  2. I know about that one. I was talking about tapes from the '70s, recorded at Studio Rivbea in NYC.
  3. Yes, it was LaFaro's last gig, July 4, 1961, 2 days before he died. Found this on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqXtTmMKXqI There are also videos of this program: Richie Kamuca Quintet, Los Angeles: KABC studios, 7 April 1958. Stars of Jazz (1956-1958) Program #14). Richie Kamuca, tenor saxophone and leader Frank Rosolino, trombone Scott LaFaro, bass Victor Feldman, piano Stan Levey, drums

  5. I seem to remember reading reports that Montgomery didn't really fit in--either third party reflections or Wes himself.
  6. I saw this excellent lineup in Montreal in '09. Rudresh was fantastic. Miles from India Darryl Jones of the Rolling Stones and Selvaganesh of Remember Shakti add their talents. Miles goes Indian… or vice-versa? The Festival presents another concert homage to the legend, this time with a major musical project spiced with a delicious touch of exoticism. Inspired by the double album of the same name, Miles from India is a musical fusion of Indian and American cultures. Two groups, one composed of elite Indian musicians, the other of American jazzmen who’ve previously collaborated with Miles, unite onstage for a Subcontinental, spiritual celebration of the master’s music. A remarkable project in its exclusive Canadian presentation! Nicholas Payton • Trumpet Robert Irving III • Keyboards Bill Evans • Tenor Saxophone R. Mahanthappa • Saxophones Darry Jones • Bass John Beasley • Keyboards Badal Roy • Tabla U. Shrinivas • Mandolin Lenny White • Drums Ndugu Chancler • Percussions Vince Wilburn • Drums Anantha Krishnan • Mridangan Hidayat Khan • Sitar V.K. Raman • Flute/Vocal Selvaganesh • Khanjira

  8. One of Sam's daughters was very involved with his career, and I suspect she'll want to keep the legacy going. Wasn't there talk at one time of a Mosaic box of tapes from Studio Rivbea?
  9. Braxton a control freak? It boggles the mind.
  10. Sam was in Dizzy's band at Dizzy's 70th birthday concert at Wolf Trap, which was broadcast on PBS.
  11. Unless you can give examples of these "schmoes," and subject your drive-by condemnations to review by the board, you've merely set up a straw man, which does no favor to Sam Rivers. As your post stands now, it's at the rhetorical level of most political discourse in America (which, btw, is not a good thing).
  12. You must admit he coaxed the blues right out of the horn.

  17. Yeah, Trane knew all along that he wanted Tyner for his own group, but at first Tyner had commitments with the Jazztet.
  18. Wow, I never knew that. I think Miles also had a group with J.J. as second horn, maybe while Trane was with Monk. I'd be interested in how Bill Evans sounded with George Mraz.

    Shazam app.

I think Shazam will only match a specific recording, and I've seen it in action and it works. But I think what you want is Soundhound, which claims to be the only app that identifies songs you sing or hum: http://www.soundhound.com/
  21. I had forgotten that she went 20 years between recordings. I discovered her through Whitney Balliet's book, and when I told her that she couldn't say enough about how important that book was to her career. The funny thing is, my friend knew her for some years before Barbara told her she was a singer!

  23. I'm sure there are plenty of undocumented aggregations we'd love to have an album by, and I'm interested in what others think. One I'd love to have heard is the Stan Getz quartet with Steve Kuhn, Scott LaFaro and Roy Haynes. I've only heard one poor quality location recording, I think from Newport. I don't know how long it lasted, but I'd be curious how Miles sounded with Coleman, Strozier & Mabern. I'd also be interested in how Stubblefield sounded with Mingus--is there anything out there?
  24. I've been hoping for a DVD release, but so far no go. Have you seen the film? It's really fabulous. I was lucky to catch it at Anthology Film Archives, in NY, and the filmmaker did a Q&A.
