Organissimo Takes Manhattan....
J Larsen replied to catesta's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'll try to make it (work permitting), but I'll be at least an hour late. Hope to see you there, if not have fun. -
Has anyone had problems with their customer service? I let them know that I only received one item from my order about a week ago, and got this message: Hello, Thank you for inquiring about your yourmusic.com order number XXXXXXXXXXX. In some cases it can take 3-4 weeks to receive an order through the United Sates Postal Service. Therefore, we need to wait a full four weeks before your package can be officially considered lost. I let them know that it had, in fact, been over a month, and got then got this message: Thank you for contacting yourmusic.com. We received your inquiry regarding missing items in your yourmusic.com order number XXXXXXXXXX. Please review the "Order Status" column in the Order Summary section of the invoice that arrived with your shipment. If the selections are not listed on the invoice, they were sent in a separate package and should arrive within the next couple of weeks. If the missing selections are listed on the invoice with a status of "Enclosed" and they have not yet arrived, please let us know and we will follow up on the missing items. Thank you for shopping at yourmusic.com. Should you have any additional questions or comments, do not hesitate to contact us. Not cool.

I know - that's why I was saying that everything was supposedly sent on the same day. Just seems weird that one selection would arrive over a week ahead of the twenty or so others if they were all shipped together, like the website and email say. I'm sure I'll get them eventually. They may not have shipped together. I have placed about four or five multi-item orders. Each item in my order has always shipped the same day but each item was shipped in its own box. You may be seeing 20 packages arriving at your place in the next few days. Christmas in February!!! B-) Or March...if I'm lucky. All items supposedly shipped 2/9, one item arrives a few days later, all others MIA.

It's great, Dan; I picked it up at Costco a few months back. Although the REALLY weird shit is in the second season. Nothing could be as weird as how badly Laura Flynn-Boyle has decayed in the looks department, though. Makes me glad my "crush of the show" was Sherilyn Fenn! I found a Twin Peaks website with a complete listing of cast members-I had no idea that David Duchovny was in this, and Heather Graham played a waitress at the diner with the damn fine cup o' joe and Alicia Witt, who played Cybil Shepherd's daughter on the sitcom was also on Twin Peaks. Also, Pete Martell was played by Jack Nance, who had the lead role in Eraserhead. The second season was good, but I thought the show sort of lost its way after Laura's killer was revealed. Unfortunately, I've read repeatedly that Artisan has no plans to release season two on dvd, so it would seem that those crappy vhs tapes are all we'll have for some time.

I have to admit that I used the investment potential of the box to justify dropping yet another $100+ on cds this month.

This was mentioned in passing in another thread, but I thought it may deserve its own thread: http://www.hip-oselect.com/catalogue_motownsingles1.asp

I placed a large order (20+ discs) with yourmusic about 3 weeks ago and supposedly all of the items shipped on the same day a couple days after placing the order. I received one item (the Jack Johnson box) a week ago, but still haven't received any of the other items. Has anyone else experienced a big delay between receiving seperate items that were supposedly shipped together?

I realize I'm late here, but most of those Sixth St. places are second rate, with one notable exception: Banjara, on the corner of 6th and 1st. The best I've had in the city so far is Chola, in midtown. The most overrated (IMO, obviously) that I've had is Tabla.

I'm planning to consolidate this weekend, but I'm a little overwhelmed by all the offers I've received in the mail. I'm tempted to go with Nelnet, partly because of their 24 hour customer service, but I've never heard of the company before. Besides possibly saving a few pennies by shopping around, are there any big advantages to going with one company or another? Any particularly good or bad experiences? Thanks.

I went right after it opened. The new building works far better than the old one. I can't really say how long it would take to digest everything, because it was so crowded that my party left after a few hours - it seemed better to wait for the hoopla to die down a little. There were so many people it was difficult to get a good look at much of the work.

Just an FYI - over the long term, tuna is actually quite bad for cats and can lead to serious urinary tract problems. I used to feed my cats tuna as a treat before a vet mentioned this to me and some subsequent research confirmed it. I have no idea why this warning isn't more commonly given to cat owners. Off the top of my head, I can't remember if it's the mercury content or the magnesium content or both. As an alternative, try a little cheese. Most cats like it. If I have to give my cat a pill, I always hide it in a big gob of cream cheese. As far as catching the kittens goes, in my experience you're just going to have to build up their trust. If you trap one and not the other, I have a feeling you'll never see the other again. Go out to where they are, don't get too close, hold out some cat treats (like Whiska Lickings or something) and stay very, very still. Wait for them to approach you. The first time they probably won't come towards you at all, but they'll watch you. The second time you go out they may or may not come about 1/10 of the way towards you. The time after that they may come halfway. The next time they'll be eating out of your hand. Once that's happened, they'll follow you home. At least, that's the sort of experience I've had.

Make room in that 1/10 of a percent for me (and my girlfriend). I thought this was the worst Eastwood movie ever. On my very long list of complaints is the awkward pacing of the film. She goes from not being able to hit a speed bag to being 13-0 in about fifteen minutes, whereas you feel like you're stuck in a time trap for the final few days portrayed in the film. In a certain way, the film reminded me of Requeim for a Dream. Both films wanted to hit me in the gut, but both went about it in such a contrived way that I walked out feeling talked down to and a little pissed off. I have a huge amount of respect for Clint Eastwood, so this was a real bummer for me.

I work for a consulting firm solving math problems. -
It might be easier to unload it on ebay. Can't imagine you'd get much less than $30 for it.

They've been telling me that "Translinear Light" has been backordered since I placed my order over a week ago! Odd, they said mine shipped a couple of days ago. They must be using some lottery system rather than a FIFO distribution process. Very strange. FWIW, my Translinear Light finally shipped yesterday, but I still have multiple discs on backorder. For $5.99, there's not a lot of room for complaint.

Those titles are no longer on the BMG site. The only difference I've seen is "newly added" titles show up on the BMG page a day or two earlier. I've found one exception: The Charlie Parker Verve Master Takes box is on BMG but not on YM.

I ordered 15 cds last week. All but four are on backorder.

For a slightly different take on things, here is the Wire's top 50. (The Wire is sort of like the Avant-Garde equivilent to the Wire - if it's good and a little wierd it's in.) The typos aren't my fault, I copied this from another page. I made the correction of changing Ayers to Ayler, but left the rest as was. I've heard about one-third to half of these. Many are interesting but not quite "there", such as the Banhart (he's part of the burgeoning "free folk" movement), the Fennesz (he sounds too much like Markus Popp for my taste), and the Arthur Russell. I find Wolf Eyes unlistenable. Brian Wilson should have been higher up on the list, IMO (where is he on the Tracks list, BTW???). As for the rap on the list, Dizzee Rascal is pretty cool, his delivery reminds me a little of Slick Rick (perhaps only because he's British), but he gets his producers to lay down very innovative tracks for him. I guess the Madvillian is cool, but MF Doom is getting a little repetitive for me. Kanye West is Kanye West - do you really need to buy an album when you hear it everywhere? It's pretty good, but... I have to pick up Holy Ghost soon. I was dragging my feet on it for a while, as I kept asking myself "Do I really need another nine cds of Ayler?" Then, one morning, I woke up and said "What the hell was I thinking? Of COURSE I need another nine cds of Ayler!" I've never checked out Keiji Haino. Any fans? How would you rate the signal-to-noise ratio? albert ayler - holy ghost sonic youth - sonic nurse fennesz - venice death prod - deathprod box animal collective - sung tongs devendra banhart - rejoice in the hands wolf eyes - burned mind wilco - a ghost is born pg six - the well of memory einsturzende neubauten - perpetuum mobile arthur russel - calling out of context ellen fullman & konrad sprenger - ort brian wilson - smile akira rabelais - spellewauernyg... radian - juxaposition bark psychosis - codename dustsucker dizzee rascal - showtime keiji haino - black blues bjork - medulla ghost - hypnotic underworld zeena parkins & ikue mori - phamton orchard cLOUDDEAD - ten sunburned hand of man - rare wood ramon sender - worldfood alvin curran - lost marbles madvillian - madvilliany steve harris & zaum - above our heads the sky splits open the hafler trio - how to slice a loaf of bread electralane - the power out deerhoof - milk man antena - camino del sol mv + ee - lunar blues kazuo imai - far & wee the streets - a grand dont come for free kanye west - the college dropout boredoms - seadrum/hosue of sun sunn0))) - white 2 arcade fire - funeral anthony braxton quartet - 23 standards rammellzee -bi-conicals jack rose - raag manifestos stereolab - margerine nick cave and the bad seeds - abbatoir blues comets on fire - blue cathedral keiji haino - next lets try changing the shape niobe - voodooluba soft pink truth - do you wnat the new... thalia zedek - trust not those whom without some touch of madness tucker martine - broken hearted dragonflies black dice - creature comforts

For the subject exams, it's all about your percentile. In some exams, 75% will put you in the 90th percentile, in other exams, it will put you in the 70th. Bear in mind that they give many different exams in one testing period, but they calculate the percentile for each exam individually. What I am saying only applies to the subject tests. The computer-based general exams are scored differently.

Here's my take: the general GRE is a somewhat more difficult version of the SAT. The math section will be a cakewalk for you, since you have a science background. Ditto the logic section. The verbal section is a vocabulary test as much as anything else, and you're not going to improve your vocabulary to the point where you are likely to see improved test results in a short period of time. In sum, I wouldn't bother studying for the general. I took the physics GRE in 1999. Half of it was a cakewalk. The other half was a surprise in various ways: 1) There were more questions of an advanced nature than I had anticipated. For instance, there was a three part quantum perturbation theory question, were each part relied on the answer from the previous part. 2) There were a lot of historical questions. For instance, who published paper X, who first discovered Y, what device was used to measure the speed of light in the 19th sentury, etc., etc. I had about 10 questions (out of 100) like this. 3) There were a few questions just designed to test whether you were familiar with certain, seldom used notations, particularly in nuclear physics, which is obviously of some relevance to chemistry.
