  1. I will admit that I've never liked the way Van Gelder recorded basses that much (or pianos), and it's kind of hard for my 'old deaf' ears to hear what Grimes and Silva are doing on those BN sides. Subtle interplay is really the key to Cecil's music, after all. Maybe the remaster has improved this, but probably not. I threw on the Conquistador LP the other day while relaxing on the couch, and each time I listen to it, it just seems so perfect in its musical architecture _and_ soulfulness. But the bass thing still annoys me.
  2. Oh, and how could I forget Trad Gras och Stenar (Trees, Grass and Stones)...
  3. Reminds me of that Beefheart quote to a groupie: "It sure is cold out there in space. You want to hold onto somethin' warm?"
  4. It looks like a home job, maybe a CD-R with some mild photoshop? The things people will sell...
  5. Damn, beat me to the punch! EDIT: wasn't there supposed to be a pitcher?
  6. My two faves are very simple: Q: "How many kids with ADD does it take to screw in a lightbulb?" A: "Wanna go for a bike ride?" and from my days as a five-year-old (still cracks me up): Q: What's the difference between a dog? A: One of its legs are both the same!
  7. I always thought The No-Neck Blues Band had a nice ring to it. Jackie*O Motherfucker are a great band. They sound like early Amon Duul (not that I was there to see Amon Duul in 1969 anyway). I second the nomination of My Dad is Dead, or MDID for short. "The Taller You Are, the Shorter You Get" is a classic record.
  8. I noticed Dusty Groove carries new copies of the LPs from time to time. They're about $12.99 usually. The only one of those I haven't seen them stock is the Beaver Harris 2LP. I remember that one having some particularly nice Bluiett solos, but I haven't heard it in a few years.
  9. "More Nipples" is, dare I say, even better.
  10. I need to get those Shepp-Roach sets. I saw somewhere that Hat Hut collected both the Roach duo albums as a 4 LP box. Sweet... "Birth/Rebirth" is _great_.
  11. Just keep thinking it's the old rate, and everything'll be all right! 40 Euros = $28.50
  12. Let's see... bought online a copy of the Jimmy Lyons "Push/Pull" 3LP set on Hat Hut, but I haven't got anything in a store in a minute. Almost bought a couple of things yesterday, but decided that they would've been surrogates for something I really wanted (like the Lyons). Might, based on another thread, get that "Leapin' and Lopin'" CD (like I'll run into a nice LP copy anytime soon!). In non music purchases, bought several beers, hummus and salad, and cigarettes (yipes!) over the weekend.
  13. Don't you know, after 6000 they start you over as a Newbie?
  14. Oh yeah, Marge, shoulda known. There's a Frank Lowe that looks sort of similar, if I remember right. I would've loved to have seen Haazz and Co. live; that must have been some heavy shit. There's a reason why, in my online personal ad, I say I'd rather be in Holland. Now, if some chick emails me about some Haazz, it's all over...
  15. Not the _worst_ James Bond movie, though, by any means...
  16. Well, ya gotta eat the pickled ginger slices as a chaser to the wasabi. It cools the burn and gives you a nice, tart edge to start that next slice of roll. Wish I wasn't so inland, else I'd be swimmin' in sushi...
  17. Wasabi does some strange shit, man...
  18. I hope you're joking. Bastard!
  19. We'll see about that, ha ha!
  20. I dunno, Old Style is trappist-quality compared to Grain Belt! Gonna go hit the wasabi peas I just bought and make my forehead crawl down my neck.
  21. Is that Pharoah cut from the aborted Jihad date?
  22. I love Mutawef Shaheed! Can October come any sooner?!?
  23. What kind? I was rockin' some Grain Belt Premium (MSP's finest) earlier.
