  1. Brad, I may have just posted a question on another board and you may have answered it - the Wynton Kelly you speak of released on Fresh Sounds, with Hank Mobley - is this it: Famous Ballroom", Baltimore, MD, November 12, 1967 On a Clear Day / Interlude Vee-Jay [J] 25YD 1092/93 Hackensack - On Green Dolphin Street - Milestones - If You Could See Me Now - Speak Low / Theme - * Interpretation's by the Wynton Kelly Quartet (Vee-Jay [J] 25YD 1092/93) Any comments? I'm ready to buy today, if this is actually available. Tks, Marla This is available on Fresh Sounds FSCD 1031, a two CD set issued in 2000. This 2 disc set is the most complete version of this material I've found. Sound is very good. Surprisingly good. Hank seems to go off mike every now & then... not too often though. I just spun it this afternoon and Hank only seems to miss the mike on a couple of ocassions and it might even be the recording "engineer". BTW, I also had the Fresh Sounds 2 CD set of George Coleman with the Kelly trio and I dumped it. If my memory isn't failing me, the sound is a lot worse on that one. Later, Kevin EDIT: Updated my review of the sound.
  2. I can buy Mosaics sets to make a profit if I want! What the hell is wrong with this? Technically, it's a risk on my part. There is no "guarantee" that my purchase will continually appreciate. It's not a great investment if you're looking to make a quick buck. They rarely get big bucks for quite a while after they're oop. Mosaic doesn't care if I buy it or someone else buys it, they just want to sell it. How many sets have timed out already, probably making it a losing venture for Mosaic? I repeat, Mosaic does not care who buys these sets, so long as they sell! Kevin PS: What the hell does Mosaics on eBay have to do with Matha Stewart??? Twisted stuff.
  3. Ahh, that's right. It is acoustic on "Love Story"... but still, it is "Love Story"... I gack every time I play this. I usually hit the skip button pretty quick. It might have something to do with the fact that I've actually seen "Love Story". Later, Kevin
  4. People tell stories of Keiko Jones holding Elvin up so he could play on his last tour. When I hear Hank's playing on this date, I wish I could reach through my speakers and hold him up. He sounds so much like he's just holding on that I get heartbroken hearing him like this. He does go to town on "Summertime" and maybe sounds like the old Hank in bits. I would say "not essential", but you do get the added bonus of some killer Charles Davis. Davis makes the date worthwhile for me. You know as weak as Hank sounds on this, the trio cover of "Theme From Love Story" with Walton on electric piano is weaker. Later, Kevin
  5. Ted, I would freak out leaving my stuff out in my car overnight! No lie. I wouldn't sleep a wink. In fact, I would probably suggest to my wife that she drive during the day and I drive during the night. A couple of sleepless nights would be well worth my piece of mind. Later, Kevin
  6. These guys are playing in Boston and I was intrigued. However, I'm not a big fan of really out stuff. How free "off the beat" is this band? I mean, I like a bit of free playing but I can't stand it if it sounds like everyone's playing off a different metronome, if you get my drift. I always describe the style of free jazz I hate as "everyone's playing a different song". In a way, it really comes down to the drummer. Does Michal Miskiewicz play like a madman all the time or does he keep time? If he is at least keeping some forward momentum going, I can take the rest of the band going off. Later, Kevin
  7. I have moved a lot, almost always with the biggies like Allied and United. Other than a couple of snafus like late arrivals and a few pieces of busted furniture, I've had good experiences with them. I prefer United. However, these big companies all have locals that individually owned and operated and I've heard there are some sleazy operators with "United" on their trucks so caveat emptor. Your best bet is to ask around at a couple of realtors in your area. They hear all the horror stories first-hand so they will be able to give you a heads-up. One thing I will say is this: NEVER trust them with your irreplaceable stuff! NEVER! I have always packed a large case of CDs that are impossible to replace. I have a padded CD case that holds around 75 discs. I also pack all my Mosaics (in their shipping boxes) myself and move them myself. They do not go onto the truck. I never let them move my more expensive audio gear either. No jewelery. No gold. All that stuff goes into the car that's making the move with me. I always have a full car. I hope my moving days are done. I never want to move again. BTW, if saving money's important, get the options for "pack, move & unpack" versus "pack & move" and simply "move". Move is cheapest but they can (and will) milk you for loading time if you don't use standardized moving boxes. The cheapest way in the end is "pack & move". Frankly, I think "unpack" is a waste of dough. All they do is rip open the boxes and dump the stuff out. You wind up with piles of stuff all over the place. At least if you unpack it yourself, you can put it away immediately. Much less chaos that way. Later, Kevin
  8. I wonder why he's selling it? Has he stopped playing? Later, Kevin
  9. I just wish it wsn't mid-week. It's just too far for me to go and I can't miss work because I have a week vacation coming up in April. I really hope Johnny makes another swing through Boston again. BTW, anyone in NYC should go. Michael's playing is worth the price itself. Later, Kevin
  10. Jeez, if that's what Jim's talking about, I'll have to go and delete my comments now. I thought this thread was about burns of commercially available stuff, not unissued material. Jim, do you want me to remove that stuff I posted about the 1958 Blakey session tapes? Kevin
  11. I thought the same thing when I got that reply. I was pretty bummed. I'm sorry everybody if it turns out that my E-mail did this. As others have said, $99 is a great price but not unheard of if they were dumping product. I just figured I'd get them to up the quantity of the listing so I could get one. I never anticipated this. I mean, heck, they sold almost a dozen of them and never noticed. EDIT: In my inquiry, I never mentioned the price. I simply asked why they didn't list multiples since they seem to list one every night. I have no idea why the reply mentioned the price. Kevin
  12. Well, the deal is dead. Brad got the last one if the E-mail I got is any indication. It says: "This listing has been temporarily removed from the store, as the $99 price was an error caused by a default setting within eBay. The listing price for the Bill Evans 17-CD box set is $250.00, NOT $99. All future listings have been adjusted to reflect the proper price. We apologize for any confusion these incorrect listings may have caused." My reply went something like, "$250? Are you nuts? This set typically sells for around $150 used and around $200 new in other eBay auctions." Later, Kevin
  13. BTW, the Blue Note logo on the cover of "The Kicker" cracks me up every time I look at. I guess Blue Note = 42U2 UU42. Must be translated from Klingon. Later, Kevin
  14. I play "The Kicker" a lot. That's probably my favorite. "Stick Up" is a close second and "medina" would round out what makes it to the player most often. I love the autograph I got on "The Kicker". Later, Kevin
  15. I have found the Clifford Brown set in used bins for less than $99. In fact, I once found a sealed box in a "used" bin for $80. I have never seen the Evans set for anything less than $150. Later, Kevin
  16. They all work on the same principal, they block unwanted traffic. The one in Windows is integrated into the operating system so it should know all the "hooks" as well as any outside software company like Symantec. Knowing Microsoft, they probably just licensed someone else's code or bought a company. Later, Kevin
  17. Marla, after I post this, it may not last long, but Dusty Groove has a Japanese CD copy of Face To Face for only $18.99. This is a steal at this price. FWIW, they also have the two Argo dates on LP, but I really didn't think they were anywhere near as good as his Blue Notes. In fact, I dumped both of 'em. Later, Kevin
  18. Soulstation1, these pop-up ads sound suspiciously like spyware to me. You may have supressed them for now but they may pop up () again of you aren't protecting yourself. Try that Microsoft Anti-spyware download. It can help actively protect you. FWIW, I think all of these "Internet Security" packages from both Symantec (Norton) and McAfee suck resources for no good. I've never worked on a machine with this stuff where it did anything helpful. What they really do is make it harder to surf to the point where you (usually accidentally) shut off protection and you're right where you would have been without the package. Just use a good anti-virus and a firewall program. I like Norton for anti-virus and Windows XP for a firewall. BTW, anyone not using Windows XP Pro on their PC should think about doing so, especially if you have problems with your PC crashing. I now have Windows XP Pro on 5 machines that work on directly and not one of them has ever crashed in well over a year. That's a lot of hours on these machines without one "blue screen of death". XP Pro just doesn't crash on me. Later, Kevin
  19. Damn you, Jim! I have come very, very close to buying a Mac lately. The Mac mini really intrigues me... and now this! Later, Kevin
  20. Well, I might just give up on this. I see now where there's a thread started over on the Steve Hoffman forum too. It's probably gonna get crazy to get one of these now with all the people looking at it. Oh well, saved myself $99. Later, Kevin
  21. According to Tom Evered at Blue Note Records, these "Best of" compilations sell very well. Quite a few of their recent "Ballads" CDs sold well enough that they were able to keep other reissue programs going. I know I bought several of these "Ballads" CDs. They are perfect for mellow dinner music when I can't give the music a good listen. People seem to like these mellow comps too. It was only a few years ago that 32Jazz made a mint on those "Jazz For A XXXXX" series of comps. Not enough to stay in business though... Later, Kevin
  22. Hey, it's my own fault... the timing on these things just aren't good for me. I'll get a set one of these days. Last night was volleyball night. Tonight, I'm going to the Sahara Club in Methuen, MA to see a sextet with Bill Pierce and Mick Goodrick. The Evans box will have to wait again. It's fate, I tell ya'. Has anyone E-mailed this place to see if they have a stack of them for sale? I should try that. Later, Kevin
  23. Macs do crash occasionally. I have used Macs and I have used PCs. I will say that until Windows XP Pro, I liked the Mac OS better. Now, with Win XP Pro, not so much difference. Price is another story. Until the Mac mini, PCs kicked ass in this regard. PC apps are much more affordable (and avialable) as well. Money-wise, a PC is still a better choice. As for viruses, I'm also of the camp that the Mac users have been spared the wrath of the scumbags who write the things. If they decide to target Macs, watch out. Kevin
  24. Well, it'd be nice if someone who's been trying for a week got one first...
