  1. A good summing up. The originals do have the fuller organ sound and do bring out better Grant Green's attack but the Mosaic LPs are very fine indeed. This is a wonderful set, real desert island stuff musically. Most informative booklet on this one too, a great little biography on Mr Young. Truly sad re: the lack of recognition in the 1970s and the sense of disillusionment.
  2. My sentiments entirely. Those Japanese Argo and Mercury LPs are too good to sling in the bin.
  3. $11.50 is a great price.I paid about £15 for 'BRH' !
  4. sidewinder, Do you have the Eddie Gale reissues that 4 Men With Beards put out? I was about to pick up the CD versions on Water when I became aware of the vinyl versions that were out there. If you've got 'em, can you weigh in on how they sound? EDIT: (By the way - Midheaven Mailorder have these for a good price - $11.50! That's $3 cheaper than the CD...) street - I've got the 4MWB vinyl of 'Black Rhythm Happening' but have yet to pick up 'Getto Music'. 'BRH' sounds pretty nice in this reissue, can't compare it to the original but I would definitely say go for it. Well presented with good packaging, new liner notes and heavyish vinyl.
  5. 'Hindsight' is a pretty good place to start..
  6. I seem to recall that I was 1 short of the required 10 OBIs and couldn't be bothered at the time. So I bought a $20 Rolex in Kuala Lumpur..
  7. The Hutcherson is an interesting one - reminds me quite a bit of the Eddie Gales in terms of its style. Very much of its period, with almost a 'folk' feel. A big plus is that Harold Land is featured prominently and any Hutcherson/Land is worth having in my book.
  8. How do they compare Wolff? (I've got the Mosaic but not the Classic). I think the Classic would be much closer to the original's sound. Like you mentioned regarding the Reece, the Classic has a punchier, more full bodied sound. The sound of the horns are definitely closer to the big, somewhat forward sound you get with originals. The Mosaic seems smoother and possibly easier on the ears as the Classic's highs and upper mid-range, on this title, are a bit raw like some originals. The music is more involving with the Classic. YMMV Thanks !
  9. I like all of these Miles LP sets (I don't yet have the Blackhawk set so can't vouch for this one). I have most of them in CD and LP and in all cases the LPs offer a very noticeable improvement. Highly recommended, especially as they are in the Q-LP format. The CD sets tend to get played either in the car or whilst I am in the bath.. In fact one of my favourites sonically is the Miles/Gil set - which would seem to come from a digital source based on one of the previous posts? Some of those on that digital list sound just fine to me. The Kenton/Holman/Russo for one - sounds mighty fine on the LP. The Larry Young by the way sounds pretty good too. Certainly better than the CD (I have a couple from this set) but not nearly as good though as the NY USA pressings, if you can get hold of them. 'Talkin' About' and 'Unity' for example.
  10. Having an in-car CD setup is costing me a small fortune on duplicate CDs. Especially with the last couple of batches of RVGs and the UK 'Impressed Re-Pressed' series.
  11. charlesp - Thanks for this. I strongly recommend the 'Star Bright' and will certainly pick up the 'True Blue' when it comes out as I don't have the spare £1000 or so hanging around that is required to secure an original.. porcy62 - the one area of 'Star Bright' that differs from original 47W63rd pressings I own is that element of 'punch' in the sound. It's certainly there on the Classic but is not so pronounced as on originals I have heard of the likes of 'The Sermon', 'Byrd In Flight' etc. The Classic seems almost better mannered, in fact..
  12. Thanks, charlesp - I was under the mistaken impression that Classic had done a 200g 'True Blue' and that it had sold out. I'm pretty happy though with my King GXK of this one, which is certainly better than the Mosaic vinyl. A fantastic session !
  13. (visions of covered wagon with the 'Mosaic' logo escorted by John Wayne & co..)
  14. Yes DrJ, the affinity between Cuscuna and Woody comes across loud and clear in the booklet, which is as good a writeup on Woody's career as any I've read. I fully agree with you that a 'Woody Shaw Live CBS' Mosaic Select would be a great addition to the discography and I would buy a copy of that in a flash.. Still have very fond memories of seeing the band with Turre at Ronnie Scotts on two consecutive nights in the early 80s. Night 1 was so fantastic that I had to get back there and see the whole thing again. Of note on night 1 was sitting next to a very young Herlin Riley, on the night off from his first London gig, and chatting to him about Woody (he was a very big fan). Ahh - those were the days..
  15. Heck, Mosaic only take 5 days to get to the UK normally, with the yellow advance invoice hitting the letter box at day 4. You on 'snail mail' there in Texas, Lon?
  16. Yes, it surpassed expectations for me. After all the negatives I've been hearing on this one over the years I was expecting a total 'train wreck' or Tyronian proportions. Turns out its a pretty enjoyable jam, with Morgan, Hubbard and Spaulding tearing it up on CD1 in particular. The audience also sounds pretty atmospheric (almost as if they had let them out of their cages just for the evening.. ).
  17. How do they compare Wolff? (I've got the Mosaic but not the Classic).
  18. Andrew Hill 'Smokestack' (BN NY USA stereo) Joe Zawinul 'The Rise and Fall of the Third Stream' (Vortex) Wayne Shorter 'Night Dreamer' (BN NY USA mono)
  19. The Hank Mobley went yesterday for just over $400. It was atill at about $250 with 10 seconds to go.
  20. Thanks for heads-up. I have 5 or 6 Classic Records Blue Note reissues and think they are very good. In listening to their Parlan title recently, I noticed many things they seemed to get right. No problem. There's an element of transient 'oomph' to this LP, if you know what I mean, that I associate with the 47W63rd deepgroove originals. I wonder if that is a result of them using the reconditioned Westrex cutting amp? Funnily enough, the sound quality also seemed to improve even more after several plays of the vinyl. Or maybe its just my imagination.. It's nice to have a deepgroove copy of 'Star Bright'. This one seeems to come up for sale only pretty rarely in original form and the copies I have noticed are usually compromised in terms of their surface condition. In any event - recommended ! Anyone have the Classic Records Tina Brooks 'True Blue' and care to comment about the sound on it? (I have a King and its pretty nice but I'm curious about the Classic..)
  21. Yusef Lateef's 'The Golden Flute' on Impulse. Side 2 of this one is just incredible..
  22. Wasn't that the tune they used to play on Benny Hill when the little bald guy was getting chased by all those well-stacked babes?
  23. Wow, thanks for the heads up! My analogue receiver used to be able to pick up 3SAT. Some good jazz on that station. I'll see if it still does the business..
  24. That Butler is quite a nice one ! Currently spinning Bobby Hutcherson's 'Now' on the Liberty/UA pressing. Will be following up with Pete LaRoca 'Basra' on the NY USA stereo pressing.
