  1. and here in action. Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future, was the British comic hero of the fifties and sixties - no webslinger or bat-fetishist could threaten his place in the hearts of a generation of small boys. A quintessentially British figure, stiff-upper lipped Dan, weekly fought off the bubble-headed menace of the Mekon, keeping the spaceways safe for all. Dan made his debut as the lead character in The Eagle adventure comic on April 14th 1950. He was created by Frank Hampson, who wrote most of the stories, and oversaw the art for the first ten years. The bright, exciting strips, with their thrilling tales of adventure on exotic planets - in full colour! - were an instant hit. Many of Dan's exploits took place on Venus, a divided planet, inhabited by the emotionless Treens and and their meglomaniac leader The Mekon in the north, and the peaceable Therons in the south. A wizened, tiny figure who traveled on a personal flying saucer, The Mekon was physically feeble, but made up for this with his huge intelligence - shown by his enormously enlarged head.
  2. and this is Dan Dare himself.
  3. I suppose some of these American efforts were okay but the best comic in the world was and will always be the Eagle, from Britain. Weeks used to revolve around Fridays when I was delivering newspapers as a thirteen year old and the Eagle came out. Dan Dare on the front page was the primary attraction. Anyone else remember this?
  4. Standard Happy Birthday.

Two posts! Good! I was thinking about taking out a lease here Now that I read the plot synopsis, it seems dreadfully familiar. Surely I couldn't have seen it myself and not even noticed the soundtrack? I probably read about the story and decided not to view. Late sixties - no videos even, at that time. But that puts me in a much better position if it comes up on eBay again to decide whether the price is worth it or not. Domo arigato for the input, Naos.

That's quite a cast list though. David Niven, Deborah Kerr, Robert Coote even. I remember him, just about. And quite a risque picture for the sixties. Thanks for the gen, Bob (not a sixties word - even earlier!).

So here's another question that is unlikely to elicit any answers I know. It will keep this thread nearer to top of the pile though. "Prudence and the Pill" - This album turned up on eBay a little while ago but I missed winning the auction in the last few seconds. The description said that there are jazz solos by someone on a Hammond B3, Ronnie Ross, Danny Moss and Ernie Shear on guitar but as movie music it looked a bit doubtful to me for inclusion in a jazz discography.www.ronnieross.com Once again, if anyone knows about the content of the album and can give any idea as to its suitability, it would be very nice to hear from them. Does anyone remember the movie even?
  8. Included me too please. PM sent.
  9. 1. Exciting occasion no doubt. Have to be there and under the influence of something to enjoy it. 2. Is it a fire at the beginning? I was prepared to dislike this but as it went I found it growing on me just a little. Not something I would choose to listen to though. 3. Try a Little Tenderness. Schmaltzy. Don’t recognize the alto or piano. 4. What a Little Moonlight Can Do. Voice is a little familiar but don’t know her. Like the piano. 5. Without a Song. Sounds like Woody Shaw, although there’s a trademark Hubbard horse neigh effect. Favourite track on the disc for me. 6. Piano duet? No idea. 7. Don’t recognize the sop sax. Quite nice. 8. Steel drums. No idea about this either. 9. I avoid this kind of thing normally. Monotonous. 10. Can’t appreciate this at all. 11. Ditto. Lots that I like here even though I am stony ground for much of it too. Thanks a lot for a different and noteworthy BFT, Jim.
  10. Happy Birthday, Agustin.
  11. 1. How High the Moon. Although it is so familiar, it’s a tune I always revel in and this version is highly enjoyable. Meaty sax, swings all the way. Unfortunately, I’m getting no inspiration as to who any of the players are. 2. Can’t quite get the title of this tune. It’s there on the tip of my tongue. One of the no brainers as to who is the main protagonist? I do like the second “singer” though – what aplomb! 3. Sounds too low to be a baritone sax so maybe bass sax. Cheerful, infectious. Can’t guess anything. 4. This tune reminds me of While My Lady Sleeps by Kaper. If it’s not that I don’t know what it is. Rollins and Coltrane, tenor and soprano? Can’t guess the trombonist. 5. Gone with the Wind. At first I thought Brubeck but then the alto doesn’t sound like Desmond at all to me. Almost as if it’s some people pretending to be the DB quartet. 6. Swing era? The Man I Love? Stated in guitar solo more clearly than anywhere else if it is, or perhaps it’s just a quote. Guitar sounds more modern than anyone else. Could it be Christian? 7. Don’t know who this is either. Does not seem familiar at all. Not keen on this one. 8. I Got it Bad. I don’t listen to singers much and don’t recognize her. 9. Seem to know the tune but can’t name it. Is it Basie? The piano at the end is all. 10. Again the tune seems familiar but no name comes out. Like this track – powerful band. 11. High Fly by Randy Weston. The vibes style sounds familiar but I can’t produce a name. 12. Windows by Chick Corea? So familiar I thought it was Getz at first but later not like him at all. No guesses. 13. Moon Maiden. Is it a dulcimer? 14. Mountain Oysters. No comment. 15. Time After Time. Stanley Turrentine? Nice version. Great tune. 16. Nice voice. 17. For All We Know. Don’t know who. A bit overdone I thought. Just my usual meager contribution, blundering about as always. Thanks for some good listening, sir. Very enjoyable. Now I can look at other comments.
  12. Third and last post about arrival of UK batch. Came just now, discs sent to fent99 straight away. Only a little behind everybody else. Thanks Jim - I will be listening this evening I hope.
  13. So many threads to do with BFT27 preliminaries. Not sure which to post on so posting on all of them. Discs arrived today - thanks Jim - and one set forwarded to fent99. Ready to join discussions soon here.
  14. UK consignment has arrived. Discs forwarded to fent99. I got today's post collection so with luck should be there tomorrow.
  15. Happy birthday. Best wishes.
  16. Shouldn't be that much disruption I think. They will probably be here on Monday. I will post as soon as they arrive. Only two of us participating chickens "roosting" in the UK anyway. Discussion well under way I see, from the number of posts.
  17. Well, I suppose you might be nearer to Texas than we are in the UK, Naos. Glad your in and started. Sounds as though you might outdo a lot of people - not that it's a competition of course. I've got a feeling a deja-vu and from not too long ago. I thought we had a "special relationship" but maybe it hasn't percolated to the postal services.
  18. But have you seen the current bid? £101 - 17 bids and still more than three days to go. That's out of my league, grant or no grant. Know how you feel with the mountain, SW. I occasionally let myself slide into this position. You must always keep up with things - self-discipline is the watchword.
  19. Hey, that's more money for the 'Ronnie Ross Rare Vinyl "Keep It In the UK"' fund ! ← Good point! Perhaps I will get on to the British museum for a grant. Not in this time, SW?
  20. Mailman just came with an income tax refund but that was all. I really wanted BFT27 Have to wait until at least Monday now.
  21. Now that I'm retired I don't use the tube as much as all that but it looks as though the underground bombs were mostly on the Northern Line which is our local so that's a bit scary. However, we were both at home all morning so didn't even know anything until a little while ago. Thanks for all the good wishes and support from elsewhere for us Londoners - very good to hear and most welcome. Doesn't it make you want to do something?
  22. Thanks again, John, for a BFT that took me to places I have never been to before -the main object. It's good to see all the album covers too - they do add something. The personnel on 2. is the same as on the album "Non Dimenticar" I see so maybe they used the same take for the title track. Anyway, the mystery about the tune is cleared up - two titles, as suspected. I suppose the name changed when the lyric was added? Nice to get something almost right although I was blundering about in the dark for everything else.
  23. Please welcome new member naos who has joined today. He is a Kenny Wheeler fan and has signed up for the current BFT.
  24. I have none but AMG shows just one that I can see, on this album. Good review. Duo - alto/piano.
