yeah, not a bad idea to have it...

I ordered this mainly for my old running buddy Tommy Turrentine. He sounds great, his ideas and sound. Very underrated, and so is Charlie Rouse, the tenor on the date. Sonny's tunes are very nice, too, and he was a very swinging player. I definitely recommend this...

To 86 is a nice long run, though. RIP...

I fixed it. The multiposts happen when I write from a cell phone, and I have no control over it. Sorry, man...

hampton hawes/don asher: raise up off me. it is brutally honest, and riveting. i like hawes way better than art pepper in his autobiography (straight life). imo art pepper is self-aggrandizing, paranoid, and has an inflated notion about his importance in jazz. hampton hawes has no such notions about putting himself up with the greats, though one gets the feeling that he definitely knew his worth. he comes across as a beautiful, crazy mf. i read the book in 2 sittings, could hardly put it down...

i wrote on the other c. sharpe thread that freddie redd's lonely city is a bit disappointing, and only b/c it was not a working band, and there just wasn't enough rehearsal time to make the challenging music really catch fire. if freddie redd could've scared up some gigs for this great band before recording this could've been something really special. the music deserved it, but those are the economic realities of the jazz life...

freddie redd's lonely city arrived today, and i just listened. all i can say is that it's really a drag that working groups were a thing of the past, even by 1985, when this was recorded. these are superb players, 'every chair', but it sounds like there just wasn't enough rehearsal time to make freddie redd's tricky, difficult music with long forms come off properly. (believe me, i know the feeling). it sounds like they are reading the changes on the solos, and it never really catches fire the way it would have had freddie redd been able to scare up some gigs first for this great band. that's the economics of jazz, plain and simple. as some musician replied to an interviewer's question about whether jazz had been 'affected by the economic downturn': 'economic downturn? jazz IS the economic downturn!'. well, at least this is another entry in c. sharpe's scant discography. every little bit helps... freddie redd's lonely city arrived today, and i just listened. all i can say is that it's really a drag that working groups were a thing of the past, even by 1985, when this was recorded. these are superb players, 'every chair', but it sounds like there just wasn't enough rehearsal time to make freddie redd's tricky, difficult music with long forms come off properly. just woke up from a long late afternoon nap. it's around 8:30 pm now, and i know this is going to mess up my sleep later, since i usually go to bed by 10:30-11 when not gigging. i have a rehearsal tomorrow and need a good rest first. damn it...

There still are some left in NY. (Don't know for how long). I bought a lithium battery at the one on 6th Ave. in the Village not long ago...

I like Betaminus, and pretty much all the tunes. The only track that doesn't work for me is Manha de Carnival. It's a bit out-of-tune, and lacks energy and oomph to me. The hook-up between Hall and Raney is telepathic. (Jimmy told me years ago 'actually, Jim Hall is my favorite guitar player')...

Art Pepper's book made me ill. (I admit I read and reread it---prurient interest). He is self-important, paranoid, and has an exaggerated idea of his own abilities, and importance to jazz. Hampton Hawes may be a little crazy, but suffers from no such excesses. He comes off humble by comparison, and takes responsibility for his mistakes and fuck-ups... -
2 nights in a row with Lorazepam. Is this a pattern? (I also notice that my mood has improved, and I am more relaxed). Should I be worried?

he has great insight into and first-hand knowledge of all the musicians in his orbit, especially charlie parker and wardell grey (gray?), but also chuck thompson, oscar peterson, monk, and sonny clark... -
i'd be very surprised if there was not already at least 1 thread about this book. as for me, I could not put it down, and read it in 2 sittings. it is vivid, takes one right into the action, and is brutally honest. i listened to hawes's music while reading, for a total absorbing experience. great swinger, great raconteur he...

Just ordered this from Amazon. I'm in a listening-to-departed-friends mode. Also ordered The Mellow Side of Clifford Jordan (because of Chris Anderson), and Sonny Clark: Leapin' and Lopin' (because of Tommy Turrentine). Listening to the music gets me closer to their spirit...

Last night I woke up 12:25 AM. When an extra 3 MGs of Melatonin didn't work I succumbed and took Lorazepam. (Funny, I thought I had lost the pills, but they were hiding in a flap in my 'medicine bag'). I hope I don't yield to temptation again. I had to be up at 8 this morning, and not sleeping wouldn't do at all...

Just ordered a copy of Freddie Redd: Lonely City, featuring C.Sharpe... There's a track here: https://londonjazzcollector.wordpress.com/2015/02/13/freddie-redd-lonely-city-1985-uptown-records/ C. sounds a bit desultory, and not at his best. But he hardly recorded, and it's a good record. (George Duvivier, Ben Riley, and Clifford Jordan are also on it). I do like Freddie Redd's playing and writing...
