What CAN'T You Find On The Internet?
ejp626 replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I think my mother-in-law has that exact console still. Just uses it as a sideboard now. -
Is this related to Esquire's All-American Hot Jazz Sessions? Same concerts? Or same general groupings but different recordings?

Thanks for the PMs. I think everything will be available but let me process in order. Few stragglers to list tonight, then I'm done. Whew!

Or you could say that Houston grossly overpaid for an average PG. I just think people like grousing. Lin has some skills but he is hardly the best or even fifth best player at his position. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect 20-7-6 for the season, and that's not too bad. If he does do those numbers, he can easily be traded in the third year. Perhaps, though I really think opposing teams will be able to "figure out" Lin and keep him from making such of an impact, and that was particularly true had he stayed with the Knicks (who strike me as fairly predictable when Carmelo is on the floor). Maybe it was a mistake, but certainly not the worst decision Dolan has ever made (the last 4 or 5 trades prior have a lot to do with why the Knicks would be in a luxury tax situation in the first place). I'm just saying, let's have some perspective.

It took a while, but Sony has waken up to the fact that Disc 1 had the wrong Eroica Symphony on it. They have started replacing them (rather than asking for the entire set back). So a happy ending (so long as they don't balk at sending to Canada -- I ordered through Amazon.co.uk). I believe the sets ordered through Amazon.com already have the corrected CD 1.

I got about five pages into that and decided maybe I should start with a few of his short stories as an introduction. After reading a few of his short stories, I feel I must apologize to any writers I have previously described as "overrated". I guess he can be a bit hit or miss, but I did enjoy The Yiddish Policemen's Union. Obviously, there are strong hints of PKD's The Man in the High Castle, but also a dash of Stefan Zweig's Chess Story. Anyway, I was clearing out old newspapers/reviews/etc. when I came across someone who was raving about I Could Ride All Day In My Cool Blue Train by Peter Hobbs. These are short stories by a UK writer. Took some doing, but I got it from the library. Not doing anything for me, though I guess I am only 1/3 in.

Slightly different but perhaps related, the little green box that says you have new PMs won't reset to 0 (and go away) even after checking my conversations thread and clearing them all out. I'm about to turn off PM notifications for a day or two and see what happens. -
Closing in on it now. Any interest in Eisner's A Contract with God (one of the earliest graphic novels)? Could be yours for $5 plus shipping. Anyway, as before a few newly listed and a bunch from past listings: HOLD 6 Grant Green His Majesty King Funk/Donarld Byrd Up (Verve) HOLD 4 Ron Carter Stardust (BN) light marks not affecting play HOLD 13 Bill Holman Band Brilliant Corners HOLD 1 Glenn Miller The Lost Recordings (RCA) 2 CD set HOLD 1 Glenn Miller The Secret Broadcasts (RCA) 3 CD set HOLD 5 McCoy Tyner-Louis Hayes Just Feelin' (Quicksilver) (see consolidated list on p. 2)

Last art exhibition you visited?
ejp626 replied to mikeweil's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I guess so. It's not that hard to become an amateur critic or an even more amateur collector -- just a subscription to Art in America and a few visits to local art galleries. It is true that I scheduled a work trip around the Max Beckmann exhibit at MoMA-Queens back in the day and am participating in a conference in Denver next month, primarily so I can check out the new Clyfford Still wing of the museum. I expect the Still to be much more up my alley (relative to the Twombley -- I loved the Beckmann exhibit). As far as Twombley, it isn't so much what he is thinking about now in our digital age, but what he was doing in his heyday in the late 60s and early 70s that defines him in my mind. Personally, I do find his chalkboard art paintings (this one is from 1970) to be deliberately provocative and, worse, uncompelling. Of course, he has the right to do what he wants, but in turn, it triggered a strong negative reaction in me and causes me to devalue him as an artist. -

Completely agree. Twombly's a total plonker. I don't know why museums keep pushing his stuff. He is one of a few contemporary artists I really hate -- him and Dan Flavin. Well the amount of young artists that work with flouro's suggest Flavin is a big influence on young contemporary artists. Although considering how fast the worm turns these days, maybe he is already a boring old fart. Twombley I have only seen in reproduction, but I usually enjoy the aestheticization of graffiti - so I like to ponder Twombley when I come across an article. One thing I remember reading about Twombley, was from the English visual art writer Matthew Collings. I think he was writing a few years ago about a Twombley retrospective. He said basically, that when Twombley gets it right, his paintings are truly great, but when they don't work - they really don't work. So there is no middle ground between his great work and aesthetic failure. I don't know about that, but I guess you could say the same thing about lots of painters that rely on grasping the gesture and chance. I would still like an opportunity to spend a few hours in a room full of Twombley's - to try and discover which ones were great and which ones weren't. Maybe I couldn't tell the difference anyway. I guess it would be harder to get a feel for that amongst Turner and Monet as well. It's obviously all about taste, but I can't imagine I would be impressed by any artist inspired by Flavin. I simply don't consider light emanating from tubes to be "art." Twombley rubs me the wrong way every single time. It's like he's intentionally rubbing it in the face of all the middle-brow heathens who say "but my kid could do that." But live by the sword, die by the sword; 99 times out of 100, I would consider a child's scribbles to be of more interest than Twombley's. -

I don't know the history: how many times he applied or expected to get asked and then gave up. I will say that if (some of) your headline acts are Rufus Wainwright and a disco act, you are on very thin ice to keep calling yourself a jazz festival. Still, it appears that Shorter played there, as well as Stefon Harris and Stanley Clarke. I feel the Vancouver Jazz Festival is getting a bit diluted, but the headliners were all pretty solid jazz acts: Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves, Bill Frissell and George Benson.

Ok, curious if anyone else has ordered and/or heard this one. It just arrived and I will listen this afternoon. Looking forward to it actually. In terms of packaging, I have something in a slightly wider slimline case with no back cover or liner tray. It does come with liner notes booklet. It looks legit -- shrinkwraped and with a gluestrip thing across the top. Just wondering if this is how it comes nowadays and if this is how DG is trying to keep costs a bit lower. Edit: It's actually quite a nice booklet with the complete libretto of Orango in Russian and English and some additional background info.

Pyramid hater! I don't know. Maybe he has a point: Don't think building these monuments did Jackie any good. -

Huh? If, at this point in her career, insuring the future of her family is an issue, she should be finding a good lawyer and suing her management. We're talking about someone who has been able to successfully bridge the chasm between jazz and popular music, who has released nearly a dozen well selling CD's and who plays to sold out houses where ever she goes. I hardly think money is an issue or a driving force behind her decision making. I'll double down on that assertion by virtue of the fact that she's married to Elvis Costello. You might be right. But that would be an assumption. Regardless, I certainly am not going to forego my right to complain about talented artists making commercial crap just because it feeds them and their families. They can do what they want, sure, but saying we can't carp about it? Absurd. You could justify practically everything anyone has ever done on those grounds.

I'm seeing a playlist of 26 movie trailers. hey Jim R. it's an embedded vid from youtube of the trailer for Marty. works ok for me. not sure what's up. if others also have trouble i'll delete. just wanted to share a taste of my favorite Borgnine film... Yeah, not working for me. I get Star Trek reboot, then Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Didn't stick with it long enough to see if Marty was in the queue or not...
