    Pepper Adams

Ok folks, time for a little controversey. Is there any doubt in anyones mind that Pepper Adams was the greatest bari saxophonist that ever played? Yes, better than Mulligan(why do they keep comparing the two) Serge Chaloff, Gil Melle, Cecil Payne, Harry Carney, Nick Brignola. I'm probably leaving out a few. Of the current players, Ronnie Cuber and Gary Smulyan come closest. For me, next to Pepper it's Leo Parker. I've got my suit of armor on so let the attacks begin........................
  3. I like Jazz and Jazz Singers. Listened to audio samples of her latest cd. She is NOT a Jazz Singer and she is NOT singing Jazz..................
  4. Can't speak for everybody, but I was still in grade school... Discovered Strozier throuh Don Ellis & Oliver Nelson sides ca.1973 or so, then some Keno Duke Starta-East sides, and took it from there... Funny thing is, Leonard Feather consistently used Stozier as a poster boy for his "Crow Jim" crap, an example of a fully able white cat who wasn't getting gigs because of his race. Believe that he even posed the Strozier question to Max Roach, who took it at face value. Later on, I remember Strozier claiming that he had "African ancestors", or something like that, maybe in a DB article about Oliver NElson's early 70s African tour, where Strozier's ethnicity apparently caused a lot of specualtion amongst the spectators. Nelson was coy about the whole thing. This thread, though, is the first time I've read confident claims that Strozier wasn't "white", or even "mixed", but outright "black". After all these years! (and opportunities) Life gets wierder every damn day... "mixed", "outright black", I usually respect your comments more than anyone else on this forum but this coming from you is confusing, maybe you need to talk face-to-face with some black people. You will not hear "mixed" and/or "outright Black" come out of their mouths. OUTRIGHT BLACK, what a stupid comment. no one is "outright" anything. A white woman with blond hair and blue eyes once told me that she was an african american. I looked at her like she was cracy until she told me she was a native of South Africa and is now a US citizen so technically she was correct. As intelligent as you are, I'm sure you won't repeat such ridiculous comments in the future, you're to smart for that.................
  5. Thanks cali, now I know I'm not going crazy. Looks can be deceiving. At first glance he like many others appears to be white, but unless you're stevie wonder a second and third look will tell you that this man is a black man with a lot of white blood in his ancestry like myself and many others. Before she died at age 97 my paternal grandmother told me, after I had asked her, that she remembered when she was a little girl, her great grandmother was a "big old white lady"
  6. I must need stronger glasses because until I read this thread, I thought Frank Strozier was black
  7. There are Bose speakers in the ceiling and a lot of wires. I want to be able to hear my cd's, radio stations and the big screen tv through these speakers. What components do I need to purchase to accomplish this. Thanks..............
  8. as far as im concerned, it's not cheating, going to go pull that cd and listen to it. Did Sanders do anything that wasn't considered avant garde?. Can't hear that gendre these days................. Guy, you get the prize, that is a super listen. Too bad Handy didn't do more after Monterey, saw him recently at Yoshi's in Oakland, looks in great shape for his age..............
  9. as far as im concerned, it's not cheating, going to go pull that cd and listen to it. Did Sanders do anything that wasn't considered avant garde?. Can't hear that gendre these days................. Wow, I need you guys to tell me what to listen to in my own collection.....Crazy

  12. Isn't it a shame Trane and Sonny only recorded that one song together, but what a classic encounter it was......................

  14. I know this has probably been discussed before but I'm curious. Wich tenor tandem is your favorite. One of mine happens to be Blues Up And Down with Eddie Lockjaw Davis and Johnny Griffin. Also, where can I find Dexter Gordon and Wardell Gray boxing each other...................
  15. For what it's worth, Stanley plays, imo, the best jazz version of Can't Buy Me Love ever. From Disc V of the Mosaic set(Mr. Natural). Also, again imo, his later stuff does not compare to his early Blue Notes.........
  16. Anybody else going to Yoshi's, Oakland tonight????????
  17. At The Cotton Club 1956 by Lonhill Jazz. To all you Brownie experts, is this new, never released before music??????????
  18. I prefer the pounding, heavy handed, cymbal crashing technique of Tony Williams and Elvin Jones over Max Roach........
  19. To my fellow Dexter Gordon lovers. Just purchased the LP "Jive Fernando". While in the search mode, came across a CD "Quartet"(thought I had everything) which lists the same titles. Jive Fernando sounds like a live date. The Quartet CD is on the way as I'm writing this. Can someone clear this up for me................
  20. Because the title track and QuePasa are so indelible, it's Song For My Father for me...........
  21. Hate to buy the LP only to have the cd release shortly after. I have everything else................
  22. Will Lighthouse '69 ever be released on CD????????

    Al Hibbler

jazzbo, brownie Before I posed the question I listened to sound samples of the song from "A Meeting of the Times" on amazon and amg. I heard no singing. Im not a hibbler fan but a co-worker approached me and said his father was a big fan of Hibbler and could not find that song. So, if you guys say he sings that cut, that's good enough for me, now I can purchase it.....................
