  1. I picked up the original LP of 'Realization' back in 1976 in a deletions rack and have just loved it ever since. Dig Patrick Gleeson's spacey & heavy moog sounds and Herbie's great playing as well as the fantastic trumpet and flugel from Eddie. Having not heard 'Inside Out' and being a huge fan of Eddie's 'Mwandishi' era recordings (but not his disco-fied Capitols - hate them) I picked up the 2LP set of the Capricorn material. Not a bad price at £12 and a nice pressing to boot. The label is Soul Brother Records - they are an R&B/Soul/Jazz specialist on Streatham High Street in 'Sarf' London. They do a real nice line in multicolour DJ vinyl carry-bags too .. B-)
  2. The biggest suprise for me with this fine set were the Flora Purim vocals, which I enjoyed immensely. Joe's backing to Flora is just sublime, very sympathetic. The tracks from 'Power To The People' though are probably the standout, although the Lighthouse material recorded with Woody Shaw is also nice. Fine set !
  3. Sweet. I'd love to have that one. I've lost on E-Bay quite a few times on it. Yes, its a nice one. Big John in particular sounds glorious. Found it by pure chance on display in a UK store. The vinyl is great and the front cover is absolutely pristine, original laminate. Just minor marker pen (a price) on the back but otherwise its A1. That was the fastest buying decision I ever made.
  4. Nathan Davis 'London By Night' on Hot House Records, put out by the folks at Mole Jazz..
  5. and closely followed for contrast by the NY USA mono of Harold Vick "Steppin' Out". Smokin !
  6. Archie Shepp and Horace Parlan "Goin' Home" on Steeplechase. Mellow.. -_-
  7. Lawrence Marable 'Tenorman' featuring James Clay. A nice 1980s facsimile of the Jazz-West LP put out by Fresh Sounds. To be followed by another Fresh Sounds LP - 'The Nature of Things' by the Lenny Hambro Quintet.
  8. Isn't that the early 70s Impulse version ? I have a 'Sun Ship' from similar vintage with the Coltrane face logo on the bottom right.
  9. Here's the cover of the original LP:
  10. The black label Liberty pressings sometime sound amazingly good for such flimsy pieces of vinyl. Just spinning Benny Golson 'Blues on Down' - a nice Milestone twofer from the late 70s which documents some nice Jazztet-like sessions for Riverside.
  11. Happy birthday indeed to Wayne. I needed an excuse to work my way through the Shorter Blue Notes today and this is it !
  12. 'She introduced me to Lennon, and he said laconically, "Ah, yes, Paul has the Sun Ras." I asked Lennon whether their label, Apple, would be willing to distribute ESP. He drew himself up in mock horror. "What? Us distribute you?"' I would never have guessed that McCartney was a Sun Ra sort of guy..
  13. Looks like the article in JAW's post may answer that one: "In 1980, I became an assistant attorney general of the state of New York, where I stayed for the next 10 years..." How did some of those ESP masters end up in Holland though?
  14. This fascinating thread has got me curious on reading more about Bernie Stollman and ESP. There's frequent mention in the Leroi Jones 'Black Music', where Stollman comes across as something of a positive figure in something of a sea of sharks. Wonder how he managed to work that fiscal transformation Chuck observed in the 'Phantom Returns' section of his story?
  15. Those previously unissued Holman dates will be to your likings! What a great musician!
  16. Fascinating stuff indeed ! I like the bit about finding that hen's teeth LP of 'Cosmic Music' on that NY trip. Must have been pretty difficult to track down, even then.
  17. Can't wait to hear this set. I like all of the people on this set, especially Bill Holman (who is a real class act and a nice guy to boot). I went for the Teddy Wilson LP set also - I'd never forgive myself if I missed that one.
  18. Some good Prestige twofers tonight. Mobley's 'Messages' and Red Garland 'Jazz Junction'. Nice sound on these mid-70s analogue pressings.
  19. 'Dexter Calling' and 'Our Man In Paris' for me, closely followed by 'Go'. All truly excellent, difficult to pick between them. 'Getting Around' is the only one I haven't really latched on to, although that may change if I ever hear the vinyl.
  20. Thanks ! There was certainly some stuff that sounded familiar. I already knew the tune 'Ife' from the Big Fun double album (I think) which I'd bought some years before. Shame I can't recall more of the details. I was stood very well back in a capacity crowd. Not too distant from my university finals, hence the fact I haven't remembered more of it (aren't the best things in life always interupted by impending crises.. ! )
  21. Incredibly quick. Looks like there's a frenzy on this set, I've just stuck my order in just to be safe..
  22. They've been around since the early 70s. Label run by Alan Bates, the white sleeve vinyl from Black Lion is a common sight over here. I've got one of the Monks (picture of him in blue and red sillouette, can't recall the title).
  23. A whole stack of nice stuff yesterday. Including Duke Ellingon 'Money Jungle' UA mono UK original in mint and heavy vinyl for £8 and Ira Sullivan 'Horizons' Atlantic original for £5. Also a stack of mint Steeplechases for £5 each, including the Shepp/Parlan's and several of the Dex's.
  24. Just listening to Louis Smith 'Prancin' (Steeplechase), to be followed by Ira Sullivan 'Horizons' on Atlantic, Duke Ellington 'Money Jungle' UK UA mono and Jimmy Smith 'Hobo Flats' UK Verve mono.
  25. Just been listening to Jimmy Woods 'Awakening'. Contemporary original, with Martin Banks.
