  2. Very exciting! I will put in an order for this soon. Glad that I did hold off on going the download route. I wish that some Ellington was included, and if there is a later release of it (even a DL), I'll probably pick that up. I wonder if there is enough additional material to make up an entire 2nd box set, but I would assume not (in terms of quality of preservation and then reissue rights).
  3. Somewhat inspired by the music that didn't make it to LP thread, I searched again and found Dolo Coker's Third Down LP for $15 and ordered that. It will be quite some time before it is in my hands and I reassemble my turntable, but I'll try to be patient. I'm leaning towards ordering Night Train by Jimmy Forrest, a compilation of his early material on Delmark. I'm holding back for the moment because I think I probably owned this at one point, but maybe I just saw it a lot back in the day when I used to drop into the Jazz Record Mart a lot. In either case, I don't have it in my collection now.
  4. I only stumbled across this today. The album is still available for $2.50, so I went ahead and took the plunge. I think I do have all of Rudresh's CDs (or at least downloads). I should dig out Codebook, which was an early favorite. I actually got the inner ring decoder signed by Rudresh back when he and Vijay played the Green Mill.
  5. That would be great if it happens. I think they slowed down a lot on the reissue front. It turns out that a university library has a copy of Third Down, but I don't know if it circulates, and I am not particularly close with any York University staff or students unfortunately...
  6. As mentioned above Dolo! did come out on CD, as did California Hard. Third Down did not, nor did a solo LP called All Alone (though they clearly should have called it Dolo Solo!). I came pretty close to pulling the trigger on a used copy of the Third Down LP, but shipping costs are such a killer these days. Now the price is beyond what I am willing to pay, but I'll still keep an eye out.

I'm quite torn on whether to just push through to say (to myself) that I've read it or just skip it, since I'm quite sure it isn't going to get any better. I wouldn't mind the aimlessness and the limited "action" so much, but the inner monologue of Frits is frankly that of a simpleton.
  8. We put up the tree very late this year, but it is done. Presents were 50% wrapped last night, 50% tonight. This year, in a break from tradition, my daughter wanted to read 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. I think they are finally in bed but not asleep, so I'll get to the wrapping in a little while. Best wishes for the season and a hope that 2018 is a better year for us all!
  9. I managed to sneak in The Shape of Water after all (and hope to catch The Last Jedi this weekend -- it has been quite a challenge avoiding spoilers!). It was entertaining and mostly looked good (not the rain*), but it was completely predictable. I was more interested in the Cold War fable trappings (the cars, the boxy houses in suburbia) than the fate of the main characters. It's also probably impossible to avoid comparisons with ET in a movie like this, but there are several things lifted from ET (and arguably Dark City), as well as a scene taken almost verbatim from Delicatessen. For some reason I thought it was PG, and it was much racier than I expected, but in fact it is rated R. Overall, a qualified thumbs up... * The rain looked completely fake. Maybe it should have been added in digitally... BTW, I saw a trailer for the next Wes Anderson film -- Isle of Dogs. Looks absolutely horrible in all senses of the word.
  10. I got so fed up with the subscription approach that I did download LibreOffice and use it from time to time. It also happens that we have some sweetheart deal through work to get MS Office each year for $12, so in a few weeks I'll probably buckle under and just order that. (There's actually another legacy software that I use (MS Office Document Imaging) that doesn't play nice with LibreOffice.)
  11. Has anyone seen Del Toro's latest, The Shape of Water? I'm probably going to catch it next week. Then the following weekend I'll take my son to The Last Jedi. I figure some of the hype will have died down and we won't have trouble getting seats.
  12. I actually decided to delay The Evenings a bit. Not because it is exceptionally boring, but because it is set in the last week or so of Dec 1946, and I might as well sync up with the calendar. I'm nearly done with Narayan's The Guide. While not a particularly complicated story, it is still a bit of a departure for Narayan in that it alternates chapter by chapter between the present and the past in telling the story of a tour guide turned mystic. I'm enjoying it, as I did his early short stories. I do somewhat regret not sticking to my earlier plan of reading one Narayan novel (and perhaps 2 by Mahfouz) to get through the whole lot in a year. But I'll still get there, just on a delayed time table. I'm about to launch into Trollope's The Way We Live Now. I'm somewhat familiar with the characters from watching the first episode of the BBC version, but then I decided I really did want to read the novel first. So the main challenge will be to try to get through this by the 22nd. Fortunately I do have some time off from work...
  13. I agree that he is a bit too disinterested in the whole situation. He really abdicated his responsibilities, and it is quite a wonder that any of these marriages come off. He certainly had nothing to do with them. Actually, yes, Austen says a couple of times that Elizabeth was her mother's least favorite child, probably at least in part because she was her father's favorite. Also, Elizabeth shares her father's perspective that her mother (and youngest two sisters) are empty-headed ninnies, and even if she holds her tongue (which she doesn't always), people generally don't like other people who hold them in contempt. I'm definitely glad that I returned to these, particularly Sense and Sensibility. I'm going to try to get through Emma and Persuasion in 2018.
  14. I agree P & P has a killer opening line. Mr. Bennet is correct in knowing that his wife is very foolish and her idea of what makes a good match is shallow. He rightly blames himself for making a very bad match with his wife. All that said, he basically abdicated raising the girls, so it isn't that surprising that several of them turned out poorly. What is odd is how much antipathy Mrs. Bennet has towards Elizabeth, which allows her to seize the opportunity to move her out of the household when she suggests Mr. Collins marry Elizabeth (and then shuns her for months after she refuses the match).
  15. I'm nearly done with Bove's A Singular Man. Too long for what it is, sort of a nothing burger. It's about a man, dependent on others for charity most of his life, who marries far above his station, but the happy couple never gets their share of the family fortune. While he is "singular" in that he doesn't really rail against fate or go around begging for help (like the self-indulgent Tommy from Seize the Day), he also does little in the way of work. For instance, he seems to give up a job in advertising without any kind of a back-up plan. I'm kind of allergic to Bove's characters and their way of thinking. (I really detested the main character of A Man Who Knows; here I am more indifferent.) I probably ought to just stop reading him. Another odd novel about a dissolute character who doesn't really want to work is English, August: An Indian Story by Upamanyu Chatterjee. The main character is a young man who has won a position with IAS, but seems to want to do nothing but laze around all day smoking weed and occasionally reading Marcus Aurelius. There is a lot here about the absurdities of trying to govern India through a civil service that is thoroughly corrupt, but it is still a novel centered on a callow young man, and the narrative/plot doesn't do much to challenge his self-centered view. After this, I am changing it up and reading Death by Black Hole by Neil DeGrasse Tyson. I picked up an autographed copy at the Hayden Planetarium on my last visit to NYC. Then Gerard Reve's The Evenings, which was only recently translated into English. I think it is somewhat in the same vein as the other novels I just read, but perhaps I will like it more. Or I may just be fooling myself.

  19. Closing in on Pride and Prejudice. While it may be somewhat heretical, I definitely preferred Sense and Sensibility, in large part because I preferred the secondary characters. Emily Bennet's younger sisters are a bunch of annoying simpletons. Also, for a man who didn't care much for his wife, Mr. Bennet sure had a lot of children, though I suppose they were desperately trying for a male heir. After this, a bunch of short stories from R.K. Narayan (Lawley Road and An Astrologer's Day) and probably The Guide as well.
  20. I do stream from time to time, though I mostly use Hoopla. It's only relatively recently that Spotify came to Canada. It does appear that most Pi Recording albums are on Apple Music. I will try the 3 month free trial and see how it goes, namely making sure that I'm not blocked from using the service.
  21. Was listening to BBC 3 World on 3 program, when I heard a track off of Sweet As Broken Dates: Lost Somali Tapes From the Horn of Africa. The track was Rag Waa Nacab Iyo Nasteexo by Aamina Camaari. I really liked that, but I can't speak to the rest of the CD. Anyhow, my library has ordered the Sweet As Broken Dates CD, so hopefully before too long I can listen to the rest.
  22. I see that they just lost the rights to carry Pi Recordings, which is a shame, as I had a few half downloaded albums that I can't finish up now. Way, way back they lost Prestige/Riverside/etc. I'm kind of losing interest at this point and think I'll cancel my subscription, though I'll take one last look to see about any Steeplechase and Black Lion (listed under 1201 Music) titles I am missing.

The actor, John Hillerman, who played Higgins in Magnum P.I. has just passed away: https://www.thestar.com/entertainment/2017/11/09/magnum-pi-actor-john-hillerman-dead-at-84.html I haven't seen reruns of Magnum in ages. I liked it as a kid, but don't know how well it stands up today (or rather how much have my tastes changed). I think even then I had just a bit of a soft spot for Higgins, who was so often the butt of Magnum's jokes. RIP
  24. I've actually been reading a fair number of short stories, in addition to various novels. I'm currently midway through Anthony Trollope's Lotta Schmidt and Other Stories. These are generally pretty solid stories. One or two have a bit of a twist (predating O. Henry), though in a way I was impressed by a story about a young writer, on the verge of starvation, who doesn't miraculously acquire a patron at the 11th hour, which I had been expecting from the set up. The denouement was a bit more interesting than that. One book that just came out is F. Scott Fitzgerald's I'd Die for You and Other Lost Stories. Some of these are stories that were a bit too dark for periodicals of the time (or at least under his byline, given what the public expected from him). But in most cases, he had a policy of refusing to accept any editorial advice, and then just filed the stories away if they couldn't be sold "as is." I'm very sorry to report back that, in most cases, Fitzgerald was wrong and far too proud at this stage of his career, as these definitely could have used editing. Quite a few are corny (especially his movie treatments turned into stories), and one has so many factual errors (claiming that the subway up in the 200s in Manhattan only had service every hour) and such ridiculous plot contrivances about an underage cab driver that I actually found it unreadable and stopped midway through. Even his literary agent begged him to fix the errors, but Fitzgerald refused. The first story in the collection (The IOU) was decent and was recently (and belatedly) published by The New Yorker. The second was improbable but at least readable. I personally didn't care for the title story (due to the over-the-top sexual magnetism of one of the characters), but it was reasonably well written and some people will like it. And that's about it. The rest are basically a mess. So this is one for Fitzgerald fanatics only, and even then I would only borrow it from the library. In about a week or two, I'll get to Mordecai Richler's The Street, which is a slim volume of stories set in Montreal's St. Urbain neighbourhood, with Duddy Kravitz as the most notorious resident.
  25. I finally got around to seeing this. The room was relatively packed, so I am a bit surprised to hear the media narrative of this film is that no one is going to see it and that it will lose a ton of money (actually it has sort of broken even already if you don't count marketing, and I saw very little marketing, so I don't know what they spent). In a way, this almost seemed like a throwback to 80s era films with a fair bit of nudity, some in the service of the plot and some a bit more gratuitous. It felt like a long film (and many people slipped out in what was essentially the third reel just to hit the rest room). I just read that the original cut was 4 hours long! So perhaps there will be a director's cut here as well. (Minor spoilers) I agree that it is ridiculous to say it is misogynistic just because the main villain is a female (even one who is gratuitously evil to another woman). You can say that there are some tired tropes here. The way that female replicants (androids) are disposed of without a second thought when they don't measure up (whereas the male replicants at least have a fighting chance literally). There is a bit of a Handmaid's Tale vibe going on where women are sort of reduced to their reproductive status. (And yet children were not actually valued at all, given the frankly unbelievable number of orphans.) I will also agree that there are some ideas that work better than others, but the reveal about the Gosling character (K dash something) was actually pretty good. Still, the internal SF "world building" rules don't seem to make any kind of sense. Also I thought there were a few plot holes, particularly how LAPD of the future has apparently no meaningful internal security or even metal detectors in its building. I thought K, the Ryan Gosling character, 1) might have realized he was easily trackable (this is a neo-noir after all) and 2) would likely have had to give up his cool flying car (maybe this is better explained in the 4 hour cut). Also, why replicants need their own apartments (rather than living in a cubical at work for instance) and are paid actual money for their services is unclear (again see the odd "world building" rules). But I did enjoy it. I agree with Bill that the visuals worked well. I'm glad I saw it on the big screen before it vanished. This may be one of those films that has an audience that grows over time, just like the original film.
