  1. I agree with some of the Amazon reviewers: if you had to start with one Sun Ra album it would be Live at Montreux: http://www.amazon.com/Live-Montreux-Sun-His-Arkestra/dp/B00008YJFS I saw the Arkestra a number of times in this period, including at the final incarnation of the Five Spot. The first Sun Ra album I heard, as a teenager, was Heliocentric Sounds. I couldn't handle it.
  2. Yes, in fact maybe he's not "insisting" on anything. Some of the origins of the Brooklyn accent seem apparent when my Russian friend Igor talks about his dawta. I have trouble with people who say "bahl" when it's obviously supposed to be pronounced "bawl."

  6. There's a song on Dylan's Love & Theft, Bye & Bye, whose melody is pretty much the same as a song Billie Holiday did, Having Myself a Time. www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUN636BNNys http://www.bobdylan.com/us/songs/bye-and-bye

  11. Looks like they may be doing them chronologically, so maybe next would be Fall '69 or Fall '71, then '73...

  13. I just got it to work, but I have no idea what I did differently.
  14. I keep getting an invalid username/password error. Does anybody post from Android devices? Any ideas on how to solve the problem?

I agree; as well, a number of older drummers who made their name in "out" contexts have also proven themselves to be equally fine inside players, e.g. Cyrille, Rashied Ali, Barry Altschul among others. "Drum kit" normally refers to a standard trap drum setup. I think drum machine or electronic percussion is what you're talking about. My only really major peeve about drummers is when they bow a cymbal producing an excruciating sound that I just don't get. Just because you "can" do something doesn't mean you "should" do it.
  19. I was about to post the same info in a more clumsy way. Using a different fluid?
  20. Google book link See last paragraph of 2nd column, page 438 It also mentions that there were rumors about Tony Williams, but I do know that he was living for a while with Linda Sharrock on 3rd Ave. & 14th Street, and my friend in their building described them as a couple.

  23. I remember, years ago, during a Charlie Parker birthday broadcast on WKCR, the announcer said "Begin the Begwine." Then I heard Phil Schaap's voice yelling from the background, "Begeen, you idiot!"
  24. I can't speak for Mr. Jones/Baraka, but I can guess that he felt that Wayne Shorter went only so far and decided to refine his playing style as it was, rather than searching for new avenues of music, as Trane and others did. Maybe if he had heard Wayne's playing at The Plugged Nickel he might have felt differently.
  25. I've actually never heard that. People here usually say "Spain"! Once in Sevilla, though, I asked an old guy where I could find the bus to Cadiz, but since I learned Spanish from Latinos in NY, I said "Cadeece." He was baffled, and finally said, "Ah, Cadeethe!" I can assure you, however, that Americans are perfectly able to say, "Nyah, nyah, nyah."
