Bill Potts - 'The Jazz Soul of Porgy & Bess'
sidewinder replied to sidewinder's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Larry - thanks for your info and insight into this great session. I just checked out the back of the CD and noted the comments about master tapes being lost and the CD being compiled 'from best available LP sources'. Too bad. Fully agree with your comments re: the distinctiveness of the lineup (what a sax section ! B-) ) and the excellence of the charts. The great thing about this find is that it was £6 and pretty well mint, in a place that is not exactly renowned for its vinyl bargains ( ). Great to buck the system ! With a bit of ethyl alcohol solution and a dust up it sounded just great. Sometimes near miracles do happen.. -
I caught this broadcast on the BBC4 repeat late last night and liked it a lot. Gonzales is a very fine player on trumpet and flugel and his band very professional. Would have loved to have seen this performance in person. Heck, looks like they had Joe Ford there on alto and Larry Willis on piano so how can you go wrong? The interview with Gonzales was also straight ahead from what I can see - he's an enthusiastic guy who appreciates this band (stating I think that they've essentially been together about 20 years) and that he had recently moved across to Spain. Good for him - I hope it works out. I've never seen Jerry Gonzales live but I have seen Andy Gonzales with Hilton Ruiz's group in NYC and can vouch that he is absolutely first rate too..

Just wondering about this as I recall some mention back on the old BNBB that the masters might no longer exist. The discussion at the time as I recall related to the somewhat compromised sound on the BN Collectors Choice CD of this one put out in the 1990s. I've never been 100% happy with the sonics of that particular CD. I've recently taken the plunge on a UA deep groove pressing of this one (one of the 'wall to wall sound' series) and it certainly sounds better. Really great session with a stellar big band lineup with the likes of Art Farmer, Harry Edison, Bob Brookmeyer, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Phil Woods and Gene Quill. Really the cream of the crop from the NY studio scene at that time. Strange that this one isn't better known, its up there with the Miles & Gil in my view in terms of interpretation.

Looks like the Teddy Wilson CD set is now OOP..
-
I have a couple of Lexington/NY USA combinations which I found shocking enough - but so far no Lexington/Liberty.

Might want to turn down that volume a tad...

I'll ponder this post the next time I crank up 'Agharta'.. -
Kenton Presents Set Going OOP
sidewinder replied to desertblues's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The yellow slip says that Kenton Presents set #3565 is apparently on its way (but has yet to hit my front porch) along with Teddy Wilson LP set #4956, to keep it company. -
Tragic lost inside one one of Germany's libraries

Think of all the literature across the millenia that have been lost to us - from the dark ages onwards. Here in England we have just a few precious remnants of Anglo-Saxon literature from the years 500 -1000 which were rare survivors from incidents such as this.It must be the same in Germany I guess.. -
This post has got me curious re: the cymbals. I'll have a listen to the NY USA and King pressings this weekend. Great music by the way ! (but there again weren't all of Jackie's 60s Blue Notes great?)
-
High time indeed! You don't "visit" that sucker, you get taken prisoner by it. Willingly. Any gig that caused Nixon to threaten to pull the plug must be worth a listen !
-
No problem ! At that price I'll be tempted to pick up the 'Ghetto Music' myself. Just listening to 'Black Rhythm Happening' this morning. Sounds pretty nice in the heavy vinyl.

From my vague schoolboy recollections of the early 70s, 'King Crimsony' would be a good description, I think. Very much within the prog-rock style of this time.

noticed several BN LP's (mostly NY labels) on eBay
sidewinder replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Nah, forget the NY USAs and go for the Leonard Nimoy reel-to-reel instead.. -
A good summing up. The originals do have the fuller organ sound and do bring out better Grant Green's attack but the Mosaic LPs are very fine indeed. This is a wonderful set, real desert island stuff musically. Most informative booklet on this one too, a great little biography on Mr Young. Truly sad re: the lack of recognition in the 1970s and the sense of disillusionment.

Complete Argo/Mercury Art Farmer/Benny Golson/
sidewinder replied to Out2Lunch's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
My sentiments entirely. Those Japanese Argo and Mercury LPs are too good to sling in the bin. -
$11.50 is a great price.I paid about £15 for 'BRH' !

sidewinder, Do you have the Eddie Gale reissues that 4 Men With Beards put out? I was about to pick up the CD versions on Water when I became aware of the vinyl versions that were out there. If you've got 'em, can you weigh in on how they sound? EDIT: (By the way - Midheaven Mailorder have these for a good price - $11.50! That's $3 cheaper than the CD...) street - I've got the 4MWB vinyl of 'Black Rhythm Happening' but have yet to pick up 'Getto Music'. 'BRH' sounds pretty nice in this reissue, can't compare it to the original but I would definitely say go for it. Well presented with good packaging, new liner notes and heavyish vinyl.

'Hindsight' is a pretty good place to start..

Anybody else here have the BN watch?
sidewinder replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I seem to recall that I was 1 short of the required 10 OBIs and couldn't be bothered at the time. So I bought a $20 Rolex in Kuala Lumpur.. -
The Hutcherson is an interesting one - reminds me quite a bit of the Eddie Gales in terms of its style. Very much of its period, with almost a 'folk' feel. A big plus is that Harold Land is featured prominently and any Hutcherson/Land is worth having in my book.

How do they compare Wolff? (I've got the Mosaic but not the Classic). I think the Classic would be much closer to the original's sound. Like you mentioned regarding the Reece, the Classic has a punchier, more full bodied sound. The sound of the horns are definitely closer to the big, somewhat forward sound you get with originals. The Mosaic seems smoother and possibly easier on the ears as the Classic's highs and upper mid-range, on this title, are a bit raw like some originals. The music is more involving with the Classic. YMMV Thanks !

Mosaic Lp sets: Analog or Digital masters?
sidewinder replied to porcy62's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
I like all of these Miles LP sets (I don't yet have the Blackhawk set so can't vouch for this one). I have most of them in CD and LP and in all cases the LPs offer a very noticeable improvement. Highly recommended, especially as they are in the Q-LP format. The CD sets tend to get played either in the car or whilst I am in the bath.. In fact one of my favourites sonically is the Miles/Gil set - which would seem to come from a digital source based on one of the previous posts? Some of those on that digital list sound just fine to me. The Kenton/Holman/Russo for one - sounds mighty fine on the LP. The Larry Young by the way sounds pretty good too. Certainly better than the CD (I have a couple from this set) but not nearly as good though as the NY USA pressings, if you can get hold of them. 'Talkin' About' and 'Unity' for example. -
Having an in-car CD setup is costing me a small fortune on duplicate CDs. Especially with the last couple of batches of RVGs and the UK 'Impressed Re-Pressed' series.
