  1. Yeah, they made an excursion South to Swanage some years before the lockdown, where I caught them.

I like it - comes across very much as a ‘Tom Wilson production’ in terms of vibe/sound but it is a nice session and Sun Ra fits in extremely well. Recommended - in fact I will dig that one out for an overdue spin. Not the longest of playing times though, as I recall. Playing it right now - total playing time around 35 mins. I prefer the sound of this CD to the LP I found of ‘Impressions’, for which I thought the sonics were noisy. No such concerns with the CD. Plus you get Sun Ra on spooky harpsichord too ! One other plus for the CD are the good booklet notes, with Dickerson’s recollections of the session. Apparently, the group did a short tour to publicise the album and even appeared on TV in the Philadelphia area.
  3. I’ve just ordered - and was charged $16 flat rate shipping on the checkout. US shipping is a real ‘sting’ these days but I like the music sample on the Nimbus West site from this concert and this 2CD set is sure to be good. The whole process was very straight-forward. Just hope that the shipping is more successful than the recent Mosaic experience. Amazed that this hasn’t already sold out.
  4. I must dig your old CD out later Bill !
  5. ‘Sounds of Synanon’ (King)
  6. Caught that ‘Wingspan’ group live, not sure if Garrett was in the lineup but Nelson and Wallace Roney definitely were. They were touring Mulgrew’s excellent ‘Hand In Hand’ album. Fond memories of seeing Mulgrew - with Art Blakey, Tony Williams plus ‘Wingspan’.
  7. On the occasion I saw this band my ears were ringing - Tony’s drums were loud and I was stood at stage height right in front of his dual bass drums !!
  8. Shocking - glad I managed to stay clear of anything from Outernational, mp3 sources as well.
  9. One is enough for me !
  10. I have a copy of the Aurex ‘82 Jam LP somewhere.
  11. CD1 - New Jazz Orchestra and Dave Gelly Sextet tribute to Mike Taylor.
  12. Only a few weeks now until the Ardley bio is out !

I have the feeling that I caught him live as part of a group led by trombonist Campbell Burnap. Also a proficient cricketer. Here he is as part of the ‘Ravers XI’, a team drawn from the jazz world in the UK back in the day (when batters were still called batsmen). In the centre of the lineup is Frank Parr, a county (Lancashire) and international standard player I.e. the team ringer. Ray Smith of ‘Rays Jazz’ fame is on the far left (looking like a Pepper Adams doppelgänger). Wally Fawkes is in the centre back smoking.

I think Bill Birch’s book even has a street map showing where the place was !
  15. Oh no, yet more sad news. RIP - I was wondering why Peterson had a Carlos Garnett track in the middle of a playlist dominated by Wayne Shorter. I’d forgotten that he was on Andrew Hill’s ‘Lift Every Voice’, amongst other significant sideman appearances.
  16. Livia LP - probably his best.
  17. Just scanned through the ‘Footprints’ bio and there’s no mention of asthma in there that I can see but it would be interesting to know if that was the case.
  18. From the 65-68 Quintet box set. Sublime.
  19. Ha, fair enough. All I know is that I’ve never ever seen an original LP on that label !
  20. I never saw the 80s/90s bands but I did have a ticket for a Western Canada appearance circa 1995, which got cancelled. Big downer that week. I think that was the band with Rachel Z and Dave Gilmour. Remember reading a nice interview with him at that time in the Toronto Globe and Mail where he was enthusing about the CDs and LPs in Sam The Record Man.
  21. Wasn’t it his own label, when he was Prof. at Pittsburgh?
