  1. Indeed, it's good! I'm pretty sure I have a rip of an earlier gig by The Trio + Mangelsdorff, less ECM-y in approach. I'll dig around.
  2. man, I've always shied away from that record, but that particular track is really cool in its own way. Love the narration and the chorus. I guess I have more of an appreciation for stuff that's simpler - or at least more gut-level - nowadays.
  3. I really wanted to like this one more than I do. Oh well. Pulled Nipples off eBay years ago in nice shape, black label with a beautiful concertina, for $100. Not "cheap" but entirely fair, so it can be done.
  4. Haven't heard anything post-75.
  5. Cage/Feldman/Brown/Wolff/Ichiyanagi - Music Before Revolution - (EMI-Electrola, GER) Cage sides. Love the interview disc at the end.
  6. I like "hot lotta" even more then "balls" or "machine gun"...it's got this sparseness and restrained thoughtfulness/intelligence to the sound which appeals to me a bit more then the reckless abandonment of some of the early FMP efforts... Although I love Machine Gun too, Nipples is still my favorite early Brötzmann LP by a longshot.
  7. Hot Lotta is a good one - although I always have filed it among Brötzmann LPs. Have No Room for Squares as a blue label UA and The Connection as a Japanese Toshiba mono...
  8. The J.B.'s - These are The J.B.'s - (Now-Again) strong stuff.
  9. Kind of nit-picky, but doesn't Jackie only have one date on Jubilee (i.e. Fat Jazz)? I thought his debut was on Ad Lib, and then later reissued on Jubilee. (So, I guess there are two Jubilee dates.) yeah, correct. The Ad Lib pressing is extremely rare.
  10. Bummer! RIP, and thanks.
  11. Agreed — and that's the impediment (I think) listeners often have in particular when assessing the merit of McLean's Prestige work. It almost can't not be viewed through the prism of what came only a few years later. There's a fair amount of fire in those Prestige solos, even in warmed-over standards (e.g. "What's New?"). There are also times when, just when you think he's churning out a predictable bop line, he stretches it further, four or five more bars, and then avoids all the ending-phrase notes that bop commonly programs into your ear. Bird did this too, of course, but when Jackie does it, you can really hear him think, which leads me to believe that he often wasn't on auto-pilot. Food for thought at least. Agree with you there, Late, after going back to these dates recently.
  12. I would like to hear these some way/some how, even if they stink.
  13. Jackie's Pal is good. I like McLean's Scene a lot too. Gave 4, 5 & 6 a spin recently and it's got some strong playing. While not at the level of the BNs I think the Prestige dates certainly more than hold their own. The Jubilees aren't that hot IMO.
  14. I've heard Lumps before - dunno why it's been so elusive over the years. Some of the purportedly "rare" Lacys seem far more common. Sideways is a nice one.
  15. Was so thankful to be able to witness McLean, Moncur and Hutcherson in concert years ago - Iridium, if memory serves. I interviewed him and he was very kind and gracious.
  16. Dammit, I still need Lumps - it has eluded me for years and years... Nice catch! Now: Masabumi Kikuchi/Masahiko Togashi/Gary Peacock - Poesy: The Man Who Keeps Washing His Hands - (Philips, JP)
  17. Dusty pays well. I may be buying some of these sets from them!
  18. whatever happened to Holt? I've never had a problem with his playing on record...
  19. there isn't enough time in one's life to hear, let alone absorb it all... one thing I'm sorta thankful for, in a bass-ackwards way.
  20. Manfred Schoof - The Early Quintet - (FMP)
  21. http://youtu.be/Nx6KAd_Su3I So his creep factor goes back quite far... ugh.
  22. Swing Swang Swingin' is a strong one - I remember buying a Japanese pressing of it years ago, semi-reluctantly because I'd heard it "wasn't that good" and immediately dug it. It has been a while since it's been on deck but there's never been any reason for me to deaccession it!
  23. In '66, yeah, Bates approached him to be part of the series and he wanted to release quintet/sextet material from '64-'65. It was either going to be a double LP or two separate volumes.
