The one that sticks in my mind was Jimmy Smith's "Cool Blues". I read the Penguin review and I just had to have it. OOP! Ahh. I searched the used bins for several years and finally found a copy at some on-line shop in Florida. I paid almost $30, which I thought was a steal. It came in and I put it on. Good stuff. Nice Tina Brooks. When it was done, I thought to myself, "Hell, 'The Sermon' is better than this".

LF: early Japanese jazz CDs
Kevin Bresnahan replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Offering and Looking For...
Some of the earlier CDs from Japan sound pretty good. Many are flat transfers of the master with no EQ and almost all of them were mastered at a much lower level than anything done later. In this list, I could see wanting to check out the old Impulse! CDs but those old Columbia/CBS/Sony Miles discs? Yuck. Older CBS masterings almost always sound harsh & tinny to me. -
I've been meaning to get that one. I wouldn't wait too long. I think it's been oop for quite a few years now. It isn't hard to find now but it may start disappearing, especially if enough people reading this thread start looking for it.

Baseball Statistics Question
Kevin Bresnahan replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I've always wondered about the Cleveland Browns records myself. Are they the Baltimore Ravens records now? Is Jim Brown the Baltimore Ravens legacy? If no, then why not? It's even weirder when you think, well the Baltimore Colts went to Indianapolis, and every year we read about whether the Colts will ever get anywhere without Unitas. Do the Indianpolis Colts still consider themselves the Baltimore Colts legacy or do the Baltimore Ravens get that honor? -
I like all Genesis CDs, with a preference for the post-Gabriel stuff, particularly "Abacab" and "Genesis" (with "Mama"). However, I would love to see them with Gabriel as he left waaaaay before I became a fan. I've seen the three-man version in concert several times. The show didn't change a whole lot and I have no urge to go see it again over in Europe. If it had Gabriel? Well, that'd be new and I'd have to look into that.

One of Lew's latest CDs, which I think is available from his web site at Jazz Corner, is another one with Lew in a killer trio. I may like it just a bit more than "Black & Tan Fantasy". This thread just reminded me that I recently picked up an old LT trio LP and I've forgotten to spin it! I'll have to rectify that this weekend. BTW, that "Tenuki's Night Out" CD is a Japanse import, complete with obi (when I got one in). Quite a steal at $16. Kevin

Wait for www.cdwow.com They will have the Japanese versions for way less than that, and yeah, I agree, screw $43.75 each!! hmv.co.jp alread has the box (at pre-order) for around $100 but wait. As the release nears, the prices drop like crazy. Be aware that the Japanese set is the only place to get NTSC (US standard) DVD video discs. The EU sets will have PAL DVD video discs. It makes no matter to me as I am only interested in the SACDs anyway, but even less matter - my Denon player will convert PAL to NTSC. Kevin

Herbie's Headhunters in Quad
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
The SACD is wild! Not a pure quad mix, becuase there's some center channel content, but it does sound like ambient echo, so it might be derived from the quad. But, there is also a subwoofer channel, as my sub is pumpin' now. This is so cool. I forgot how fun this SACD is. My living room sounds alive right now. Up until now, I've pretty much stuck with the stereo sector of this SACD because the multi-channel is so different I didn't really dig it. But as I sit here, hearing all of this sound swirling around, it's pretty cool. When I stand in the middle of the 5.1 mix, Maupin's echo-effects are whacked. That's probably why I stuck with the stereo mix. But when I sit here on the edge of the living room and the "surround" sound is in front of me, each instrument has way more difinition and the room echo makes Maupin's sax sound like it does in stereo. I always lament that Greg pissed off so many people to the point where they threw SACD off of their plate. This stuff is great. Time to go switch back to stereo and reall rock the walls (can you all tell that the wife isn't home?). Kevin -
Originally, this tour was going to reunite "Genesis", as in "Genesis with Peter Gabriel". If that had happened, I'd be there, come hell or high water. But the "Then They Were Three" Genesis?? They toured like 8-fucking-trillion days during the 80's & 90's. Why spend big bucks to see them? Use your money and pre-order the new multi-channel SACDs (and a cheap, as in less than $200 - think Oppo Digital DV-970HD, SACD player) and enjoy their music ad infinitum. BTW, if you decide to go the SACD route, buy the box set. It has an additional SACD of extras, including the elusive "Me & Virgil". These SACDs are going to break my CD budget for a few months. Gotta buy them from Japan. 5 discs for over $100... gah! But for a Genesis fan, it's a must. Kevin

Herbie's Headhunters in Quad
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
I'll have to give a listen to the multi-channel SACD tonight to see if it's a quad mix. I didn't know that this was released on a quad LP. I thought this SACD was a new mix. Kevin -

No. I thought I was being blatantly un-serious. I used the "wiseass" symbol to show that I was being sacrcastic. I was hoping my sarcasm would make it clear that I don't agree with buying any of these labels' releases. Sarcasm just doesn't work on the Internet. It just doesn't. -

While I agree that it would be wrong to buy the Mingus and Parker/Gillespie Uptown clones, I don't really see the problem with purchasing the Massey Hall or Horace. It's been over 50 years for both.' Guy Why differentiate the Mingus and Parker/Gillespie CDs? I think I know why - Chuck's here and considered a friend. But they're well beyond the 50 year EU term, so if that's the only criteria, buy 'em. I can see if people say, "I won't buy the Mingus and Parker/Gillespie CDs because I want Chuck Nessa's label to succeed." But if you think the 50 year rule is fine for Horace Silver and the Quintet, then it's fine for these as well. Why not screw Chuck's label out of some return on investment too? -
Damn! I had read the encouraging news this summer on the Jazz Corner boards and I assumed he would be around a lot longer. RIP Michael. I have some fond memories of some great blowing. The show he put on with Lovano & Leibman... wow. That's one that will never be forgotten.

Anniversary Quartet: You'll See
Kevin Bresnahan replied to CJ Shearn's topic in Artists & Recordings
I thought I heard that this CD was going to be reissued by LeDonne's current label? Is it already out on the Savant label? -
Every CD is 16 bit/44.1 kHz PCM. Sometimes, the mastering engineer will convert the analog to digital at 20 or 24 bit and work on the digital at that point, but it always has to be converted to 16 bit PCM for CD. If the CD is encoded in HDCD and your player can decode it, there are two extra bits at play, but I'm not sure that both bits are always used. FWIW, I've never been a believer that 20 bit or 24 bit equates to "good sounding CD". It's all in the mastering, not the bits. I've heard just as many crappy-sounding 24 bit masterings as 16 bit ones. Later, Kevin

WinRar's nag screens really piss me off after about the 8,000 th time they pop up to tell you to "pay up". I went to download.com and downloaded/installed 7-zip. Works great and no nag screens.

Happy Birthday, jazzshrink!
Kevin Bresnahan replied to paul secor's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I was wondering if anyone was going to start this thread... it wasn't going to be me! 50. I used to think that was "old". Now, I think it's not too old. Ha! See you at Jack's sale Rob. Kevin -
I just bought a rather expensive television so I was thinking about protecting it. I also am a bit worried about RF interference affecting the picture as I've seen it affect the display model at Circuit City. So, taking advantage of the last day of the $20 Google Check-Out at buy.com, I ordered a Belkin PureAV PF31. Less than $100 delivered. I'll see if it does anything for my system. I doubt it, but I'll give it a try. Later, Kevin

Philly n Elvin: Together! (atlantic)

Ditto. I bought it expecting a "Wow" and got a "ummm, OK". I guess I thought it would be a bit more bombastic? Hank still plays pretty good though. -

The timings on the back of the CD are totally incorrect and would lead one to believe that the tracks are edited. They are not. -

Get the Collectables two-fer which combines "Philly Joe & Elvin: Together" with "Philly Joe's Beat". It has the entire LP, even though the CD says it doesn't. Nothing is omitted from "Philly Joe & Elvin: Together" as far as I can tell. Later, Kevin -
A dvd burner question
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I just downloaded and installed it last week. I haven't really given it much of a workout yet. I bought it mostly for MyDVD Premier, which is part of the bundle. I needed this to start working with my new Panasonic DVD camcorder discs. Kevin
