  5. Indeed!
  6. ← My point, Ray, is that the United States' infrastructure would definitely have been in better shape after four-plus years of Gore as President or four years of Gore followed by McCain. Bush has failed to allot the New Orleans district of the Army Corps of Engineers anything close to what it has requested since 2002. Budget Cuts Do you think that Gore, who would have arguably been the greatest environmentalist to serve as President (sorry all of you misguided Nader supporters), might have spent some money to help restore the Louisiana wetlands? Do you think that the United States might have had the money for wetland restoration and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' projects if it had not been saddled by a President intent on fighting a costly war in Iraq and granting tax cuts to the rich?
  7. Total hackery. Just because New Orleans was always poor and high-crime doesn't mean that the feds were not responsible for maintaining order post-disaster. The whole point of a federal response is that local authorities are not equipped to handle natural disasters, regardless of how professional or competent they are to start with. ← Hardly "total hackery." There's more than enough blame to go around on the federal, state, local, and even (in some cases) individual levels. Lots of people and organizations they trusted fucked up on this one. ← Of course there's plenty of blame to go around. That, however, is not what this shitbag is saying. He's arguing that: 1) The NO local police is first and foremost to blame, and that those who disagree are just "Bush-bashing"; 2) That Howard Dean is charging racism--without so much as providing a quote, instead choosing to put Jesse Jackson's words in Dean's mouth; 3) That Ray Nagin, who was a REPUBLICAN until running for mayor, is representative of the Democratic party as a whole; and 4) That it's something extraordinary that the poorest city in America can't magically come up with a better police force. It's a cynical attempt at a whitewash of the Bush administration's actions in New Orleans, laced with spin from top to bottom. Feebly attempting to excuse the inexcusable? That's my definition of hackery. ← Big Wheel, IF Kerry was president, and a Republican Gov and Mayor left hundreds upon hundreds of buses unused(except to take some people to the Superdome) you don't think you would be bitching much more about the locals, than what the Feds did or did not do? You and others would be screaming bloody murder, wondering why the fuck they didn't bus everyone out of town. I know, everything would have gone perfectly if only Kerry had been the president, and it wouldn't have been an issue. http://www.breitbart.com/news/2005/09/07/D8CFNMPG0.html ← If Kerry had been elected President, someone far more competent than Michael Brown would be heading FEMA. If Kerry had been elected President, the budget for the New Orleans district of the U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers would not have been so drastically cut. New Orleans district of the U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers If the rights of U.S. citizens had been respected in 2000, we would not be in Iraq now; and either Gore or McCain would be President, so this whole mess would probably have been avoided. Are you EVER going to stop apologizing for Bush and admit that this semblance of a man has accomplished next to nothing positive during his 4-plus years as President???
  8. My picks: New England Miami Cleveland Buffalo Pittsburgh Washington Carolina Minnesota Seattle Jets Giants San Francisco Green Bay San Diego Baltimore Philadelphia (total points: 42)
  9. I really want the Farmer/Golson/Jazztet set, but the two times that I purchased more recently released sets I was rewarded soon after with older sets that I wanted being added to the running low/last chance list. Of the older sets, the Max Roach set is probably furthest up the queue.
  10. For those of you who did not receive a flyer via e-mail, Collectors' Choice Music is having a 15%-off sale through August 28th (in addition to their standing offer of free shipping for U.S. orders of $50 or more). Although CCM tends to be a bit overpriced on most things, this sale is an excellent way to pick up Rhino Handmade releases (CCM charges the same list price as the RhinoHandmade site), and some of the Mosaics sets that they carry might be a bit cheaper (15% off with free shipping, but add state sales tax [at least for California residents]). At any rate, http://cdshopper.cjb.net indicates that the coupon code for this sale is 07245 .
  11. Thanks to Hans, Stereojack, and Paul for the Mance Lipscomb recommendation. I received a second-hand copy of this in the mail today, and I listened to it straight through - it sounds great! I also received the first Mance Lipscomb Arhoolie disc earlier this week; but I thought that the sound (at least on my computer - I was able to listen to the Rhino disc on my normal CD player) was not nearly as good, although the performances were top-notch. As for the other recommendations, I will mull them over during the next few days. Collectors' Choice Music is have a 15% off sale through August 28th (free shipping on all U.S. orders $50 and over), and I believe that they stock all of the Rhino Handmade discs (that are in print). I received an e-mail flyer regarding this sale, but according to http://cdshopper.cjb.net, the coupon code is 07245 . I will probably go ahead and get the Doug Sahm.
  12. HOLY SMOKES!!! Madness!!! I tried to sell my CD copy of this set (after I bought the LP version) on EBAY a couple of years back, and I could not get anyone to meet the reserve of a few hundred dollars. With more than an hour left, the price per CD is almost $147, which certainly must be a record for a Mosaic set.
  13. The release of the Fats Domino Complete Reprise Recordings CD means that I will be placing an order with Rhino Handmade in the near future. I do not yet have any Rhino Handmade releases, so I was hoping that others would be able to post their thoughts on the following sets that I am considering purchasing. (Of course, I would also welcome your thoughts about any other releases that you think are exceptional.) Thanks!!! Ray Charles in Concert (2-CD set) Mance Lipscomb - American Folk Song Traditionalist Sings Trouble In Mind (1 CD) Josh White - The Elektra Years (2-CD set) Also, do any of you Doors fans highly recommend any of the Rhino Handmade Doors releases? Aren't a lot (all?) of these now distributed directly by Ray Manzarek and co.?
  14. Just under $14.00 per disc is probably the best price that you are going to get until after Christmas. One can hope that after Christmas this set becomes available through BMG Music Club and/or YourMusic.com. Thanks for posting this, Hans.
  15. I think that $450 is on the high side. With a little patience and some luck, you should be able to nab one on EBay for less than $300.
  16. Happy Birthday, Lon! I hope that you will get to spend the day doing (just about) whatever you want to do.
  17. Would be interested in hearing your thoughts on this set (not that I am going to pull the trigger or anything.. ) ← sidewinder, I only had the chance to listen to the first three discs of the Ory set over the weekend, and I am afraid that I have relatively little to add in terms of insight to the thoughtful analyses provided in prior threads (links provided by LAL and montg on pages 2 and 7 of this thread respectively). The sound is excellent, and the sidemen, for the most part, are worthy bandmates to Ory. I am very glad to have this set, but I will stop short of saying that it is essential. Eight CD's is quite a lot of music. Of course, if you are a hardcore traditional jazz enthusiast, you may well disagree on this point.
  18. I am VERY sorry, Conrad. Please take care in this difficult time.
  19. Would be interested in hearing your thoughts on this set (not that I am going to pull the trigger or anything.. ) ← I'll let you know after the weekend is over. I did not get very far through the set last night.
  20. The Kid Ory set that I ordered Tuesday morning arrived today, and I was a little surprised that the number was so low - 812. I imagine that this will end up being one of the rarest Mosaics. Now I am off to listen to Disc 1.
  21. Three days seems to be the standard amount of time necessary for a Mosaic shipment to arrive in southern California, but my last order (placed Tuesday morning PST) arrived today.
  22. Perhaps they should. I realize that this discussion is just a bit silly, but I would find it incredible (and bad business to boot) if Mosaic has actually had to destroy sets because of the expiration of a lease.
  23. Unless there's a license-imposed time limit on the O'Day. You may want to check that out. ← Ron, do you have any reliable information that indicates that Mosaic has ever been prevented from selling a set that it had already produced because of a license-imposed time limitation? Nope, no hard information. I was just recommending that Yves--and others--verify that there is not such a limitation in this particular case, as opposed to assuming that there isn't one at the risk of missing out on this set if there in fact were such a limitation. In fact, on the "Last Chance" page of the Mosaic web site, they state the following regarding their leases of recordings: So, it's quite conceivable that a particular lease could set an absolute limit on selling time regardless of the number of units Mosaic happens to have in stock. And, such a time limit would make sense: in the case of the O'Day set for example, Mosaic conceivably could have manufactured all 7500 units up front, rendering any time limit meaningless without a limit on the time they can "offer the set for sale." ← Ron, I see your points, and I appreciate that you are giving good advice (i.e., check with Mosaic) to those on the fence. I think, though, that the statement on the "Last Chance" page to which you refer is just a failed attempt to summarize the effects of Mosaic's lease agreements; but I obviously do not know that for certain. As for the idea of Mosaic manufacturing all of the copies of a set up front, I have considered that possiblity. Aside from the impracticability of such an approach (in terms of capital outlay and storage problems), though, I think that most lease agreements would include a clause stating that Mosaic reserves the right to sell any remaining sets it has on hand after the lease expires provided that the number of such sets does not exceed a certain number. Again, I am speculating just like you. I do know, however, that over the years I have had the opportunity to purchase a large number of partial sets directly from Mosaic; and to me it does not seem likely that a record company would prohibit sales of complete sets after expiration of a lease agreement but not partial ones. Mosaic has also from time to time sold small quantities of sets that were returned to them or uncovered in their storage areas. Yesterday, for instance, Mosaic's website offered for sale one copy of the New Orleans Atlantic Jazz Sessions boxed set, which has been out of print for some time now, along with two copies of the Amos Milburn lp set (which are still available!) If anyone has received any comment of note from Michael Cuscuna or someone else in the know about this topic, I would love to hear it.
