LF Eric Alexander and Nathan Davis
mrjazzman replied to mrjazzman's topic in Offering and Looking For...
That's a great question I should have asked him after the show last Saturday at Yoshi's in Oakland......... I appreciate the info, what's the music like on that session................ -
Looking for the cd's "Extra Innings" and "Heavy Hitters" on Pony Canyon and "The Other Side Of Morning" by Nathan Davis................
-
Saw Eric at Yoshi's in Oakland last Saturday with Cedar Walton, great show. He must be my favorite living tenor saxophonist because I have 25 of his approx 28 sessions. He autographed his first session as a leader, "Straight UP" and his latest, "Revival Of The Fittest", very nice fellow. I'm curious to know what you all think of Mr. Alexander and the music he makes. Also, DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET "HEAVY HITTERS" AND "EXTRA INNINGS" BY MR. ALEXANDER, two Japanease releases that are out of print and extremely expensive if you can find them..................

Is it possible to hear all of the Count's organ work on one or two cd's/lp's? If so what cd's or Lp's do I need to purchase. Thanks...............

If you think she looks good now, you should have seen her when I met her in the early 60's when Miles appeared at Basin Street West on Boradway St in San Francisco. My next door neighbor was friends with Miles and asked me if I wanted to go hear him, I almost fell to the floor while saying "YES", after the set Mr. Velez and I went to Miles's room and there she was in what then was an extremly sexy, sheer (not quite see-through)chifon dress. At one point Miles said to her in that famous raspy voice of his "go put some dam clothes on". I was 15 or 16 at the time and was in total, shocking BLISS. 45 years later, I remember it as if it happened last night..............

where did you find a copy of "The Other Side Of Morning" by Nathan Davis..............

I purchased the cd "Northern Illinois University DeKalb, Illinois 1976" from ebay, but I don't see this cd/lp on amg or amazon. Does anybody know why???????????? Any info on this date. Thanks.......

Carlos Garnett and Chuck Mangione before he was Chuck Mangione
-
Example: "A New Perspective" by Donald Byrd, now there is a set where the voices are in tune and compliment the music as opposed to detract from it
-
I think to compare "Lift Every Voice" to "Grass Roots" is a SERIOUS stretch of ones imagination. One is a piece of junk the other, because of the power of the composer and the in the groove foot tapping finger poppin quality of the music, is a near classic............
-
As much as I like Andrew Hill(I own 6 of his titles), don't know what I was thinking when I purchased "Lift Every Voice". I don't mind voices if the fit in, on this set they, imho, definitely DON'T fit in. To make matters worse I, as always, listened to sound samples prior to purchasing. I must be slipping. Since I own all Lee Morgan led sessions, I deceided to try and collect all of his sideman sessions. I should have passed this one up, what a waste of time for Lee and Woody Shaw, Carlos Garnett and the rest of the guys....................

Lou Donaldson, 82 yrs old, one of the last jazz masters alive at Yoshi's Oakland sat & sun nite 02-28-09 & 03-01-09 Like James Moody, LD is a great bop alto saxophonist and storyteller. Underappreciated master still alive gave a great show sun nite, with hammond b-3 player akiko tsurgua and randy jonston on guitar, great music. He told me he's been trying to get to this club for the last 10 years, whats up PETER, Ledisi and no Donaldson??????????

Why didn't Anthony Ortega's career take off like those of his contemporaries like bird and stitt especially later on. His early work sounds really good. Don't care for the avant garde/free aspects of his later work. I've got "A Man And His Horn(s)" and "Earth Dance" (Jazz For Young Moderns) on the way. Any thoughts??????

Thus spaketh the Lord.... thanks

Need some help from the experts. Dexter Gordon:Quartet, Jive Fernando(LP), Live At The Both/And Club San Francisco Is this all the same music from the live at the both/and set??????
-
I'd disagree stronlgy that all (I almost want to say ANY) of these saxophonists are "better" than Chariie Rouse! I STRONGLY agree with your disagreement................
-
Saw Moody at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA a couple of years ago. Still plays great and is a very witty story teller.............
-
so, these experiences make you an expert..........I DON'T think so..................... I agree with you on this one, you need to "do other things". don't respond to my posts.............,plain and simple chuck, ignore my posts(as anyone can see, I don't spend a lot of time on this site) if you can, but you know you CAN NOT ignore my TRUTHFUL posts can you chuck. so you met pepper and trane "before their deaths" SO F------ WHAT.............."strange situation where I had personal contact with each before their deaths". CHUCK, guess what............we are all going to DIE at some point in time.....whose going to be with you "before your death"...................... You know, I've never noticed your posts before, but you could try being a little less hostile, and more respectful of others? as I've said and will continue to say, I NEVER start out that way but will ALWAYS respond in kind. And remember, we're using the written form of communication here, it's not like we're having a face to face or phone conversation. A lot gets lost using the written form of communication...........
