  4. He's no J.D., but I really love what I've heard from the Fall 1971 European tour (Ndugu-Mtume-Alias are a great percussion section), and hope that's the basis of a box in the bootleg series to come.
  5. As an arranger, Paul Jeffrey used very idiosyncratic voicings, but I don't know how best to describe what he was doing. Can anybody explain? The easiest examples to find are his work for Mingus--the last Atlantic albums as well as the session for Lionel Hampton's Who's Who series (and this one most has the sound I remember from seeing Jeffrey's Octet live).
  6. I love the Cellar Door recordings, but McLaughlin's night was definitely the best, and they made a wise choice choosing from that material for the original album.
  7. I just discovered that the CD, which I don't have, has 2 additional tracks, Pullen's Big Alice, and a tune called The Call, both of which feature trumpet solos. I wonder if trumpet solos were edited out of other tunes. Big Alice was performed in the first set at Carnegie Hall in 1974, but only the jam session was released by Atlantic.

  9. From Wikipedia: Fred Lipsius left and was replaced by jazz legend Joe Henderson (who did not stay long enough to record), before Lou Marini settled into the new lineup

  12. Weren't there some studio recordings of the orchestra on Savoy, albeit without the biggest "superstars"?. There's also the soundtrack for the film Rhythm in a Riff. You can find clips on YouTube. Here's a very thorough description of the film and its production: http://www.jazz-on-film.com/eckstine.htm

  14. The highlight of the Dizzy at Wolf Trap show was the quintet with Dizzy, Sonny Rollins & Hank Jones. I think Mickey Roker was on drums. Can't remember the bass. Actually, the announcement came courtesy of one of our friends on these boards, Ghost of... http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/sam-rivers-mosaic-set-november/ and at the time there was a thread here: It's possible that it was all due to a misapprehension, and it was the Rivbea Orchestra all along.

  17. I know about that one. I was talking about tapes from the '70s, recorded at Studio Rivbea in NYC.
  18. Yes, it was LaFaro's last gig, July 4, 1961, 2 days before he died. Found this on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqXtTmMKXqI There are also videos of this program: Richie Kamuca Quintet, Los Angeles: KABC studios, 7 April 1958. Stars of Jazz (1956-1958) Program #14). Richie Kamuca, tenor saxophone and leader Frank Rosolino, trombone Scott LaFaro, bass Victor Feldman, piano Stan Levey, drums

  20. I seem to remember reading reports that Montgomery didn't really fit in--either third party reflections or Wes himself.
  21. I saw this excellent lineup in Montreal in '09. Rudresh was fantastic. Miles from India Darryl Jones of the Rolling Stones and Selvaganesh of Remember Shakti add their talents. Miles goes Indian… or vice-versa? The Festival presents another concert homage to the legend, this time with a major musical project spiced with a delicious touch of exoticism. Inspired by the double album of the same name, Miles from India is a musical fusion of Indian and American cultures. Two groups, one composed of elite Indian musicians, the other of American jazzmen who’ve previously collaborated with Miles, unite onstage for a Subcontinental, spiritual celebration of the master’s music. A remarkable project in its exclusive Canadian presentation! Nicholas Payton • Trumpet Robert Irving III • Keyboards Bill Evans • Tenor Saxophone R. Mahanthappa • Saxophones Darry Jones • Bass John Beasley • Keyboards Badal Roy • Tabla U. Shrinivas • Mandolin Lenny White • Drums Ndugu Chancler • Percussions Vince Wilburn • Drums Anantha Krishnan • Mridangan Hidayat Khan • Sitar V.K. Raman • Flute/Vocal Selvaganesh • Khanjira

  23. One of Sam's daughters was very involved with his career, and I suspect she'll want to keep the legacy going. Wasn't there talk at one time of a Mosaic box of tapes from Studio Rivbea?
  24. Braxton a control freak? It boggles the mind.
  25. Sam was in Dizzy's band at Dizzy's 70th birthday concert at Wolf Trap, which was broadcast on PBS.
