  1. I have a local outlet that does the vinyl OJCs for £4-5. Some of the limited edition pressings too. Thats the sort of price I like. $29 is ridiculous.
  2. I'm sorry to hear this. I've always liked Martin Banks' playing, particularly with the ensemble on the Roland Kirk 'Slightly Latin' LP. He had a nice sound on flugel. Also great contributions to Jimmy Woods 'Awakening' and the Harold Land and Archie Shepp albums previously mentioned.
  3. Yeah, I know, although the vinyl and jacket come from two Blue Note eras rather far apart. You can't always tell a record by its cover/jacket The most common discrepancy I see is Liberty jackets with NY USA vinyl. I have a 'Cornbread' with that particular combo. NY jackets and 47 63rd vinyl is not too uncommon either. The UA vinyl with 43 W 61St NY 23 jacket is a more unusual one I think.
  4. The Olympic 100m dash with the new Mosaic consignment from the post van to indoors before the 'Mrs' can sense that something is afoot..
  5. Great to hear Clark is in good shape. I've lost track of how many LPs he's contributed to hugely over the years. Some unlikely settings too, such as the Grassella Oliphant Atlantic with Big John Patton. Clark is one of those guys who should be around forever. Back to Basie - had a listen today to 'Afrique' with arrangements by Oliver Nelson of material by Albert Ayler among others. I wonder if Teddy Reig sanctioned that one or was it recorded on the quiet. You can almost sence Freddie Green scratching his head in bemusement on some of these tracks.
  6. Didn't George Wallington pass away last year? (I remember seeing the estate sale of some of his Blue Note LPs on ebay).
  7. UA probably had some old jackets from the NY USA era lying around Leeway. Not uncommon. Graham Collier on the deck at present. 'Mosaics' released in 1971 on Philips. To be follwed a bit later on by the 2LP 'Jazz & Poetry 250' set on Argo with Michael Garrick and Rendell/Carr. Plus Laurie Lee, Spike Milligan & co doing the poetry..
  8. Yes John - he was excellent with the Andrew Hill Big Band. Prompt for me to catch a Tony Kofi gig !
  9. If my memory is right, Aric, his comeback was in 1981 at Kix, Boston. Sure created a stir when news of that appearance came out, although I recall reading a report in Jazz Journal that he was already back in the studio working on 'Man With The Horn' prior to this gig.
  10. Must be a scarcity of this particular title in Denmark.
  11. But make sure you include the list of Mosaics in the pre-nuptial agreement.. :rsmile:
  12. Snookie Young Jay McShann
  13. Hank also just did a gig in London with Joe Lovano - to great acclaim. Too bad I missed it.
  14. I'm sure my local HMV still has a stack of 10 or so of these for £4.99ish.
  15. Mosaic Johnny Hodges 1951-55 LP 6
  16. I saw Miles at his 1982 gig at Hammersmith Odeon, London. His first concert at Hamersmith since 1967 with Shorter and co. so expectations were high amongst the London crowd (this was the second night of a two or three night engagement I think). An atmosphere of major expectation that night. Memories are a bit hazy after all these years but the fraility of his appearance left a striking impression. He hobbled onto the stage with support of a stick (must have had a recurrence of the old hip problem), was a bit tentative at first but towards the end some of the old strength came back. Don't remember 'Ife' being played but it could well have been. What I do remember is 'My Man's Gone Now' and the inevitable 'Jean-Pierre' as the closer. The band, as I recall, featured Mike Stern pretty heavily and also Bill Evans. Al Foster I think was on drums. Sounded nothing like the 'Agharta' band, by the way.. The next time I saw him was at the RFH in 1985. By that time Bob Berg was on sax and John Scofield was in the lineup. Al Foster I think had left by then (that gig must have been just before the 'Aura' recording). Miles played a bit of organ/synth on this one, with Robert Irving II also on board. He was looking in significantly better shape at this concert. The best performance I saw from Miles though was in Toronto in 1990 at the Massey Hall. A fantastic performance, it was uncanny the way that he almost mezmerised the audience. I was right up front at this concert and it was fascinating the way that Miles directed the band members - almost like choreography.
  17. Gotta have this super-rare Chet Baker CD.. Baker Mega Rarity
  18. The Mosaic Studio LPs have just gone into heavy rotation by way of celebrating this great anniversary. Happy B-day to the one and only Count !
  19. Have been giving a listen to the 47 W 63rd deep groove of 'Byrd In Flight' over the past few days and I'm stunned at the big sound and presence. Probably the finest sounding BN original that I have heard. Lex Humphries' drum sound is just spectacular on 'Ghana'.
  20. A copy of the 'New Directions' LP by the David Mack orchestra. Mid-60s UK experimental session put out on UK Columbia with Shake Keane and Coleridge Goode. Never even seen a copy of this one before, looking forward to hearing it.
  21. Sam Rivers Walt Dickerson Marshall Allen Louis Smith Bud Shank Herb Geller Lennie Niehaus Bill Holman
  22. I'll second that. A very good album !
  23. With both this set and the Teddy Wilson breathing down my neck, this is going to be yet another expensive Mosaic month..
  24. Thanks for this - looks like its getting perilously close to 'last calls' on this set.
  25. The recent freak floods in Cornwall, England, do seem to indicate that something is badly amiss with our climate.
