  2. It was the jello that got me. I hate that stuff !
  3. Kenny Wheeler 'Around Six' (ECM)
  4. This is a really hard one but the current reckoning (subject to change) is: - Thad and Mel - Basie Studio Roulette - Larry Young All on LP format and absolutely indispensible.
  5. Not a good thread to read while eating breakfast. Second the comments on the Christmas Pud with lashings of brandy though.
  6. Last time I visited the Jazz Record Center in NYC some years ago they had a good selection of Mosaics above the racks too. Mainly the more classic jazz titles and not cheap but fairly priced and in excellent condition. Just to see them on sale was an eye-opener. The rare vinyl racks had some nice BN Lexington deep grooves too (Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley titles spring to mind). They were not cheap but would have been good buys based on the crazy prices for this stuff in recent years. I came out with a couple of Tal Farlow Clef/Norgran LPs - again, not cheap but in wonderful condition. Great place !
  7. Stanley T. 'The Spoiler' (BN Liberty mono semi-deep groove edition)
  8. Fabulous. Hope he's out soon !
  9. Just checked mine - seems to be just the same but with 'half a deep groove' ie. it looks like one but is an indent on each side.
  10. Yeah, fair point. Maybe I should have put a bit more trad/classic jazz in there.
  11. Well - some you win, some you lose I guess.. If it makes you feel better Dan, CD2 is a 'flute-free zone' I think but it does have some clarinet so listener discretion advised !
  12. Thanks for your comments MG - some very interesting ones. I never thought of Track 1 as Hammer Horror sountrack stuff but I can hear where you're coming from. The loud trumpet style could also conceivably come from the Kirchin Band, based on what they were doing in the late 50s. By the way, I was just checking the vinyl transfers on these disks through my system and noticed that the sound was a little on the thin side. Certainly not up to standard of previous transfers. I think I know what has happaned - in upgrading to external phono stage I took out the internal boards in my pre-amp, so the signal going into the soundcard is low-level raw and doesn't have the benefit of going through that stage. Not sure how to get round this one other than putting the boards back in whenever I do vinyl transfers. Sorry for any resultant loss of quality (and as a vinyl hound I'm embarrased ).
  13. Not French or Belgian - but it is European group ! :rsmile:
  14. Not Rhoda, but interesting suggestion. It's actually a small-group track but I agree the recording makes it sound bigger. Not Ponder though.
  15. Not Les !
  16. Nope - but (hint) - there is a connection to those guys !
  17. You'll be kicking yourself to Kingdom Come when you hear who it is !
  18. Not from a 45 !
  19. Not Dankworth or Gibbs (and it is a real 'live' album)
  20. Nope - Not Basil Kirchin (of Ivor and Basil Kirchin fame)
  21. 12 - Amazing how everyone thinks this track has bass clarinet but it's actually baritone sax ! My apologies - there is clarinet at the start of track 12. The baritone sax comes in a bit later, after the electric piano solo.
  22. I think it works out as a tradeoff. For me the sonics of the LP usually work out best, although at the risk of the odd click and bump. It's definitely true that the higher-end turntable and cartridges compensate for vinyl imperfections (and I suspect lots of people have been put off for life by some of the kit that used to be on sale back in the day). Also that some pressings are much more tolerant of damage/imperfections than others. Can't argue that CDs win hands down on convenience, portability and ability to cram lots of music on one disk though. As has been mentioned a lot, both media have distinct major advantages and disadvantages. I would agree with previous comments that compression in downloads can be a pain in the neck and very noticeable - although it is tolerable when listening on an I-Pod.
