  1. It's just the studio albums. Now, the DVD of SMS has a couple of 5.1 mixes, a studio one and a "film soundtrack" one, whatever that means. So, I guess that's one of the reasons why the SMS CD isn't part of this reissue campaign. And not ONE of those mixes on the DVD sounds right! I found I kept switching back and forth......some cuts were better with one or the other, but the old VHS sounds about as good or better........ Anyone have any luck playing the high-rez portion of these reissues on any of the Pionner multi-format players (563A or 588?). I've heard there are problems with Dual discs, thus haven't tried any of them as of yet.
  2. I used to have handy the original track order of the Giuffre albums, but can't seem to find it. This is certainly one instance where Mosaic really should have given us the original track orders --- it makes a complete mess of Giuffre's careful sequencing! Anyone have this in a handy form?
  3. By the way, if anyone wants to read the transcripts without buying the set, try this link: http://publicity.rounder.com/ scroll down to Jelly Roll Morton, and you can access the PDF file that is on disc 8 of the set.
  4. I agree that the sound "restoration" on the new set leaves MUCH to be desired, however I hear 95% of the same basic approach on the previous 4 cd Rounders. And on those issues, there's not really more in the high frequency department, but what IS there is afflicted with a peculiar spikey distortion that I find more annoying than what comes out of the new set. Bottom line, for me both sound compromised, so there's no particular reason to stay away from the new set in deference to the old cds. I'm curious to hear some of the Lp issues. Were these originally recorded on glass-based acetate masters? If so, coupled with the oddly distant mic placement, could account for some of what we hear or don't hear as far as surface noise and/or high frequencies.
  5. Does anyone know whether the Pioneer DV 588 plays Dual Discs or not? I seem to hear that it has trouble, which seems odd, given the whole firmware problem with the DV 563a regarding DVD-Audio (it had to be sent back in order for them to play correctly, after the firmware was updated). Thanks.
  6. Talking of tunes that one can't shake, all I have to do is think "Night Gallery" to hear Melle's creepy electronic music for the opening credits! Apparently, it was the first all electronic tv theme. You can hear it here: http://www.nightgallery.net hit episode guide, and then "next" to get past the pilot episode screen. The first version is not so familiar...he overdubbed all the parts himself on this one.

    Jazz DVDs

Well, I'm not sure what less culpability "the dubious folks at disconforme" have regarding the FIRST set you show. I have it too, with the label "Idem" in larger print, and then in very small print: "distributed by Disconforme"!! I'd still say it's worth picking up, but someday we need a legit, quality release of "The Sound of Jazz". This is ok, but it's not it. Granted, it's WAY better than the awful MVD version of the show, which is missing Monk's contribution, and looks and sounds like crap. However, "Jammin' the Blues" is not even close to the quality of the version Turner Classic Movies shows sometimes. I'd recommend the various "Jazz Scene USA" dvds and the "Jazz Casual" series, but I wish they would issue more! Can anyone chime in on the "Jazz Casual" dvds sold by True Blue? They have a number of titles not available through normal channels. Amazon z shops seems to have a few also, and they seem to be PAL one side, NTSC other side. Are these legit??
  8. There are two equally sized boxes that slide into the large slipcase. The first has the booklet and the 1st two cds in single cases. The 2nd box contains the rest in 4 double sized cases with 4 cds in each. Good luck finding the rest!
  9. I don't want it to sound like it was recorded yesterday, I don't want to hear Duke's galoshes, I just want something that sounds just a BIT like the original bloody recordings, which sound quite good when they haven't been sonically raped, rather than the Ellington Orchestra recorded under water! Unfortunately for every J.R.T. Davies quality transfer, there are gobs of these European rip-offs, that take someone else's already questionable work, and further "improve" it. You're right, for the money, you DO get to plug plenty of gaps in the discography, and I DO own the thing, and don't plan on selling it. But, I'm afraid that the color and sonority that are SO important to Ellington's effect are absolutely squashed. And for all the warts, the current Blanton-Webster set from BMG DOES supply this (yes, they DID use some crappy source material for a number of the sides), just to give one example. I also have some of the 80's French RCA LPs (the double lp "Black and White" series ones), and these are a bit overfiltered, but nothing compared to this set's "no highs allowed" philosophy. You certainly have a right to your opinion. Obviously one man's tolerable is another's unlistenable. I wish I COULD enjoy this set. A better example of this kind of value, IMHO, is the recent German Membran Artie Shaw set (the 10 cd Begin the Beguine one). It is probably a rip-off of the French Classic label transfers (of which I am NOT a fan, and they're expensive!!), but with less ruinous a sonic hand involved. These are STILL not very good transfers (try the BMG set that Shaw picked the repertory for comparison), but for around $15, go ahead, make my day an Artie Shaw day.
  10. I've got to say that this thing does sound absolutely horrid!! Makes Proper Boxes sound like an SACD. NO highs, NO bass, just a gummy middle range that no amount of eq adjustment can rescue. I got it as a cheap way of filling in gaps in my collection.....but what good is it if I have no desire or ability to actually listen to the thing. Wish I had saved the $50 and put it towards the RCA box when it was around. By the way, the recent JSP box purporting to begin an Ellington series is nothing to write home about remastering wise either...although it's certainly better than this German piece of crap!
  11. Ah, so you got it! I saw that a couple of weeks ago. Almost nabbed it. I also found the Mosaic Nat King Cole set there for $90 last year!
  12. So, if one merely inserts on of these cds in one's computer (as opposed to installing the program designed to make it playable in a computer) this stuff is STILL installed? I'm not quite clear on that point. Pardon my density!
  13. What's further than the World Series? Is there an interplantary one now? Can you tell I'm an Astros fan?
  14. Well, technically, for arguing balls and strikes he doesn't need to be in your face... I can't count the times Larry Bowa was tossed while in the dugout, and then came out to get his money's worth... but sheesh, a game of that importance, let the freakin' players decide the thing, that's what people pay their money for, not the stinking umpire's bruised ego on display. Edmonds getting chucked was just because the ump was already pissed at La Russa. Still.....I think the Astros deserved to win with those great defensive plays in the 9th to make Lidge look better than he was this time!
  15. Bye bye Cardinals. Hello world series for the Astros. Having grown up near Philly watching the (mostly) phlailing Phils, I'm glad to see the even longer suffering Houston guys (my home for 15 years now) get closer to a chance at the big kahuna! Seeing them k/o the Braves 2 years in a row was sweet enough, seeing the Braves beat up on the Phils in that division every year.... it's a bit harder to dislike the Cards w/o Scott Rolen playing (being a jilted Philly fan, you know). Sure was scary seeing Sanders hit the warning track with his head like that! Seriously though, what was up with La Russa today??
  16. Seems like San Antonio gets better big name jazz than any other Texas city. Just this year or so I've seen, Herbie, Wayne, James Moody, Wynton & LCO, Joey Defrancesco and others in SA. I'll post if I see anything else come up. ← Wayne is also playing in Houston next month (October 14): http://www.dacamera.com/artist3.html Dave ← Damn and double damn! Here in Houston and I'm playing my own concert tonight and can't go! Hey, you must be David Garrett from the Mobius forum? Hi!
  17. If you happen to have a stand alone cd burner, make a copy of the original to a cdr or cdrw, then that cd will be able to be ripped. The correct track info even shows up for me.
  18. That's odd, on my Windows XP setup, the "explore" feature only seems to find the audio tracks, no PDF file at all, and nothing extra shows up on my desktop. I'll have to try the Mac at work, I guess.
  19. What a package! My initial impressions of the sound, and a very quick spot check with the previous Rounder cds, I still get the nagging sense that there's some high end shaved off, but I've never heard anything from the various issues prior to the 10 year old Rounder series. However, without filtering out MORE than the previous cds, they do avoid the nasty "blasting" effect that suddenly spikes certain sibilants in those older cds. In any case, the completeness and annotations make it a must for the Morton enthusiast. One question. Has anyone been able to access the promised PDF file on disc 8?? Can't find it by "exporing" on my XP setup. Hope I figure it out, because that sounds like a great feature.

    iPod nano

I agree about the ease of using the Archos models mentioned above. With the ability to simply drop folders with albums AND any other files you might want to port around, it's a far simpler and more expedient solution. The reports of the screen problems are music to MY ears: I no longer need to envy those who spend the bucks on this Nano nano toy. At the time I bought the Archos, the reason was the $100 I saved for a 20GB model over iPod.....apparently it was REALLY money well saved!
  21. Are you saying you would have stayed at the Chicken Ranch, if it were still doing business??!! Anyhow, this weekend the residents were more interested in picking grocery store shelves clean, and queing up for a tank of gas. Sad I couldn't make it as far as Austin to see some of the ACL festival, but I was lucky to have a place to stay closer to Houston before my gas ran out!
  22. Left Houston for Austin early Thursday morning. Thought I had the back roads and alternates picked out to avoid what I saw on the tube. WRONG! Ended up stopping at an alternate place to stay well short of Austin (La Grange -- about 100 miles out-- turned out to be quite far enough, with nary a drop of rain), and only managed to make it there after 11 hours and most of my tank of gas. From the sounds of it, I made out way better than the average. Am I sorry I did it? Hell no, that thing could have made mincemeat out of us, and I can only imagine the exodus from Houston if it only became obvious it would hit US as late as the poor folk of Beaumont/Port Arthur and points east realized that horrible fact. THAT would have been the ultimate mess, and it could happen next week.....maybe I should keep my "desert island" cd/book collection in boxes just in case! Sort of like carrying an umbrella to ward off rain.......
  23. It has the same (1996) Publisher's note at the head, and that's the newest date on anything besides the printing date, so I would say yes, it's the same (same # of pages according to Amazon too)
  24. I have the paperback edition, which as you say,is the later version, but I don't know if there are any changes. Looks like some good prices on it in the marketplace section.
