Many (all?) opening acts back then were often hampered by having to use the headliners sound system. A lot of them never even get a sound check. I can't tell you the number of times an opening act sounded terrible up on stage. I can remember at least a couple of bands apologizing for their sound because of it.

Just realize that what he died of, prostate cancer, is pretty easy to detect and if caught early, it's usually very treatable. Any man over 45, just make you get your PSA tested every year and don't avoid the finger test (DRE) during your annual physical because it's uncomfortable.

Grant Green: under-estimated as Jazz artist, and Blue Note to blame?
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Milestones's topic in Artists
I really hate that trio date, especially the tune where he gets stuck. It's like fingernails on a chalkboard for me. -
I can't think of any album that I ever got sick of playing but there is a song I never want to hear again. I had a friend who had a car 8-track player. We went out in it all the time in high school. It broke and got stuck with The Doors debut LP on track 4, which was the song "The End". Even the radio wouldn't work. I must've heard that song 50 times one summer. It got to the point where Morrison would sing, "This is the end" & everyone in the car would yell, "PLEASE BE THE END". I finally got it off that track one time by hitting the player right as it was supposed to switch back to track 1. It took a lot of tries but I finally did it. We got that tape out and we never put another tape in.

I don’t get it. I’ve had several remotes stop working suddenly only to open them up and find the batteries leaking all over the battery compartment. Usually when this happens, I check all of my remotes and there have been several times when I’ve found leaking batteries and the remote still functions. WTF? 😀😀

I wonder if you're talking about the late Andy Fusco? He was a big guy who could really play.

I saw Sanborn on several of his later tours when he came back to straight ahead jazz after making his fortune on the smooth side. They were all very good shows. I tried to interact with him the first time I saw him at TCAN in Natick MA and he gave me a shoulder as he booked it out of there. I guess big shots from the smooth jazz world don't have any time for the fans? I saw him a couple more times at Scullers, I think both of those times were with Joey DeFrancesco on organ. Joey seemed to push him pretty hard.

As they say - If you want to make a million dollars in the Jazz industry, start with two million.

The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour (Apple Germany). I was able to pick the "true stereo" LP (A1/B3 matrix) a few years ago before the prices went nuts. I actually had this "back in the day" as I had heard about it from a local record shop (Shirl's Record Whirl in Holyoke, MA) when I was a teenager so I had her special order me a copy. The release of these stereo mixes on CD kinda ruined the novelty of this LP as it's not the best vinyl I've ever owned but it does make for an interesting story. -

Just finished: Jazz At The Flamingo - 10th Anniversary Tribute (Ember Records/Future Noise). This is a various artists compilation that I picked up cheap at Acoustic Sounds a few years back. Good stuff. It's still there for $15 if you're looking for an addition to your cart for free shipping. Now playing - Baritone Madness - Heavy Berries (Swing Master). I found this one in a dollar bin years ago and rarely play it. As much as I like bari sax, the music isn't very compelling. -
Bobby Hutcherson Boxed Set
Kevin Bresnahan replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'm going to pass on this one too. With the exception of the previously unissued alternate takes, I have all of it in one form or another. Also, I got laid off last year and I'm sort of in semi-retirement & this is not where I want my entertainment budget going at this time. -
Tommy Flanagan - Positive Intensity (Sony/Japan). Tommy with Ron Cater & Roy Haynes from 1977. Nicely done if a bit too brightly presented on the Japanese CD I found in a used bin yesterday.

Toshiko Akiyoshi - Just Be-Bop (Diskmate/SS Jazz). Pretty date with Charles McPherson playing as he usually does on a be-bop date.

Today is bandcamp Friday. If you like baritone saxophone, you would be doing yourself and an artist, Claire Daly, a big favor by supporting her today. Due to her recent cancer diagnosis, she's in a tough spot financially and could use any money that comes her way. If you're into vinyl, her latest, "VuVu For Frances" sounds really good on my turntable.

Randy Brecker in straight-ahead sessions

That is a good one. -
I was able to get these because a friend's brother-in-law decided to give his up and the Patriots let him transfer the tickets to me.

I've become a Patriots season ticket holder this year. My daughter is ecstatic and can't wait for the season to start. I am not sure what to make of them drafting Drake Maye with the 3rd pick. I was really hoping they'd draft Marvin Harrison Jr. as I think he'd make any QB, including newly re-signed Jacoby Brissett, look good & I think he'd bring some electricity to the team.

I remember on the old Blue Note bulletin board when Greg Maltz used to go on & on about this needing to be reissued on CD. It was even funnier when it came out in the Mosaic box and he still wanted it out separately so we could get the full artwork. -
So here we are, a year later and I never did receive the CD I pre-ordered & paid for. Jim, you're a great keyboard player but you're not a great businessman.
