Possible to sell large collection in Europe or Asia?
porcy62 replied to dsockel's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Not enough elements to judge, BUT as yurpeans I can tell you that: if you're talking about 5/10 bucks records I can just type any title on eBay, or Google, right now and I can have half a dozen of it for that price. In case of truly mint records you can go up to 20, even 30 bucks, BUT you have to consider the time you'd spend on put them on eBay, the fees and the time for packaging and shipping. Obviously you could rely on the eBay crazyness: pretty common records one years ago, could fetch $$$ tomorrow, but it's a bet. If I were you, and I'd have the money and time, I'd buy the collection and enjoy it, selling the stuff I don't care, a time consuming strategy, but at the end you could end owning a good personal collection at zero cost. My two cents. Seriously, you should check the collection out, before buying it. -
I think that is one of the sign of the decadence of today's music industry: I mean trying to exploit the fame of renowed actor/actress, even model like Carla Bruni, in order to sell few cds is depressing.

I agree here too. Its not a 'maintenence need' where a human needs things like food, shelter or water to survive, but more of an 'actualizing need' which develops a human's personality, creativity and values. True, but if you think about what happened in another 'extreme' conditions, like Auschwitz, you can see that music, as well as other 'artistic' forms and 'unessential' activities, were part of the psychological survival strategy in order to preserve self-esteem as human being.

I find your lack of faith disturbing. -
No, but if I am near death from disease, I hope whoever is taking care of me at that point knows enough to be playing some good tunes. Me too. That's remind me Beethoven that just before his death asked for some music sheets of Haendel to read.

Somehow missed all of the drama at the time.....what was the avatar? it was the flash gif that rostasi used ages and ages ago of a nebishy black line drawing character at the computer proceeding to smash his entire body into smithereens on the keyboard. it is really a beautiful little piece of animation. Yes, like the cartoons loved by Bart and Lisa Simpson. Nice one. -

The offending item that was threatening our society was removed. Good boy, now for your 'offensive' avatars that are threatening the moral temper of big 'O', I suggest you to post twenty 'Pater Noster' and replace your avatar with this one -

MG, is it the easiest way to collect sources for your fourthcoming Ph. D. dissertation? Man, we should go deep in antropology to answer at this question. Is it 'art' in general essential? Are there some small forgotten tribes in amazon jungle who actually doesn't do 'music'? Wich is the defintion of 'community' and wich the 'culture'? Too ambitious task even for the big 'O' community.

Yep, I agree on both, though the late Allen's movies aren't such great IMO. Never dull? Yes. Enjoyable? Yes, but not great.

The only one I bought is 'Made In Japan', in 1974, my first ever LP purchase, (or second one after 'Dark Side Of The Moon' I don't remember.) I always thought that album was just alike the first time I had a complete sexual intercourse, carved in my memory. Said that later on I discovered Led Zeppelin, Zappa, etc. and most satisfying sexual relationships.

Nice one! I've got a later dutch pressing, with round cover obviously! But the rarest edition is the one with squared disc (in the round cover) -_- Right and you need this tonearm to play it

Is it you, Suzy Creamcheese?

From what i've heard, most of the older tape stocks of the 50s and 60s are pretty damn hearty. It was only when they changed the formula in the 70s that things got messy, requiring "baking" and stuff like that. Hoffman works with old tapes all the time and has done a remarkable job over the years locating and using the original masters rather than copy tapes; I'd give him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the structural integrity of the tapes. It could be, actually older "Ampex" (one inch) videotapes seems lasting better then later formats like U-Matic or early Betacam SP, whatever the storage conditions. Italian national broadcasting (RAI) never had such great facilities in term of storage. Though, IF videotapes are made of the same stuff of audiotapes, ageing is not good in my daily experience. Now what about a glass of twelve years old single malt, (a thing that acquires taste with years) ?
-
Working every day with video tapes, I know very well what you're saying about ageing. At the same time in order to preserve them, you have to play them once in a while, so I don't see any huge damage for master tapes, but I may be wrong about audio tapes. The point is that back then they had a fresh master and poor playback systems, so the LP mastering was adressed to those stuff. Now they have better playback system and an old master. Hard to pick a choice, one must go different for every title.

Actually, record labels are fueled by this obsessive mania, these delusionaires that repeatedly spend money on the same titles. Exactly. And this poses a long list of questions about music business. 1) Master tapes are private's owned, I spent money to record them, (or buy the copyrights), why should I care about music rather then business? 2) If I care about music who pays for the restoration and the storage of the tapes? 3) In the age of illegal downloading, obsessive maniacs are among the fews who are ready to pay big bucks for music (or the sound). Why blame them since they support the business? 4) If music is a public cultural heritage, should the Library of Congress buy the master tapes, preserve them and made available for free on the web lossless files? (In this case copyrights laws should be restricted in shorter term, 50 years or even less.) And we could pose more questions and open the usual can of worms.
