  1. I don't believe Seth ever found anything, and he's long gone from Legacy.
  2. Yes. However, I will grant that a case can be made for Pickin's based on the premise that the apostrophe represents the missing g in the singular. But as an editor I'd still change it.
  3. Stay away from the dreadful film adaptation, "The Reckoning." Another dud of a film was Merchant-Ivory's version of Pascali's Island.
  4. Yes, but that does not make it proper. ... Please, everybody stop the bullshit. Wow, not only a "fundamentalist," but an angry one... Language does not evolve by central planning. It's a chaotic process in which many variations come and go in casual usage, and some stick and become codified. I think you have a problem with chaos. Or maybe you have French blood.
  5. It is an abbreviation. Are you a barrister?
  6. There's a coffee roaster called Has Beans. Noah Webster.
  7. One of my favorite contemporary fiction writers. I think I've read about 3/4 of his books. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/08/books/barry-unsworth-historical-novelist-dies-at-81.html
  8. As far as I know this is a first. http://jazztimes.com/articles/27324-sista-s-place-a-jazz-cultural-beachhead-in-brooklyn-part-one
  9. Well, that's better than "her majesty's a pretty nice girl but she doesn't have a lot to say."
  10. No, the apostrophe would only be acceptable for an abbreviation or acronym in all caps where the lack might cause confusion. Pickins should never be Pickin's unless it's a possessive for Mr. Pickin. Getting matters of orthographic style right is hit or miss in any country in my experience.
  11. Would you say that American English is a big error? No comments from our U.K. friends, please.
  12. One rumor is that Coltrane was nodding out, Monk called his name, and he sprung to consciousness and played a great solo, but I've also seen this account questioned.

  17. As a proofreader I have to correct things like 60's to '60s all the time. http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/george-w-bush-favorable-rating-lowest-living-president-100010623.html My policy is to allow an apostrophe if the style is all caps but lower case s w/o apostrophe if mixed case. So: DVD'S or DVDs, but not DVD's.
  18. Yeah, that's Chandler's deepest, most emotionally complex novel. The classics that precede it are great, but he ups the ante here. He lost his wife and essentially his career shortly after it was published. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond_Chandler Upon which all have now been built. Not.
