  2. I don't know, maybe one has to "buy in" to Twitter to find that funny? http://petercherches.blogspot.com/2008/11/im-so-2006-or-blogs-are-bad-enough-but.html

  4. When I took a jazz history course with Chuck Israels in 1974, he made a big thing of how Rollins and Thad Jones, as melodic-leaning improvisors, were much more attuned to Monk's music, as they really got inside the tunes, as opposed to someone like Charlie Rouse, who pretty much blew on the changes. Same can be said of Steve Lacy's approach to Monk.

  6. I agree with some of the Amazon reviewers: if you had to start with one Sun Ra album it would be Live at Montreux: http://www.amazon.com/Live-Montreux-Sun-His-Arkestra/dp/B00008YJFS I saw the Arkestra a number of times in this period, including at the final incarnation of the Five Spot. The first Sun Ra album I heard, as a teenager, was Heliocentric Sounds. I couldn't handle it.
  7. Yes, in fact maybe he's not "insisting" on anything. Some of the origins of the Brooklyn accent seem apparent when my Russian friend Igor talks about his dawta. I have trouble with people who say "bahl" when it's obviously supposed to be pronounced "bawl."

  11. There's a song on Dylan's Love & Theft, Bye & Bye, whose melody is pretty much the same as a song Billie Holiday did, Having Myself a Time. www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUN636BNNys http://www.bobdylan.com/us/songs/bye-and-bye

I agree; as well, a number of older drummers who made their name in "out" contexts have also proven themselves to be equally fine inside players, e.g. Cyrille, Rashied Ali, Barry Altschul among others. "Drum kit" normally refers to a standard trap drum setup. I think drum machine or electronic percussion is what you're talking about. My only really major peeve about drummers is when they bow a cymbal producing an excruciating sound that I just don't get. Just because you "can" do something doesn't mean you "should" do it.
  24. I was about to post the same info in a more clumsy way. Using a different fluid?
  25. Google book link See last paragraph of 2nd column, page 438 It also mentions that there were rumors about Tony Williams, but I do know that he was living for a while with Linda Sharrock on 3rd Ave. & 14th Street, and my friend in their building described them as a couple.
