sounds like you're saying something negative about trane.................... How the hell could you get this impression? when you don't elaborate, how the hell could I NOT get that impression......... Don't have a clue. You must have a problem. Where is my negative mention of John Coltrane? If I'd said beef ruin the taste of cherries, would you say I was dissing cherries or beef? Something else is going on in your head, no, i'd say that is a stupid comparison and check your own head CUZ you're not qualified to get into mine. Go listen to some Lee Konitz, you need something to put you to sleep

sounds like you're saying something negative about trane.................... How the hell could you get this impression? when you don't elaborate, how the hell could I NOT get that impression......... By reading more carefully or thinking more clearly? If, say, Peewee Russell had been influenced by Trane and the resulting mix didn't quite work, to point that out wouldn't reflect negatively on Coltrane but merely indicate that Peewee's pre-existing virtues were not that compatible with Coltrane's. That's all that was meant. BTW, I did know a marvelous Peewee Russell-steeped clarinetist, the recently deceased Frank Chace, who also greatly admired Coltrane and beautifully integrated some aspects of Trane into his own highly individual style. then say he tried to play like trane and it didn't work out, and we all know what IMPRESSIONS are, right?

Ah, here we have the crux of the matter! I understand how the earliest days of the Coltrane influence messed w/Pepper, but - eventually he integrated it. Chuck says he "lost much of" it, which may or may not be another way of saying the same thing, but I don't think that Pepper of the mid-70s and beyond (which includes the Vanguard material) was what it was if he hadn't gone through Trane the way he did. In other words, if Pepper had never heard Trane, I don't think that he would have evolved to the point to where he played like he did by the time of those recordings. No matter, count me as part of the minority (here, anyway) which prefers later Pepper. Similarly, I prefer later Mobley. In both cases, the later work ain't as "pretty" as the earlier, but there's an...immediacy, a feeling that there's no longer a layer of "music" between the music and the emotion, if that makes any sense. Which is not to say that that earlier layer was superfluous, or shallow, or anything like that. Far from it. Just that it seems like in the later work, it was no longer needed, that both players might have felt put upon, perhaps even belabored, to go back and play with that vibe again. As always, mileages can and will vary. as usual, you said it better than I could.........

I prefer the gritter, edgier tone of his later work as opposed to the light, airy sound of his earlier work........

    Art Pepper

Wow, I had written Pepper off as one whose personal battles was more interesting than his music although we've seen many jazz musicians experience those same battles. Since I call myself a collector(bop/hard bop)and since he did establish some prominence, I purchased "Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section" a few years ago because of the connection to Miles' rhythm section and forgot about him. Ran across his name on some list the other day and as I often do started researching. To end this story, I purchased the "Mosaic Select", the "Complete Galaxy Recordings", "Thursday Night", "Friday Night", and "Saturday Night at The Village Vanguard" plus "4 More Or Less" from the Vanguard sessions. Just rec'd the Saturday Night disc and am blown away by the cut "The Trip". He was definitly influenced by Trane. Elvin Jones was the drummer on the set.........................
  21. WOW, thank you very much for that..............

    Pepper Adams

Ok folks, time for a little controversey. Is there any doubt in anyones mind that Pepper Adams was the greatest bari saxophonist that ever played? Yes, better than Mulligan(why do they keep comparing the two) Serge Chaloff, Gil Melle, Cecil Payne, Harry Carney, Nick Brignola. I'm probably leaving out a few. Of the current players, Ronnie Cuber and Gary Smulyan come closest. For me, next to Pepper it's Leo Parker. I've got my suit of armor on so let the attacks begin........................
  23. I like Jazz and Jazz Singers. Listened to audio samples of her latest cd. She is NOT a Jazz Singer and she is NOT singing Jazz..................
  24. Can't speak for everybody, but I was still in grade school... Discovered Strozier throuh Don Ellis & Oliver Nelson sides ca.1973 or so, then some Keno Duke Starta-East sides, and took it from there... Funny thing is, Leonard Feather consistently used Stozier as a poster boy for his "Crow Jim" crap, an example of a fully able white cat who wasn't getting gigs because of his race. Believe that he even posed the Strozier question to Max Roach, who took it at face value. Later on, I remember Strozier claiming that he had "African ancestors", or something like that, maybe in a DB article about Oliver NElson's early 70s African tour, where Strozier's ethnicity apparently caused a lot of specualtion amongst the spectators. Nelson was coy about the whole thing. This thread, though, is the first time I've read confident claims that Strozier wasn't "white", or even "mixed", but outright "black". After all these years! (and opportunities) Life gets wierder every damn day... "mixed", "outright black", I usually respect your comments more than anyone else on this forum but this coming from you is confusing, maybe you need to talk face-to-face with some black people. You will not hear "mixed" and/or "outright Black" come out of their mouths. OUTRIGHT BLACK, what a stupid comment. no one is "outright" anything. A white woman with blond hair and blue eyes once told me that she was an african american. I looked at her like she was cracy until she told me she was a native of South Africa and is now a US citizen so technically she was correct. As intelligent as you are, I'm sure you won't repeat such ridiculous comments in the future, you're to smart for that.................
  25. Thanks cali, now I know I'm not going crazy. Looks can be deceiving. At first glance he like many others appears to be white, but unless you're stevie wonder a second and third look will tell you that this man is a black man with a lot of white blood in his ancestry like myself and many others. Before she died at age 97 my paternal grandmother told me, after I had asked her, that she remembered when she was a little girl, her great grandmother was a "big old white lady"
