Milwaukee's very own free jazz fest: OKKA Fest 7 - June 5th, 6th and 7th, 2015 OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE and Full Program OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE - OKKA FEST 7 OKKA FEST, an annual and international festival of improvised music, returns to Milwaukee June 5 through June 7, 2015 for its 7th edition, featuring another brilliant line up of musicians who will perform 17 sets of music over the course of the event. Legendary multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee (Poughkeepsie, NY) and the trumpet innovator Peter Evans (New York, NY) kick off the festival with a duo set at 7:00 Friday night at the Sugar Maple in Bay View. They will be followed by three more groups, also comprised of some of the most outstanding contemporary musicians working today. In addition to McPhee and Evans- and many of Chicago’s finest improvisational artists- this year's festival will include visiting musicians Johannes Bauer (trombone/Germany), Helen Gillet (cello/New Orleans, LA), Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (bass/Norway), Paul Lytton (drums/England), Mat Maneri (violin/New York, NY), and Jeb Bishop (trombone/Durham, NC). The concerts begin Saturday with an intimate afternoon set by Paul Lytton and Mat Maneri (solos & duo) at the Palm Tavern at 2:30pm. This first time meeting will be followed by a free community Music Walk of solo performances that start at Anodyne café with Jason Adasiewicz (vibraphone) at 4:00. Listeners will then proceed down Kinnickinnic Avenue to the Rush-Mor record store for a set by Helen Gillet on cello and on to ACME Records for music by the bassist, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten. The music begins again at the Sugar Maple at 7pm with Håker Flaten in a duo with Joe McPhee, who will be followed by trio, quartet, and quintet lineups to round out the evening. Sunday starts at 3pm with a solo performance by Johannes Bauer on trombone at ACME. Then the music continues with a series of 4 sets at the Sugar Maple which follow the inspired programming approach of this year's Okka Fest: a duo featuring Joe McPhee (electronics with Jim Baker), unique formats (string trio with percussion- Gillet, Håker Flaten, Maneri with Lytton), new compositions (Tim Daisy's Vox Arcana), and sensational finales to close out each evening (the exceptional lineup of Johannes Bauer, Paul Lytton, Tim Daisy, Helen Gillet, and Fred Lonberg-Holm playing together for the first time as a quintet). DJ sets by Bruno Johnson (Friday), Tim Daisy (Saturday) and Ken Vandermark (Sunday) will follow the live performances each night. Advance passes for the festival will go on sale on XXXXXXXX, and can be ordered directly at http://okkadisk.com. A limited number of 25 Gold Passes will be sold, these include reserved seating for all the sets at the Sugar Maple and Palm Tavern, and an Okka Fest 7 poster and T-Shirt, for $150. The Weekend Pass will include early admission to all shows for $120. The Sugar Maple sessions will be $40 at the door, and $20 to attend the second half of the evening. The Saturday Palm session will be $20 with limited space available. Students with a valid ID will get a 25% discount at the door. The Music Walk is free to all. Okka Disk is an independent American jazz record label founded by Bruno Johnson who, along with Adrienne Pierluissi, also owns and operates the Sugar Maple and Palm Tavern in Bay View. The Okka Disk label has been documenting improvised and free jazz music since 1994 and has amassed a huge catalog featuring artists from around the world. Since 2009, Johnson and Pierluissi have been working in collaboration with renowned jazz composer and improviser, Ken Vandermark, to develop Okka Fest as a way to celebrate the range of contemporary improvised music for listeners and musicians from around the world. Without question, all three plus their team of volunteers have worked to ensure that Okka Fest 7 will be the most exciting edition of the festival yet. Lew plays in both big and small bands. The High school's jazz band is a big band. He also plays in a trio of alto, piano & drums. Here are some links: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5e1G94Bnqg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-xRaWN5qs8

My son Lewis, an alto sax playing 17 year old senior received the Louis Armstrong Jazz Musician award from Whitefish Bay High School tonight. I don't play, but I like to think that all the music he's heard at home growing up inspired his love for playing music.

I've owned the Paradigm Studio 20 v4 for many years now and just love them. Current version is v5 with curved cabinet. Previously had the B&W CDM but they didn't do it for me. Some say the Paradigms are a bit bright, but I found the CDMs a bit dull & lacking in bass. The Studio 20 has beautiful detail & clarity. Also consider the Goldenear Aon 3. $1,000 list. It's got a folded ribbon tweeter that's to die for. So clear & smooth.

Same condition, caveats, price as clifford_thornton offered. See link Except the cardboard divider in this set was torn in shipping. $450 shipped to lower 48. You can email me at peter@zwiefelhofer.com.

Looking for website where I can legally (pay for) downloads of recordings on these labels. I see mp3 downloads, but I only do lossless. Thanks.

I've been member of this forum pretty much since the beginning. Over the past 10 years or so I’ve found this forum to be both informative and entertaining. However, for a long time now I have found what I believe to be the over zealousness of posters I call the “copyright police” to be frequently irritating. I've had more than one post edited by them. And I recall a thread about Fresh Sounds in which the original poster requested that posters refrain from discussing copyright issues in his thread since they’d been raised in connect that that label in many other threads. But the “copyright police” could not resist and co-opted the thread. Copyright is a valid concern, but I think the “copyright police” are a bit over the top. I wonder if others feel the same way? And, have the “copyright police” contributed to the gradual decline in posting to the site?

Anyone know where he's writing these days? Would like to see his best of 2012 list. Thanks.

I've committed to purchase. It is pricey, but if you're patient enough it'll probably appreciate.

Thanks. Ordered from Dusty Groove.

I've manged to badly crack my copy of Henry Threadgill's "When Was That?" Compounding the problem, this is out of print and I can find no used copies. The 1st 2 tracks (Melin & 10 to 1) are playable, but the last 3 (Just B, When Was That? & Soft Suicide at the Baths) are not. Anybody willing to help me find one? Thank you!

Nimbie USB looks very interesting. I wonder about meta data though. Lots of times its crap. No artwork, wrong dates, occasionally wrong cd, or even wrong artist. dbpoweramp gives you alternatives so you can select the proper data. Also I often manually edit the meta data. Default is often release date rather than recording date. And I like to label alternate and bonus tracks (when I remember). Another issue in jazz recordings is that meta data will sometimes use different names for the same artist. For example Steve Lacy, Steve Lacy Trio, Stevie Lacy Five, Steve Lacy Octet, etc, etc. I edit to make them all Steve Lacy. If the Nimbie USB automatically selects the meta data occasionally you're going to get totally wrong stuff. Even doing it manually, I occasionally blow it. I've got 1 disc of abstract saxophones labeled as Shakra, which allmusic says is a Swiss hard rock band. I can't tell by ear what the recording is and trying to figure out the true artist will be a pain. I think by looking at date & time of rip and comparing to other discs ripped at that time I should be able to figure it out. In short, I suspect that while you can probably rip a lot of discs quickly, you may spend a lot of time editing meta data. Even so, if I wasn't 80% done ripping my collection I'd probably seriously look at Nimbie USB or some other automated solution. Hell, had I realized the enormity of this task going in, I might never have started! Even when I'm done ripping, I know there's meta data errors I'll need to correct. And I've got a hankering to deconstruct my Mosaic and other boxes into their component discs as originally released. Then I could listen to them as individual albums or as Mosaic boxes! That would be cool. Anyway, should get back to ripping. The meta data on Steve Lacy's Chirps is all messed up & needs editing.

The twofer LP sets were popular in the 1970s. Blue Note & Fantasy both released a bunch.

Re the gnashing of teeth over the cost of a Joe Daley 3 disc box, my view is that any self-respecting jazz obsessive has no choice. If JLH puts it out, you buy it. End of story.

Been diligently ripping discs for a couple months now. Ripping to Apple lossless via dbpoweramp. Completed all non-jazz discs & am up to Marilyn Crispell in my jazz collection. 39,195 tracks & 852gb. Wife is right about cd collection being out of control.
