Warren Finnerty in The Connection reminds me so much of Steve Buscemi in his mannerisms. I studied playwriting with Jack Gelber in college. By that time ('70s) he was doing more directing than writing. Though he did do a handful of plays after The Connection, he was basically a one-hit wonder as a writer. I liked Jack very much. He died very suddenly, which I guess is good, no suffering. He had a brain aneurysm or something like that after he got home from teaching a directing class at Ensemble Studio Theatre and just went.

Non-jazz artists you're finally catching on to

I'm aware, and I agree. If you don't know me by now... -
So, for the longest time I wasn't interested in any of the "smoother" forms of '70s and '80s soul music, but some years ago The Spinners and Stylistics broke through, and only very recently have I realized what an amazing singer Teddy Pendergrass was. I don't love the music all the time, but that voice...

I assume Lara did an interview with Abbey, not Ran? (assumption because female vocalists are her real specialty) -
What live music are you going to see tonight?

He was great, and yes, he's getting a lot of attention. -
This is not joke, though you might mistake it for an Onion headline. Oops, it's not a cad, it's a cadaver. Either I didn't highlight enough or it was too long for the subject line. http://blogs.browardpalmbeach.com/pulp/2012/04/g-spot_discovered.php However, there's already controversy: http://blogs.browardpalmbeach.com/pulp/2012/04/scientists_insist_that_polish.php

I saw this excellent Hal Wilner-produced tribute at Celebrate Brooklyn in 2007: Hal Willner's Doc Pomus Project Featuring Lou Reed / Ben E. King / Howard Tate / Teddy Thompson / Shannon McNally / Steven Bernstein / Robin Holcomb / Joel Dorn / Mocean Worker / Peter Guralnick and many others Maverick music producer HAL WILLNER, whose off kilter genius for dreaming up multi-artist concept shows is unparalleled, returns to the Bandshell after epic explorations of Leonard Cohen (2003) and Neil Young (2004) to celebrate the words and music of the late great Williamsburg born songwriter DOC POMUS, author of classics like "Lonely Avenue" and "Youngblood." Willner's eclectic crowd of artists will range, as always, from the emerging to the iconic. Check our Website for cast updates. That was the scheduled lineup, and more artists were added. This blog post tells all: http://blatherfrombrooklyn.wordpress.com/2007/07/21/the-doc-pomus-project/

If I were starting a Canterbury band I'd call it Archbishop. Either that or Archie and the Bishops. I had no idea Richard Thompson ever recorded with Kaiser & Frith. I'm not familiar with French. What does that animal sound like (the album, not French)?

Hardly. Since more people like what he doesn't do best, they're the one's who'll have to ignore him, but they'll only ignore him if he does what he does best... -
What live music are you going to see tonight?

Thursday through today at the Festival Internationale de Louisiane in Lafayette: Sonny Landreth, Bombino (Touareg from Niger, "desert blues" a la Tinariwen & Tartit), Robert Randolph Family Band, Khaira Arby (Northern Mali--she's related to Ali Farka Toure), Cheikh Lo, Lindigo (Reunion Island--disappointing; nothing like Rene Lacaille, who recorded with Bob Brozman), Pine Leaf Boys, Gary Clark Jr., Red Stick Ramblers, Debo Band ("Ethiopiques" from Boston), Vishten (P.E.I.), Lost Bayou Ramblers, Corey Ledet & his Zydeco Band, Destination Gospel Choir, Savoy Family Cajun Band, Feufollet, Leroy Thomas & the Zydeco Roadrunners, Canailles (Quebec). And there was so much tempting stuff I had to miss. I passed on Seun Kuti, Texas Tornadoes, Chico Trujillo (Chile) and Slavic Soul Party since I've seen them all in Brooklyn, and I wanted to catch acts I haven't seen before, though I have previously seen Cheikh Lo, Robert Randolph and Sonny Landreth. -

Ray Davies: Other People's Lives and (especially) Working Man's Cafe. I sort of like his Kinks Choral Collection but I haven't heard his opportunistic new album with younger rockers, but his brother Dave is on record saying that Ray has become a karaoke act Levon Helm: Dirt Farmer & Electric Dirt Van Morrison: A number of his albums of the last 10-15 years. All depends on what you call late career. Was On the Corner late or mid-career Miles? Shorter's quartet albums of the past 10 years are pretty vital as far as I'm concerned. -

I think we should let her speak for herself. Somehow I have a feeling her intellect and emotions are more nuanced than you give her credit for... By the way Allen, just so this back and forth isn't mistaken for animosity, I suspect I'd like you if we met, and I love your music, which gives you one up on the late Brookmeyer. I did like his music... -

Even if Walter Bishop, Jr. deserved millions, it ain't Herbie's millions. Completely different career trajectories. You're either a dreamer or a nut job. -

Was that before or after Lundvall recorded and relased an Albany album on Elektra, and what were you expecting him to do? -

Well, Allen set us straight: Lundvall isn't Jesus. Who the hell gave him the right not to be Jesus?
