I did go to Havana in December 2000. We might have met in NYC as well, but when would that have been? I've been on this board since the start pretty much. I remember you mentioning Havana on Jazz Corner, around the same time I went (I went spring of either '99 or 2000). I met a different Adam (aka Achilles).

Adam, are you the L.A. Adam I met in NY, or the L.A. Adam who went to Havana, or another Adam altogether?
  5. This is a beautiful album: I was in Stockholm for a weekend some years ago and I did see Swedish folk music at a jazz club: Frifot at Fasching.
  6. Run, don't walk to your local online retailer and order this DVD: I don't love his music, but have you seen the wonderful documentary about him? I was amazed to learn that his two biggest hits were not his own songs: Everybody's Talkin' (Fred Neil), Without You (Badfinger). Probably better than this guy's versions:
  7. She definitely has that bronzed look. Maybe she can pay for her treatments by standing still in the park.

Excellent book. I got it a couple of years ago at a similarly low price.

  11. Warren Finnerty in The Connection reminds me so much of Steve Buscemi in his mannerisms. I studied playwriting with Jack Gelber in college. By that time ('70s) he was doing more directing than writing. Though he did do a handful of plays after The Connection, he was basically a one-hit wonder as a writer. I liked Jack very much. He died very suddenly, which I guess is good, no suffering. He had a brain aneurysm or something like that after he got home from teaching a directing class at Ensemble Studio Theatre and just went.

  13. So, for the longest time I wasn't interested in any of the "smoother" forms of '70s and '80s soul music, but some years ago The Spinners and Stylistics broke through, and only very recently have I realized what an amazing singer Teddy Pendergrass was. I don't love the music all the time, but that voice...

  17. This is not joke, though you might mistake it for an Onion headline. Oops, it's not a cad, it's a cadaver. Either I didn't highlight enough or it was too long for the subject line. http://blogs.browardpalmbeach.com/pulp/2012/04/g-spot_discovered.php However, there's already controversy: http://blogs.browardpalmbeach.com/pulp/2012/04/scientists_insist_that_polish.php

    Doc Pomus

I saw this excellent Hal Wilner-produced tribute at Celebrate Brooklyn in 2007: Hal Willner's Doc Pomus Project Featuring Lou Reed / Ben E. King / Howard Tate / Teddy Thompson / Shannon McNally / Steven Bernstein / Robin Holcomb / Joel Dorn / Mocean Worker / Peter Guralnick and many others Maverick music producer HAL WILLNER, whose off kilter genius for dreaming up multi-artist concept shows is unparalleled, returns to the Bandshell after epic explorations of Leonard Cohen (2003) and Neil Young (2004) to celebrate the words and music of the late great Williamsburg born songwriter DOC POMUS, author of classics like "Lonely Avenue" and "Youngblood." Willner's eclectic crowd of artists will range, as always, from the emerging to the iconic. Check our Website for cast updates. That was the scheduled lineup, and more artists were added. This blog post tells all: http://blatherfrombrooklyn.wordpress.com/2007/07/21/the-doc-pomus-project/
