  1. Not entirely sure, but perhaps the Grappelli Sextet is also new to the JiP series. There are a few Oscar Peterson/Grappelli collaborations but as quartets not a sextet. I'll definitely take a closer look when Dusty Groove gets this in stock.
  2. I picked up the Nathan Davis. I saw the Blakey and the Art Simmons. They may have had more. If I am reading everything correctly, the first 7 tracks on the Art Simmons are on the JiP release Piano aux Champs Elysees, but then there are 8 or so bonus tracks including "Rock n' Roll" and "Black Coffee." I can't track down if they have been out in another format, so currently I am leaning towards ordering the new Simmons release as well. With a little digging, now it appears the bonus tracks may have come out (as bonus tracks) on the CD Simply Heavenly: http://www.amazon.com/Simply-Heavenly-Original-Broadway-Tracks/dp/B0012GJFQ6/ref=cm_rdp_product Probably makes more sense with the Simmons CD, but I'll have to think about it a bit more now.
  3. I believe all the hard to find reissues are CDRs (when it says it is a special order). I bought a few and they seem fine to me. They do stock in-print CDs as well, like the ones from Naxos, that wouldn't be worth creating as CDRs. I certainly think they are legit, but I didn't go look up their business license or anything. The website says ArkivMusic is a subsidiary of Steinway Musical Instruments, Inc. They are based in the US. So most likely all reissues are licensed properly, but I guess you never know nowadays.
  4. A few more for today 6/2/2011: consolidated
  5. I'm definitely in a poor frame of mind since I threw my back out, lower and more painful than ever before. I actually broke down and visited a chiropractor. I'm willing to put up with the quackery-side of it (all the acupuncture charts lying about) to get this straightened out. I'm also thinking that I have to go back to work tomorrow, pain or no pain. Damn. On the more positive side of things, the other day I walked out of Dusty Groove with more money than when I went in. That's only the second or third time that's happened for me. Should be happening a lot more in the near future...
  6. Heck, if they wanna give me it in cash, they can spell my name however they want. I thought the Decision was overblown and pretty tacky, but I'm pretty much over it. Truly, I have many, many other things to worry me late at night...
  7. All but one order has been shipped out. Thanks again! Some housekeeping on the Last Chance items. May be worth noting that the obis for these two CDs turned up: 25 Freddie Roach Mo Greens Please (TOCJ w/ obi) 25 Freddie Roach Down to Earth (TOCJ w/ obi) New listings 6/1/2011 consolidated 9 Barney Wilen Talisman 9 Barney Wilen Sanctuary ($15 for both Talisman & Sanctuary) Thanks for looking. While I would like to see Cassandra Wilson, I've found that the acoustics at Petrillo are pretty tough for singers, so I may pass on her show.
  9. Small chance I will see Miguel Zenon at Jazz Showcase tomorrow. Depends a bit on the weather and how things go with the in-laws tomorrow afternoon.
  10. Combination of Board software and my computer conspired to eat my last message, which is really annoying. I'll try to repeat the gist of it. Agree Grossman's Life and Fate is a keeper. Unfortunately, I only got 100 pages in when I had to return the library copy. Ordered my own and may read it this fall when I am on my own for a few months in Vancouver (probably Proust as well). Just read John Rechy's The Miraculous Day of Amalia Gomez. Rechy is best known for City of Night, but this is an interesting read. In general, this is very much a book in the "the city is hell" vein. I particularly like this passage: Next up is Moth Smoke by Moshin Hamid.
  11. I'd say Toshiko Akiyoshi's big band qualifies. I understand she's broken it up (at least I think so), but she has quite a number of recordings, including those on the Mosaic Select.
  12. Congratulations are in order re: the job offer. I can remember back to 1997 when I was last offered an exciting job offer. I felt on top of the world! Thanks. I have been feeling low for a long time. It has been a very brutal job market, particularly in my sector. To feel that you have options again is such a morale-booster.
  13. I'm thinking I'm a combination of sad and mad about the Bulls' collapse in the 4th last night. However, this affects my wife far more than me. I am kind of cerebral about it, whereas she really takes it to heart. On the other hand, I am excited (mixed with a bit of trepidation) about finally landing this job offer in Vancouver, BC. It looks like a very good match for me, and I plan on taking it, even though this will disrupt my family life, to say nothing of the fact that I'll be moving again in a very short space of time (hence selling off most of my CDs...).
  14. Very sad today. I have no idea why the Bulls went out like a bunch of punks. (And for that matter, why Thibs refused to play Kurt Thomas in game 4 -- we might well have won that one.) It was such a total collapse in the 4th that you have to wonder about their mental strength. On the whole still an amazing season, but clearly Rose needs one more guy that can reliably deliver points and help spread the floor (hands down, Mr. Boozer and Mr. Korver). Guess we'll see what they do in the off-season.
  15. Thanks so much for the orders! Holds updated and I'm pulling items together for shipping. More should be listed tonight. I'm just going to add this directly to last chance: (All on Hold) Hip Jazz-Bop compilations (Black Lion material) Tourist Season No Time For Poetry Not Your Typical Self Made Man Batteries Not Included Need A Guide? This Is Your Brain Over A Million Served Wealth Is Overrated Chaos Out Of Order At the time there were only 9, but apparently, they are up to 24 now! Anyway, $2 per CD for singles, or $15 for all 9.
  16. Interim list Consolidated below
  17. I am trying to consolidate lists and ensure that the CDs I am listing have not already been sold. I am probably halfway there. I think the best way is to start over here with three lists that I will update periodically (ideally twice a week). The first list is the last chance list -- things on this list will only last another week before going to Reckless Records or Dusty Groove or in exceptional cases eBay. Nearly all will be $5 or less. The second list will be the interim list that will stick around 2-3 weeks before the items move to last chance. Finally I will have the new offerings list. I have tried to double check the condition of all CDs and indicate flaws or promo stickers/UPC holes etc., but I will probably make a few mistakes or overlook something. Contact me if unsatisfied and we can work something out. As before, I offer free shipping to the US (and $2 off to Canada or Europe) if 3 or more CDs are purchased. CDs will normally be shipped media rate, typically in cases within the US/Canada and not in cases overseas, unless you specify otherwise. Insurance or tracking can always be provided at cost. If the order reaches $100, I will provide both for free (if to the US). 5 or more CDs will result in 10% off savings, provided at least one CD is from the interim or new offerings list. I'll put the Last Chance list here and the other two in separate posts. 18. I was somewhat flabbergasted to get a message from yourmusic trying to convince me to join Columbia House's DVD club. I can only imagine it will be going the same way as yourmusic in another few years...
  19. The writer of the blog is from the UK, so he intentionally/ironically blanked it out to make a statement. I think this is clearly a case where UK law is so unbelievably stupid, it's hard to imagine anyone taking it seriously. Not only you can't report the details of a topic (like a normal injunction) but you can't even report that there is an injunction on the issue itself. Very Alice in Wonderland.
  20. I'm thinking that one man's mead is another man's poison. Listening to Woody Shaw's Solid, deciding whether I should keep it or sell it off with everything else, and I listen to the last track (Woody Woodpecker song) which some reviewers on Amazon praised. I think it is silly and not a worthy end to the CD (so it becomes an easy decision to sell). It reminds me too much of playing The Flinstones theme in jazz band in H.S., and I wasn't a fan of that either...
  21. I'm thinking that the slate of upcoming Criterion releases have far more than the normal number of retreads or movies generally available elsewhere. Now in some cases, this may be the first R1 release, but I have R2 releases of both Malle's Zazie dans le Metro and S. Ray's The Music Room, so I am very unlikely to purchase those (I might Netflix them eventually). But certainly good for some. There are two DVD that seem pretty "fresh" to me: People on Sunday and Ichikawa's The Makioka Sisters. Reasonably likely to buy the Ichikawa. Once again, I am finding that the Eclipse series is more interesting than the mainline Criterion series. This box looks fascinating: Eclipse Series 28: The Warped World of Koreyoshi Kurahara
  22. Most of what I am thinking is unprintable (at least in a "family" forum). And we are "family," aren't we?
  23. Really? My Amazon deliveries (and there are a lot of them) are almost always UPS. The items I order from private sellers often come via USPS, however. Hmmm - I think all my Amazon comes USPS, but I also make sure to always go for the free shipping.
  24. Ok, I am now intrigued by this whole thing. As far as I can tell, the remastered Fantasy CD still has only 6 tracks. I can't tell from the description whether it still has the Mingus overdubs or not. The Jazz Factory claims to have removed overdubs and has 14 tracks. It came out around 2004. There is something called Jazz at Massey Hall from 101 Distribution with 15 tracks, which came out in 2007 (so maybe they ripped off Jazz Factory?). It also claims to have removed the overdubs. So I guess I am baffled as to where these PD labels could have come up with a way to get at the original tapes. What is the official release? And why can't I seem to find any "legit" release with more than 6 tracks? They wouldn't lie would they? Perhaps they added the Bud Powell Trio tracks from the same concert. Well, Amazon reviewers are not the sharpest crayons in the box, but I think even they would have noticed that 8 tracks didn't have any horns. It probably is from the Debut box. Anyway, perhaps back on track, I came across this Junior Mance two-fer from Fresh Sound: Mance 2-fer What's particularly intriguing is it is clearly still under copyright (recorded as late as 1973) and they claim (or at least strongly imply) that they had Mance's blessing to go ahead (I'm certainly unclear whether he could simply waive rights or not). Oh so intriguing. Anyway, it doesn't look essential, but still an interesting pairing.

Always been kind of interested in this set; maybe one day I will break down and get it.
