  2. I see an alternate take on a set called America's #1 Band, and the original take on an album called Count Basie, The Early Years, but they sound the same to me. Putative original take: Putative alternate take:

  7. Actually, it's Abednego, but when I was a mainframe programmer a colleague used Abendego as his password. An "abend" is a program crash (from abnormal end). Brook Benton Our Miss Brooks B. Frank

  9. Thumbs up to both of those. Maybe John Handy's 2nd-4th Columbia albums are neglected compared to Live at Monterey.

  13. If you're going to make only one recording, being billed as legendary is a good idea. I like the album very much.

  16. Cleaver's Uncle June is a great band. I saw them a few years back. The biggest problem will be choosing which stage to go to at any particular time, but I've managed with 14 concurrent stages at the North Sea festival.
  17. Kevin, if you're serious, the Greektown Casino Hotel has a rate of $145 on a number of travel sites (I booked through Expedia; the hotel's own site has higher rates). It's highly rated on Tripadvisor and is a short walk from the festival stages. You're closer to the Detroit Jazz Festival than I am to the Umbria Jazz Festival, fwiw...

  19. Apparently Dylan Thomas used to go into the White Horse Tavern in Greenwich Village and order a "sandwich" which for him was a shot between two slices of beer.

  21. I once took a day trip to Bath (in the '90s, I believe) during the May bank holiday with a friend who was teaching a London sememster for his California college. It turns out it was the time of the Bath Festival, and we wandered into some tent or shed and caught Julian Joseph's sound check/rehearsal. He had a great tenor player, but I didn't catch his name. The UK Festival I'd love to get to this year (but can't) is Back2Black in London. http://www.barbican.org.uk/music/event-detail.asp?ID=13328 My last time in London was June of '09 for Ornette's Meltdown.

  25. And I believe he'll be playing with Rick Margitza, who was his student. It's definitely the most high-profile list I've seen in the U.S., especially considering it's a free event.
