  1. Hi, Nope, I don't know, sorry. Which LA show, by the way? All 3 were LA.
  2. I like them a lot, and have seen them live 3 times. The first time, with them as headliners at the Knitting Factory, was amazing. The second time, at the Wiltern, they played with the one-man nband named Iron & Wine. The Calexico set was abbreviated. The third time at a "showcase" at the Barnsdall Park Theatre in Los Angeles just a couple of weeks ago. Had to wait in line 3 hours to get in to the sold out show, which stared at 9:30 and was done by 10:30 - another abbbreviated set, as showcases I believe often are. I need to see a full set from them again.
  3. Hmmm. It's usually in the top five of any list of "greatest films ever made." At what point does it no longer become a cult film? And it is really great.
  4. It's playing (at least, a doc on Cecil is playing) this week at the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles this week. I'm going to try to see it. There's also a film on Charles Lloyd & Billy Higgins - I think this is teh film alluded to to during their making of their final album(s). http://www.paff.org/html/index.php
  5. Sunny and dry in Los Angeles. Again. I wish it would rain a little.
  6. It was my birthday, so probably just everyone sending their best wishes.
  7. Heck, even Richard Thompson could cover the years 1000 AD to 2000 AD in one CD!
  8. That's pretty amazing. How could they have let that go to press without the retouched cover? How how how? That's going to be like the upside-down biplane postage stamp. :-)
  9. The Academy Awards, certainly, were created really to help promote movies. Rewarding perceived accomplishment is a useful way to do it. Most presenters are people with upcoming films, etc. I'm sure the Grammys are the same. So if you win one and don't promote, then really you are failing the Academy. ;-) Of course, Harry Smith won one for lifetime achievement for the Anthology of American Folk Music and died soon thereafter, so occasinally some good things happen. So you're saying it's a good thing Harry Smith is dead? Yikes, I am. Bad writing. I shall fix.

  11. Thanks for that - superb. Did he slap the hand of the one grey haired gent in the front row who at least was gamely clapping along? Gave him five?
  12. You called it. Hey sundog, which horse is winning in the seventh race tomorrow?
  13. The set list (too many people in the band to list). -- Concert in the Garden -- Chord Dancado (from Concert in the Garden) -- Journey Home (from Allegresse) -- El Viento second set: -- Andes de Lando (sp?) - a new commission from the LA PHilharmonic and a bunch of other people. Composition based on visit to Peru, and the Peruvian polyrhythm known as "La Do" (sp?) -- unnamed, but a portrait of Windham, MN, also commission by a bunch of organizations. She is looking forward to playing this is Windham in a couple of weeks. The way she described it made it sound very programatic, but it wasn't so much. -- Sky Blue -- Hang Gliding (from Allegresse) encore: -- Sea of Tranquility (from Allegresse) Oh, someone played accordion but was not listed in the program. First name Gary. He had to leave early to catch a red eye. I couldn't hear his last name due to the applause. Gary Versace?
  14. I agree. (I went as well). Pretty, but nothing essential. I wasn't bored (well, not often), but I wasn't sent anywhere either. Everyone gets well-behaved once they are placed in the confines of Disney Hall.
  15. I concur with Shane. I never watch them; they've always been a joke, and everyone knows that worthy people hardly ever (almost wrote "never") get nominated, let alone win. The practice of mixing old acts with new acts is what they've been doing for a couple of years, and as far as I've heard (since I don't watch) they always make a comedy of errors.
  16. An don't forget that the Grammys are tonight at the Staples Center. So everything south of 8th street or so will be tied up. Good thing Disney Hall is on 1st.
  17. Hi Allen, Will the next volumes just continue chronologically? What sort of material might we see? Do you think they will get done?
  18. I have a ticket, but need to see how under the weather I am...
  19. Let's see if I can load a photo: Cline, Amendola, Hoff, Perkins
  20. up What if you have Mac and no Photoshop?
  21. wow. so is it all good? :-)
  22. New announcement: Dear Friend, 2 more to come end of February 2006: hatOLOGY 603 : WARNE MARSH, NE PLUS ULTRA (reissue, remastered) It's hard to understand why Warne Marsh was so neglected during his lifetime. It's harder still to substantiate the charges with which his music was branded –cerebral, cold, unemotional, uninvolving. This album alone, one of his best, should been enough to put such absurd slurs to rest. The music on Ne Plus Ultra is intimate, warm, passionate, risky. There is much beauty to be shared. –Art Lange hatOLOGY 624 : JOE McPHEE & SURVIVAL UNIT II WITH CLIFFORD THORNTON (reissue, remastered) Producers note: I first heard these tapes during my visit to the U.S.A. in 1974. The occasion was my first meeting with Joe McPhee and Craig Johnson of CJR Records. That meeting and the impact the music of these and other unreleased tapes had on me, are the reason I became a record producer. Originally this release was planed for 1988 on LP's. Due the rapid rise of the CD medium, the original plan was postponed and was eventually forgotten. 1996, 25 years later, this music/concert has been made available in a limited edition for the collectors of Joe McPhee's creations. 2006, 35 years later, this newly remastered version is the sole release to celebrate the 30th year of Hat Hut Records.
  23. Will the sound quality be of the nature of the Revenant American Primitives releases? or the Harry Smith Anthology?
