  1. Thank you for all this. I'd like to do a documentary on Big Jay. I owe him a call.
  2. Yes, probably. I will see how these do. If not so well, I might wait til September or later for the others. Adam

  5. Hi, CDs are treated well, in original packaging (unless I swapped out the jewel case for one in better condition somewhere along the line). Light scuffing on jewel case is possible from being crammed on shelves, but CDs are always treated well. Prices include U.S. domestic media mail shipping. Higher priority shipping or international available on request at cost. Can send photos of any if you have questions about the edition or condition. Open to discounts if you buy several. 6. Yeah. I'll try auctioning. I just posted the J.J. Johnson & Illinois Jacquet on eBay. Will do a new thread for some single CDs at lower rates.
  7. I do love these sorts of scenarios, and they form the basis for quite a few of the fantasy/sf books I read. Most pertinently, many years ago I read a sf short story in which the lead character had an obsession/love affair with the past. When, through some mumbo jumbo technology/magick the nature of which I completely forget, he finally was granted his wish to actually travel into the past, he had no control over the process. So he ended up in some pre-historic era in which the human-like residents were knuckle-draggers without even fire. A long way from that dude's favourite historic eras. And when he finally got to travel back to what he thought would be his own time zone, he ended up in a joint so far into the future that there was nothing but endless corridors of cold, white, humming computers. Isn't this H.G. Wells's The Time Machine? I remember one by Bradbury where a hunter and a guide go back to hunt a dinosaur. The hunter steps off the proscribed path ever so slightly, they return to the present, and everything is changed, because he stepped on a butterfly when he stepped off the path. An SF classic, the title of which escapes me at the moment. Could "thunder" be part of the title?
  8. Hi, No, wasn't me, must have been someone else offering it. I haven't changed any of the prices yet. If I do, it will be to lower them.
  9. It is? Thanks, I thought it was out of print. Should have checked. OK, let me delete it. If any of these other prices are out of line, let me know. I'm flexible.
  10. Hi, I'm about to auction some sets, but thought I should give you all a chance first. All are in very good to great shape, probably kept they way you keep them, played not very often, box, booklet, CDs & liner notes complete. Need the money. 11. Do those guys all teach there?!? yep. There's a venue in Long Beach that is good. And I also just saw a show at a place called Bordello in downtown LA that seems liek it could be good for you. It's pretty close to Cafe Metropole. http://cafemetropol.com/ http://www.bordellobar.com/flash/index.html I'll send you Rocco's email separately. But you can also probably reach him through http://www.angelcityjazz.com/
  12. Check with Rocco - maybe Cafe Metropole? He might be too busy putting together the Angel City Jazz Festival over Labor Day weekend, but I assume you would be coming after that, during the school year? Maybe the Smell in downtown? The place I saw you last time, Safari Sam's, is out of business. And Jazz Bakery is currently out of business as well. Hope you get a chance to play with Vinny Golia, Wadada Leo Smith, and Charlie Haden while you are at Cal Arts!
  13. Also written up in the LA Times by filmmaker Ron Shelton: http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-dalkow...0,5571688.story The person holding the photo of Dalkowski is Terry Cannon, who founded Filmforum, the organization that I now run. He runs the Baseball Reliquary. www.baseballreliquary.org
  14. Already received a reply: "July 10th is the day the CD can be shipped ou the CD-factory. Alan Lawrence of Jazz Loft has ordered the CD together with the reissue of Roach/Shepp and should be able to offer it from his mail order service end of this month." he also sent this: "Horace Tapscott's The Dark Tree (2-630) will be ready on July 10th, 2009. Max Roach & Archie Shepp's The Long March (2-640) earlier ready on July 16th, 2009. Anthony Braxton's Creative Orchestra (Koeln) 1978 (2-644) will be ready on September 4th, 2009."
  15. I think it's a global release date, but it takes a few days longer for it to get to the US. I'll check with Werner though.
  16. There was a great-looking party, I'm pretty sure at Klein's, circa 71ish, filmed by both Jonas Mekas (on film) and Shirley Clarke (on a very early B&W video portapak). You can see each other filming in the other's footage. Among the attendees were John Lennon & Yoko Ono, Andy Warhol, Miles Davis. Miles & Lennon shoot hoops - Lennon is terrible and Davis sweeps the floor with him.
  17. I live about ten minutes from Staples Center, and was debating whether to take teh subway there tomorrow morning just to see what it might be like. But now they are telling everyone to stay away, and I've come to my senses. Every time in the past where everyone has panicked over crowds in LA (such as teh '84 Olympics), it's never turned out to be a problem, since enough people get scared away.
  18. My plan was up on July 13, and they were going to automatically roll it over into a plan that had only 35 credits a month, instead of 75, for about the same money, I put it on hold for 90 days. Need the money, and will see if anything changes. I'll cancel it in 90 days if nothing changes.
  19. I like the Solal-Konitz very much. Just received this: Horace Tapscott's The Dark Tree will be ready on July 10th, 2009. hatOLOGY 2-630 Horace Tapscott : The Dark Tree Horace Tapscott –piano John Carter – clarinet Cecil McBee – double bass Andrew Cyrille – drums CD 1 Total Time DDD 59:39 CD 2 Total Time DDD 67:44 Barcode 752156063025 Reviews for the last edition: **** + "crown" Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings, 9th edition ***** All Music Guide to Jazz, 4th edition Recorded live in Hollywood on December 14-17, 1989. This was an important, revealing release when it was first issued in 1991. Now, with both Horace Tapscott and John Carter having passed on, it takes on even more significance with our knowing that they are beyond the vagaries of man and Fate, and cannot contribute any more to our lives. On The Dark Tree they created music of power and drama, beauty and spirit. It's a shame we had to wait so long to hear it, and now we should treasure it. – Art Lange Enregistrement life à Hollywood du 14-17 décembre 1989. – Art Lange
  20. I also generally liked it. i could see limitations if one is familiar with much of this material already, and I think there was an over-reliance on album covers. I did appreciate the grouping of covers by artist though - to have six Warhol covers all together was very nice. I appreciated more though the early art, covers from albums of 78s, and posters that I had never seen. The ceaseless racism of the art continues to astound. It was also marvelous to see the original painting featured on Steve Lacy's "the Forest and the Zoo" and to learn that the album cover flipped the painting.
  21. Thought there might be, and brownie's initiation would make the most sense, but haven't found it yet. When I do, I'll delete this one.
  22. Closes soon. I'm here on vacation, and intend to see it tomorrow. Anyone else go? http://www.quaibranly.fr/en/programmation/...tury/index.html garden Gallery from 17 March to 28 June 2009 curator: Daniel Soutif Jazz, along with the cinema and rock music, stands as one of the major artistic events of the 20th century. The sounds and rhythms of this hybrid musical style have made their mark on world culture. The exhibition, created by the philosopher and art critic Daniel Soutif, presents the relationship between jazz and the graphic arts chronologically throughout the entire 20th century. From painting to photography, cinema to literature, not forgetting graphic design or comics, the exhibition pays particular attention to the development of jazz in Europe and France during the 1930s and 40s.
  23. I can go check it out. Got an address?

  25. Thanks, NOJ, but that's not what I'm asking: How can I globally DELETE , DUMP, FLUSH, EVERYTHING that's on my iPod - NO BACKUP, as in GONESVILLE, baby - and then RE-SYNCH to what I CURRENTLY have on iTunes? All you have to do is plug it in and re-sync it. That should delete the old stuff as well.
