charlesp - Thanks for this. I strongly recommend the 'Star Bright' and will certainly pick up the 'True Blue' when it comes out as I don't have the spare £1000 or so hanging around that is required to secure an original.. porcy62 - the one area of 'Star Bright' that differs from original 47W63rd pressings I own is that element of 'punch' in the sound. It's certainly there on the Classic but is not so pronounced as on originals I have heard of the likes of 'The Sermon', 'Byrd In Flight' etc. The Classic seems almost better mannered, in fact..

Thanks, charlesp - I was under the mistaken impression that Classic had done a 200g 'True Blue' and that it had sold out. I'm pretty happy though with my King GXK of this one, which is certainly better than the Mosaic vinyl. A fantastic session !

Yes DrJ, the affinity between Cuscuna and Woody comes across loud and clear in the booklet, which is as good a writeup on Woody's career as any I've read. I fully agree with you that a 'Woody Shaw Live CBS' Mosaic Select would be a great addition to the discography and I would buy a copy of that in a flash.. Still have very fond memories of seeing the band with Turre at Ronnie Scotts on two consecutive nights in the early 80s. Night 1 was so fantastic that I had to get back there and see the whole thing again. Of note on night 1 was sitting next to a very young Herlin Riley, on the night off from his first London gig, and chatting to him about Woody (he was a very big fan). Ahh - those were the days..

Heck, Mosaic only take 5 days to get to the UK normally, with the yellow advance invoice hitting the letter box at day 4. You on 'snail mail' there in Texas, Lon? -
Yes, it surpassed expectations for me. After all the negatives I've been hearing on this one over the years I was expecting a total 'train wreck' or Tyronian proportions. Turns out its a pretty enjoyable jam, with Morgan, Hubbard and Spaulding tearing it up on CD1 in particular. The audience also sounds pretty atmospheric (almost as if they had let them out of their cages just for the evening.. ).

How do they compare Wolff? (I've got the Mosaic but not the Classic).

The Hank Mobley went yesterday for just over $400. It was atill at about $250 with 10 seconds to go. -
Thanks for heads-up. I have 5 or 6 Classic Records Blue Note reissues and think they are very good. In listening to their Parlan title recently, I noticed many things they seemed to get right. No problem. There's an element of transient 'oomph' to this LP, if you know what I mean, that I associate with the 47W63rd deepgroove originals. I wonder if that is a result of them using the reconditioned Westrex cutting amp? Funnily enough, the sound quality also seemed to improve even more after several plays of the vinyl. Or maybe its just my imagination.. It's nice to have a deepgroove copy of 'Star Bright'. This one seeems to come up for sale only pretty rarely in original form and the copies I have noticed are usually compromised in terms of their surface condition. In any event - recommended ! Anyone have the Classic Records Tina Brooks 'True Blue' and care to comment about the sound on it? (I have a King and its pretty nice but I'm curious about the Classic..)

Yusef Lateef's 'The Golden Flute' on Impulse. Side 2 of this one is just incredible..

Wasn't that the tune they used to play on Benny Hill when the little bald guy was getting chased by all those well-stacked babes?

Wow, thanks for the heads up! My analogue receiver used to be able to pick up 3SAT. Some good jazz on that station. I'll see if it still does the business.. -
That Butler is quite a nice one ! Currently spinning Bobby Hutcherson's 'Now' on the Liberty/UA pressing. Will be following up with Pete LaRoca 'Basra' on the NY USA stereo pressing.

I'm just listening to the Classic Records mono deepgroove reissue of Dizzy Reece's 'Star Bright', a late 50s session recorded with Hank Mobley and Wynton Kelly. Sounds pretty good to me ! I suspect that the sound is not quite as broad as the 47W63rd original but there again originals of this one are well into the hundreds of dollars, if you can find one that is. These Classics reissues are beautifully presented and the Reece in particular is most definitely recommended.

Totally agree.

I managed to pick up that Vol 1 2LP set today and as the cover has a small tear it was marked down from £15 to £7 (just my sort of price !). Just listening to side B and Bennie Maupin wailing away on Charles Earland's 'Galaxy'. Not as adventurous as the stuff on Vol 2 but pretty nice nonetheless (very 'Headhunter-ish' with a hint or two of Starsky and Hutch and Kojak.. ). I've revised my opinion upwards on the Capitol albums - unfortunately listening to one track of 'Runnin' To Your Love' biased me somewhat in the past.

I'm suprised this wasn't registered during routine checks of fire sprinklers etc. or by the window cleaners when they did the regular clean up. -
This was one of my first Mosaics and still one of the favourites. Sounds particularly nice too in the vinyl format but the CDs are also well up to standard. The set gets quite a 'panning' at times, possibly because of the 70s sound on some of the sessions. I can't say I agree though - the music for the most part sounds wonderful. I even like the vocal numbers recorded with Judy Singh ! Fortunately, you can still pick up copies of 'Stepping Stones' on vinyl for not too many $. Too bad this session was left out of the set.
-
By the way the sound on the Capricorns reminds me a lot of Julian Priester's 'Love Love' (ECM). Not suprising I guess as they were all recorded at Different Fur Trading in San Fran at about the same vintage.

I passed on Volume 1 so far but I'm passing a shop tomorrow which (I think) has it on vinyl and hopefully at the £12 price.
