I'll second that. Definitely a very good purchase of a Steeplechase LP that I made when it was initially released. Bronislaw Kaper's "Invitation" is one of my favorite compositions and I love Hill's dense treatment of it.

Ok, been out all day. In order: Indigo, Love your jumbled bunch of names at the end of your post. Some right on, some not. Big Al: Yeah, I love that piece too and that fantastic build up at the end, which is why I programmed it I guess. D'oh! If anyone will get it, I'm afraid it'll be brownie. And yeah, I guess I was kind enuf not to point out the absence of Sonny on #15. RDK: You prewarned me that you'd be pressed timewise, so I'm glad you're getting a chance to listen. Great to have an office where you can do so. The car is the best though 'cause you're in a sealed compartment with the sounds enveloping you; the only thing that can interrupt, should you let it, is the cell phone. Look forward to your comments if you can. Thanks to one and all for the on the disc.

Ditto. Great, great mementos. Thanks not only for cherishing them but for sharing them with us.

Sorry for the cheat. I didn't know. I am still learing the rules here... Besides, as my brain has conceded a large part of its functions to Google lately, I think like a first grader without it. But no more Googling, I promise! ← I didn't say you were cheating at all. Many here have used Google and in all fairness, you do have to start with some original thought to use it successfully. But it does make perfect identification a lot easier. A few of the more courageous BFT contributors here choose not to use it preferring to trust their listening powers only. Either way, all your input has been entirely welcome. By the way, on #6 while I gave you "full credit", it should be noted that there are 4 sessions on that CD in which one of four other saxophonists is featured besides the leader. Can you ID who the other saxophonist is on this track?

Thanks for the good word and would really like to hear more detail from you if time allows. Join the gang on #15, that one seems to have been a freebie for most who hear it as well as it should be. A classic! Later,
-
naos, Googling shouldn't be allowed here. That said, you obviously have a very good ear for drummers as well as bassists for that matter, leading me to believe that you are a musician. While 2, 3, 5 & 12 have been id'd already, your thinking was definitely on the money re these tracks. And you did score completely on 6, 7 & 9 by putting yourself in a strong position to google successfully. Strong, partially correct guesses elsewhere. Re track 12 wherein you state that Murray also appears elsewhere on the disc, not so. Anyway, good work and unusual in this forum for the fact that this disc posed less of a challenge to you than Disc One. Would love to see your responses for that disc as well.

He doesn't seem to be doing any such thing. He blames Torre for a bad decision to leave the left handed Embree in the other night to face Konerko who then hits a game winning HR, ignoring the fact that Konerko was doing very poorly against LH pitching up until that point. With what's happened to Yankee starting pitching this year, I'm surprised that they even have a winning record, vaunted lineup notwithstanding. Pitching is more than 50% of the game, always has been. I don't understand how George with all his years in this game can blame Torre for the Yanks' record and likelihood that they won't make the playoffs.

On track #9, don't track down the album on the link you posted 'cause that ain't it. And why did you pick out #8 from that album anyway? On #12, you're totally on the money. On #13, I've now seen the adjectives "haunting" and "melancholy" applied to it. Very appropriate considering the circumstances that surround this track. Explanation to come eventually either from me or perhaps from someone who ID's it. Glad that overall you professed a preference of Disc 2 to the first one. It provides a nice balance of opinion here.

I really dig all the answers I'm getting and the absolute certainty with which some state their guesses however wrong. "A" for courage all around. Better to play and be wrong than to sit back and say, "I'm glad I didn't say that". In any event, Big Al, congrats on #15, and as for the last three you want to know, you'll find the answers to two of them above. #17 however remains a mystery thus far.
-
Great. I was wondering what happened to you and king ubu. Should have realized that it's August in Europe. Hope you both had a good one. Looking forward to ALL your comments.
-
Really glad you dug #7. Beautiful trumpet and IMO, a terrific tenor solo. Mustn't say more otherwise I'll be giving it away. In any event, I like also that you'll be returning to this BFT - that was a goal in creating it, that it could "survive" for some after the answers are posted.

Kenny Dorham Quintet featuring Rocky Boyd on tenor: EASE IT! (Muse), a reissue of an album that originallyappeared in '61.

By the same token, an occasional familiar tune can make a program flow a little better. At least that's the credo I've always lived by as a jazz radio host. I thought you said that your goal wasn't to stump us, but to provide good listening. ← I trust you're not saying that in order to provide good listening, familiar tunes necessarily have to be programmed, because I certainly don't believe that. I was also very much aware that since a BFT takes up the better part of a month, there has to be some "confounding" otherwise the responses will dry up pretty quick once all the tracks are ID'd. However, "confounding" in my mind is less associated with choice of tunes and more associated with programming esoteric, little known artists, something which I definitely succeeded in not doing on Disc One and more or less tried not to do on this disc. So, to all those who have yet to respond, you can all take that as somewhat of a hint I guess, albeit not much help.
-
I know you do own a few of what I programmed and what's more I'm certain you have at least one of the CDs that I used on Disc Two. Hope that doesn't get you a little more crazed.
-
Glad you find it a joy to listen to. Some of the answers will surprise you when you either wait for me to post them or look at some earlier posts, but I could understand what was behind your guesses in quite a few instances. You made a good start on track #7 but then digressed elsewhere. Thanks very much for your input. I was looking forward to your comments and hope to see some more re the rest of the disc.
-
You are very much welcome, Paul. I did enjoy compiling this disc and did very much want to program some diversity to maintain interest. As for the high number of cuts, I prefer that BFTs in general should keep 'em coming. There is no track over 8 minutes on either of the two discs and most are safely below that limit. In any event, I really enjoyed your comments concerning the 6 tracks you knew. Not once did you name any names nor post any links but you left no doubt, in my mind at least, that you nailed those tracks. And thanks especially for cluing me on track #11, to an alternative version of that blues by a tenor player that I had forgotten about and to the trumpeter led date that I indeed have on LP.
-
Except for #3 and #5 on this disc, I completely avoided all pop and jazz standards on both discs for exactly this reason. I'm convinced that familiarity with a tune is a great help in ID'g any particular track. Anyway, you're on the money again, tooter.
-
Hey Jack: Great input as usual. I'm practically starving here. Yeah everyone, it's a bandoneon on track 1, not an accordion - not that I can tell the difference. Context however is everything. Share your antipathy somewhat re the "jazz messengers" approach of the trumpet, but do like the tenor, "aggressiveness" and all. You are first to ID track 5 tune! First heard it by of all players, the ancient George Shearing back on an old Capitol LP in front of a live audience. Have loved it since. I will grant since you're not the first to surmise it, that yes that's the Toots harmonica on track 9. I don't know anyone else who could cook like that on that instrument but I'd love to hear Mike Turk sometime. Track 13 is indeed "haunting" and it's always captivated me whenever I've put it on. Poignant story surrounding this track. Thanks again, Jack. Kind of glad that you didn't "ace" this one like Disc One.

2005 NFL Training Camp And Pre-Season Games
MartyJazz replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Jet fan here and happy about the Ty Law signing, obviously if he's truly recovered. Foot injuries at that position especially mean that the risk is even greater that he'll reinjure. In any event, wonder what this bodes for John Abraham who's sitting out training camp thus far hoping the Jets come up with some huge bucks for a new contract. Man's great but injury prone and has a way of missing big games, i.e., no show come playoff time. Regarding earlier posts here re Lamont Jordan, how I hated to lose him!!!! Curtis is due for a slide and LJ, I'm afraid, is really going to blossom for the black and silver (ugh!). -
Never mind, you did great. Quite a few signing up for #29 have yet to be heard from on #28. In the meantime, PM sent on the sign-up.

Not Ms. Hughes if you do a Google on Lisa Guerrero and look at the images that pop up.

That photo is of Ms. Guerrero I believe. I was curious about Ms. Hughes. Never mind, just did a Google. Here she is:
