Look out Austin...Shawn's comin'!!!!
clifford_thornton replied to Shawn's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I split my time between Austin and Houston. If things work out I will be back in Austin and would love to hang. -
Re: McIntyre, I hadn't thought of that but the photos are disarmingly similar.

Damn, dude. You may be the only other person I know who has both Mohawk and Skag Heaven on LP.

Wow, sad news. A unique voice whose work is probably yet to be grasped by those who've heard it. Thanks, Mr. Dickerson, for all you've given us. &RIP.

100 INESSENTIAL, but rather enjoyable
clifford_thornton replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Thanks for that. A few people there surprised me. Mongezi Feza, whom I only know from his recordings with Dudu Puwana. Dizzy Reece is another. Did they change their style or have I been missing something? MG The Feza is a pretty loose session, or pair of sessions, cut in Sweden during the early '70s. The Reece is driving North African-inspired music with some very heavy soloing by Reece & John Gilmore over the top of it all. A fantastic expat date with Art Taylor really pushing things along. -

Right, in the 70s they switched to cellulose for the binding agent, which degrades and peels from the base layer. That's "sticky shed."

MPS Reissues - More Box Sets from Universal
clifford_thornton replied to king ubu's topic in Re-issues
MPS had a lot of great sessions, but very few are seeing the light of day. I mean, in terms of how German and other European jazz outside the FMP scene was documented, esp. 1965-1975, it's a pretty essential label. Where are Gunter Hampel, Manfred Schoof, et al.? (speaking of which, those Wergo Jazz dates need to be reissued!) -
Are we referring to white Americans or shall we include white Europeans, South Africans, etc.?
-
That Jackie is pretty damn good. I mean, no point in swinging our dicks around about how many on the list we have. I feel no great loss not having some of these, and others I'll get to when I get to. If you want to come as close to understanding what this music is about, it's going to take more than 100 records for sure. Me, I'm still scratching the surface of the area that I'm most enthusiastic about.
-
Uh, as long as they're stored properly you shouldn't have any problem. SH is pretty damn near right. Of course, it depends on the material that makes up the tape - I believe that cellulose-based tape has a more pronounced degradation rate (naturally).

I mean, what the fuck. I couldn't even compile a best of 2007 list. There were a number of really good/great records last year, but nothing inspiring a list for me. Plus, some of the best ones I didn't even hear until December/January/February and I'm sure there are still more fantastic dates from last year that I have YET to hear. I don't think I could even give you a "top ten" of all time. I could list ten records I really like and a few that "should be" cornerstones of this music, but... does anyone really care? Not to mention that a few of what I deem "essential" aren't even in-print on CD or never were in that format.

MPS Reissues - More Box Sets from Universal

I don't understand why they're not reissuing better stuff from the catalog. Sorry. -
What vinyl are you spinning right now??
clifford_thornton replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
I hope you are joking and know who George E. Lewis (trombonist) is... -
Keep in mind that that shit is over forty years old, great as it is. He had an amazing run in the '60s and some solid stuff in the '70s, but what we're talking about is more recent. It is erratic, indeed, though there are moments of brilliance. Murray is erratic and occasionally really, really brilliant as well, but he doesn't have the historical buoyance that Shepp does (for better or worse).
