  1. Damn - this is just sad news. I knew the place as the 'Cafe des Copains' during my time in the city and always though that it was perfect of its type, as a small intimate venue. Great music, generally appreciative audiences and very nice food, as I recall. Extremely civilised ! Probably my favourite evening in there was one time it was full up and got to stand with my beer smack bang next to John Lewis as he did his mini-suite 'Paris' tribute. Incredible ! The memory recalls great evenings listening to Pat LaBarbara, Jay McShann, Sir Charles Thompson, Joanne Brackeen.... (sigh)
  2. The DeJohnette/Scofield/Goldings group is on at North Sea on Saturday night next week - look forward to checking it out (haven't yet heard the CDs).
  3. That's still one of the best box sets out there. Not a dull moment on it and superbly compiled by 'Boxman' Koyama.
  4. 'Red Garland's Piano' (Prestige Bergenfield)
  5. PM sent on the Dizzy Reece and Davis 'Seven Steps' !
  6. Good question. My guess is that this would have originally been issued in the UK on Fontana (an imprint of Philips), as UK CBS didn't start operating until around 1965/66. Certainly, this is the case with 'Miles Ahead' and 'Porgy and Bess'.
  7. There sure is ! Big Miller was very much loved on the Edmonton scene.
  8. Related to Brooke Shields?
  9. Italy were very unlucky not to score with those two post hits very early on in extra time. That would have sewn it up.
  10. What a fine game ! Two very well matched sides but Italy just had that extra 'magic ingredient X' and created two wonderful goals in the very last minutes. Sorry for Germany - Klinsmann very sporting in applauding the winning goal. I guess the meltdown today in the Italian League will go on the back burner after this result !
  11. Thanks - yes, seen it. Have met Martino on a couple of occasions and have found him to be an extremely courteous and thoughtful guy. Incidentally, of all the acts in the line up for this Fest, it is Yusef Lateef with the Belmondos that fires me up the most by far. I've gone all these years without ever seeing Yusef live and it's great that he's putting in an appearance here at North Sea (not sure if there are any other European dates planned).
  12. Yep, I'd deduced that - but what a shame to have to pass on the Martino !
  13. Splendid ! Still to book my flight but it shouldn't be too much of a problem. My first North Sea too (hopefully). Can't beat the lineup at this Fest. Dillemas galore - should one go and see Yusef Lateef or (at same time) the Pat Martino Quartet?
  14. Might be worth waiting until 'zwei' get a few more budget Euro-Mosaics in !
  15. Have a great one !
  16. oh, lucky you! enjoy! you, too sidewinder! Thanks !
  17. Any other board members going along to this mammoth Dutch jazz feast? North Sea Jazz Festival 2006
  18. Holy shit - I missed the Brazil/France game. It's 30C and baking sun over here and I missed 2+ hours of quality sunbathing time thanks to Beckham & co. Should have stayed on the sunlounger.
  19. Moron of the year !
  20. Half time England: 0 Portugal:0. Time to bring on that stuffed sheep ( ) and for the rest of them to wake up. Hargreaves is looking by far the most committed player in the white strip.
  21. Phil Woods Call Cobbs Lins, Ivan Ivan the Terrible Ivar the Boneless Boney James
  22. On a jazz-related note, I've read that British tenorist Ronnie Scott was friendly with Robert Graves and he and his ex-wife used to stay with Graves in Majorca (think that's where Graves' house was) back in the 1960s.
  23. Congrats to both of you. That is a great achievement !
