  1. First Woody album I ever bought - back in 1974 ! Amazingly, my copy has no cutout and no significant ring wear. I want a refund.
  2. Superb playing by Taft Jordan in particular. 👍 Appreciating this one - Thad had just left but there were some nice new arrangements by him on this one.
  3. From the Mosaic Select
  4. Need to dig out your old vinyl copy Bill !👍 A welcome respin of a fine album. This would make a good Tone Poet reissue on vinyl. Art was also featured in the piano-less Gerry Mulligan Quartet of course.

    Sam Jones

Interesting, I saw the Coleman Quartet on that tour and as mentioned, no Sam Jones but for London I recall it was Herbie Lewis (in dungarees) on bass. Maybe he was just filling in for Ray Drummond for that gig. I too was expecting Sam Jones but I remember hearing of his illness at that time. Wish I had a time machine to check out a couple more sets of that ‘Ronnie’s’ engagement.
  6. Thought you might like that one. 😀
  7. Another new one. Bergenfield DG mono pressing. A bit neglected but sounding great after a wash. Intensive clean - sounds fabulous, in typical RVG fashion !
  8. Another decent find for a couple of quid. Even has Steve Voce’s Jazz Journal review included as an insert so a promo copy I guess. Lots of early 80s hype in the sleeve notes emphasising that this is a ‘Digital’ session. Jeez ! Seen this Telarc LP millions of times but never had a copy.
  9. Just picked up a copy of this Herbie Mann/Oliver Nelson offering - don’t think I’ve seen it before. Carmell Jones takes the trumpet solos ! 2-Eye stereo.
  10. No problem. Sorry if my response works out expensive ! Forgot to mention the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble releases as well. Barbara is well featured on all of those, along with husband Jon Hiseman.
  11. My favourite is the double album ‘Paraphernalia Live’, recorded at Hornchurch I think. Another one too look out for is the debut LP by her group Jubiaba, a bigger group with more of a Latin feel. To be honest though your best bet is just to go for the BBC box set. There is stuff on there not represented in her LPs and the quality of most of it is first rate. Plus a fantastic Mike Taylor tribute broadcast where they really hit the mark. Also recommend a read of Barbara’s autobiography, obtainable from the good guys at Jazz In Britain.
  12. I remember when ‘Chrome Waterfall’ came out on vinyl, it was quite a popular release at the time. Gibbs had some crossover success - maybe getting music credits for ‘The Goodies’ comedy TV show helped ! Last time I saw him live he was conducting a youth orchestra as part of his 80th birthday celebrations, covering his own arrangements, must have been in 2017. Very enjoyable.
  13. Disk 7. The Joe Marsala tracks with Dizzy Gillespie are fascinating.
  14. There is a brief piano warble at the start of ‘Euterpe’ on side 2 track 1 but I don’t find it a show stopper. Don’t recall this on the Conn CD, will need to check. Otherwise, this is a very good pressing. Flat and no non-fill etc. Third TP of the day. The music is even better than I remember it and the sonics and pressing quality excellent. This one is a bit of a sleeper !
  15. Another new Tone Poet. It will be interesting to compare with the NY mono but first impressions are good, although I haven’t got to the reported piano warble yet. Probably my favourite of Sam’s Blue Notes and lovely to see with the gatefold photos.
  16. Sounds pretty damn good ! I am hoping to catch Julian Siegel’s Jazz Orchestra touring ‘Tales of the Jacquard’ next week. UK Big Band with a stellar lineup.
  17. I usually tolerate just the very minimum, if at all. If the effect is at all audible or if the arm shows significant up/down movement then that would be a no-no for me. Have to say, haven’t had too much of a problem with this on audiophile issues of the last few years, it was more of a problem with those thin 70s/80s e.g. ABC Impulse, Savoy, Atlantic, Inner City etc.. There seem to be lots of warp reports on the Hoffmann Board, maybe I have been lucky. On recent issues, I don’t think I have had a single issue with warping on Blue Note Tone Poet, Classics or Music Matters. A pretty good record. Some of the worst warping I ever saw were from cheap US cutouts I bought in the 1970s, including some Liberty Blue Notes, Motown, Stax and Atlantics. The rumour was that these were used as ballast in shipping between NYC and Liverpool, then sold for a pittance to the big UK chains. I wouldn’t be surprised if Morris Levy was behind it, nor if they had been stored in or near the ship’s boiler room !
  18. Tone Poet version - sounds pretty good
  19. Arc Records reissue
  20. Yeah, his signature was a work of art. He was kind enough to sign a batch of my Prestige vinyl at Ronnie’s. The reaction with his road manager on seeing them - ‘Ah... vinyl !’ King LP - Vol 2 not Vol 1.
  21. Frederiksberg reissue of this rare private issue LP
  22. We can certainly be thankful over here for the LPs he put out on Black Lion back in the late 60s and 70s. Those LPs raised the profile here for quite a few artists - for example I don’t recall seeing anything much by Charles Tolliver on Strata East but the Black Lions were visible in the shelves. Similar for important releases by Anthony Braxton and Julius Hemphill as domestic releases. The one time I saw him it was quite fascinating getting snippets of opinion a couple of tables away of the recording in progress and how the band were faring. I always thought that he was resident in NYC but it would seem that in recent years he resided in Barnes, Greater London. Important work in promoting and recording some more recent local artists.
