  1. I haven't found one online, but this book: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=glance&s=books called "Teddy Wilson Talks Jazz" has an excellent discography as an appendix.
  2. I have a stand alone cd burner (that accepts "data" blanks, rather than needing "music" blanks) and it's copying Brookmeyer just fine right now. I would assume I can rip this to my iPod, seeing that it will just be regular audio files now. Will report if this is not the case. Even with "consumer" stand alone models, this should work for single copies, I would image, at full quality. I guess everyone uses computer burners these days, but I got mine to burn cds of lps easily.
  3. Found a copy of the Artie Shaw: The Last Recordings (Vol.1 -- 2 cd set) at Half Price Books for all of $9.98. Was wondering what it goes for these days....don't see an Ebay, but, holy crap, there are 2 copies at Amazon Marketplace for $250 & $295!! Is that really the going rate?

    Audio DVD

Never thought about that. Hmm... burn dvds of Mahler symphonies??
  5. Sure, I know the source material issue, but I'm hearing other artifacts, something oddly out of phase and metallic in the highs that doesn't occur in mp3 encoding, for all the limitations of mp3....just trying to figure if it's from the transferring of the matieral, or something intrinsic to ogg encoding. Tried dropping one of the files into Nero for burning, but it doesn't recognize the file type. I guess there's probably another program or codec or something I don't have to do this.
  6. The notch filter is tough becuase the pitch of the whistle changes, especially if it's an off center pressing not quite compensated for, and this problem is most apparent at the ends of sides, where off centered effects are also the worst. Certainly a general roll off of the highs is no good......too much musicical info up there. I can live with the whistle, but then I've worked with 78s all my life.
  7. Looks like plenty of interest for those interested in the first decade or so of recorded jazz and near jazz. I downloaded the codec for Windows Media Player, and got it to work, but the audio seems more along the lines of streaming audio or Real Player than MP3 "quality" --- lots of "fizzy" highs and phase "swirliness". Is this typical for this format?? Is the point of this format to have something that can be played with relative ease on a computer, but not so easily "ripped" to MP3 or CDR? I guess if the quality is kind of dodgy, that would serve the same purpose for me, but just curious. Thanks for the link, in any case!

D'oh! Forgot about that! The email reply at the Frog site still has his name in the email address!

    Frog Records

I should explain.....I'm not at all claiming the disc I received to be an official Frog pressing (I DID receive Vol. 1 of the Miff Mole series, also an earlier release, in an actual pressed copy).... I think caiman.com either did the knockoff, or missed the fact that someone passed this off as legit who sold it to them. If anyone knows that Frog has actually done this kind of thing for releases that they have no stock from an earlier pressing run, that would be good to know. I have an email in to David French to see what he can tell me. In any case, I might have felt differently knowing in advance that I was buying a cdr... and passed on it.

Warning: I recently ordered Miff Mole volume 2- Slippin' Around - Again from Caiman.com through Amazon marketplace, and received a bloody CDR copy, complete with a photocopied and poorly cropped booklet!! Anyone else have a similar experience with this seller?
  11. As far as I'm concerned the same goes for many of those other European labels, like Definitive, JSP (with the exception of their early, J.R.T. Davies remastered sets), etc. ← Gotta disagree. Proper is by far the worst of these labels sonically. I don't endorse the thievery of any of them, but a number of the Definitive releases demonstrate that somebody with pretty good ears is behind their efforts. JSP has become a bit more hit and miss, but they are usually no WORSE than the competition on given titles......whereas Proper seems to find new ways to screw up the sonic qualities of all that they touch.
  12. Saw the FF set at a local Half Price Books for the same $100 that they charged (ME!!) for the Nat King Cole Trio set last year! Not really half price considering it's still in print, and the Tower deal. On top of that, it only contained the main booklet.... am I correct that there is a second booklet for this set??
  13. I don't see why they can't give access to jpegs of the covers and notes along with the download. I guess I'd rather hunt down the oop cds, but it's still nice to have the stuff available. I almost pulled the trigger on the (apparently) oop Red Norvo (Mingus, Farlow) Trio album, but found a used copy of the cd for $7 used with a bit of searching.
  14. Don't know about that one, but I remember SEEING Wilson on Billy Taylor's show on Bravo in the mid 80's not long before Wilson passed on, and I'd LOVE to see that again. What a beautiful man... his personal elegance and eloquence certainly mirrored his style at the piano. I DO hold a grudge to this day against Taylor, who suggested a tune that they might play as a duet (can't remember what), when Wilson seemed to balk slightly he said in a very condescending tone "oh, don't worry,we don't have to play it too fast"!
  15. One less J.J left now, finally just ordered it. I see that set was put out in '96. What's the longest lived Mosaic set??
  16. By the way, Amazon has the Moten "Band Box Shuffle" listed for $15.98 right now. Maybe the think it's a single disc?? Just ordered it!
  17. Same thing applies that I pointed out above, this stuff is apparently part of some incorrect database that these guys THINK is available from iTUNES.....when you go there by selecting a particular track it is NOT available, unless someone is able to see something I can't. It's probably based on some kind of CDDB database thing, and they're too lazy to seperate the real stuff from the bogus.
  18. When you click on the tracks from the set, you go to the iTunes store, but only get a list of OTHER Art Hodes tracks that may be purchased.
  19. I picked this up, based on one positive comment about the remastering on another forum, but I must say I'm not terribly impressed. It's not particularly better or worse than the Okeh collection from Sony on those tracks....just a bit different w/ the eq. Does NOT sound like they did their own transfer work (a sad trend from JSP....it's still worth watching for a few of the older J. R. T. Davies transfers to get the cheap box treatment, but be wary...). It's not a retread of the nasty German History transfers (no high end, fake stereo) at least, so the completist (assuming further volumes are forthcoming) could do worse, I suppose. I wonder if they will rip off transfers from the RCA Centennial collection?
  20. Listened to the samples on the Mosaic web site, was enjoying the first two quite a bit, and then The House Of Blue Lights started with that damned "tacks on the hammers" trick that Capitol pulled a few times in the 40s; a most hideous sound!.....I'm hoping it's just for that one session?? Anyone know the extent of the damage?
  21. A local used emporium has the (cd vers.) of The Stan Kenton Complete Capitol Recordings of the Holman and Russo Charts. It's $100, so I'm not quite sure I'm going to pull the plug. What's Ebay been yielding on this? Should I go for it?
  22. Oh well, sorry to all. Don't know why it came out so nastily, didn't really understand what was being done or not done to the thread, went away for the weekend and....eek! Was a very bad hair day!
  23. Wow, you're a genuine idiot! Read the topic, moron, and go troll somewhere else! Meanwhile, anyone have the latest numbers on copies left of J. J. Johnson??
  24. I'm a bit confused, because there are 2 JSP sets (well, 3 with the '49 Rome stuff now), and 2/3rds of that first one's contents are not contained in the Mosaic at all, so I don't think you would want to trade that one away, especially because the transfer work is exemplary on the non-Mosaic issued material. But, as far as I can tell, JSP has "borrowed" the Mosaic transfers of the rest (and the entire 2nd set, rendering that one useless) -- whether it has resulted in a degraded version of the Mosaic transfers, I don't know (haven't done and a/b for quite a while) -- but to me they are clearly derived from the same sources, and not legally so (in JSPs case, as has sadly become common with them). Are you comparing the tracks that are in common between JSP V. 1 (near the end of the set) and the Mosaic? The earlier stuff in the JSP WILL sound different because it's from very different recordings and pressings (and not the masters that Mosaic had to utilize).
