Day one with my new Oticon hearings aids. My right ear has an almost constant whoosh/hiss because they had to boost the high frequencies so much. I have to turn that ear down a lot so that it isn't the only thing I hear. They come with a pre-programmed "Music Mode" that actually makes the music sound worse. Let's see how this goes. I have a 30 day trial period now.

Dan has posted pictures of some damage to his barn on Facebook but other than that, he sounds like he weathered it ok. He says, “Horses and people ok”.

WCVB out of Boston has this on their weather page: A storm surge of 10-15' is possibly around Tampa Bay south to Fort Myers. If it hits Tampa it will be the worst storm to hit there in the past 100 years. Edit to add: The right side of the track is typically where find the strongest winds. On the left side its the torrential rains. Over a foot is possible. Tornadoes are also likely when a hurricane moves inland.

Not trying to be an alarmist, but I've read a couple of reports that say that Milton strengthening so far off shore with the expectation that it would weaken before it makes land is much worse, because it causes the hurricane to widen dramatically and intensifies the storm surge, which makes Tampa Bay very vulnerable. I've read one report that said that over 50% of Tampa Bay is less than 10 feet above sea level. Tampa Bay could be in serious trouble.

Covid Still Sucks
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I know about 3 people that are going through it again right now. It's still a problem but just not as deadly a problem. I'll be getting another booster in a few weeks as they roll them out with the latest variants covered. -
Funny... if this was released on one of Boris Rose's LPs, you couldn't sell it on discogs. But when Jordi puts it out on Fresh Sounds, it's fine. Still a bootleg. 1981 is way way out of the public domain is Spain, where this CD set was released. Too bad Sal's family couldn't get a cut of this. They could probably use it.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
Kevin Bresnahan replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
While still a fun night of bari sax, I was pretty bummed out that both Charlie Kohlhase & Allan Chase came down with Covid and couldn't make the gig. Get well soon guys. I was also a bit saddened to learn that Claire Daly couldn't make it because she is in the middle of a new treatment for her cancer. Today is Bandcamp Friday - if you like bari sax, go check out Claire Daly's music there and buy something to try and throw a little love her way. -
Eddie Higgins - Smoke Gets In Your Eyes (Venus). Higgins in a quartet with Scott Hamilton. Beautiful playing all around.

I would not enjoy this live at all. To my ears, this is not enjoyable. https://relativepitchrecords.bandcamp.com/album/glass-triangle FWIW, I was playing this and my wife asked what the hell was playing. "That's terrible," sayeth the wife. -

Must be me, but "chaos" & music don't seem to fit together. -
Was Bill Perkins Supposed To Record For impulse!?
Kevin Bresnahan replied to JSngry's topic in Discography
I've had this CD for years and always enjoyed it. I think I bought it because it said that Perkins played baritone on it and I almost always buy something with a bari on it. Turns out that he only plays the bari on two tunes, and one, 'Groover Wailin'', is one of the songs where Feldman plays some sort of organ that sounds weird to me. I'm not keen on it. -
Jazz CDs from Japan - Some Rarities
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I'm going to leave this thread up here for one more day before I close it & move it over to the Steve Hoffman forums. I'm pretty surprised that I didn't get much interest here. I hope I get more interest over there. This was the first selloff of what I was hoping would be a clearing out of a bunch of CDs in my racks so I'm now wondering if there is any market out there. -
He was off the scene for 3 years recovering from a bout with prostate cancer: https://jazztimes.com/archives/mark-elf-glad-to-be-back/ I haven't seen him playing in the Boston area for a long while but he did an interview in 2020: https://jazzguitartoday.com/2020/12/reflections-from-jazz-guitar-maestro-mark-elf/

What live music are you going to see tonight?

This Thursday night (10/3/2024) at the Regattabar in Cambridge, MA there's a show being billed as "Big Boston Baritone Benefit", with 4 baritone sax players putting on a show to raise money for baritone saxophonist Claire Daly's Go Fund Me to help her pay her medical bills stemming from her cancer treatments. This should be fun for us bari fans. They'll have 4 bari players up there - Melanie Brooks, Alan Chase, Charlie Kohlhase & Kathy Olson - backed by a p/b/d rhythm section. https://www.ticketweb.com/event/big-boston-baritone-benefit-regattabar-tickets/13573404?pl=regatta -
One of the weirdest album covers I own. Is he trying to convey that his saxophone is like baby Jesus in a manger? I mean... he looks like he's praying over it and those are sheep in the background, right?

She'll always be Professor McGonagall from Harry Potter or Grandmama from Downton Abbey in my house. My family truly enjoyed her in both of those.

As I understand it, the first batch of Connoisseur releases were the rarest Blue Note LP titles, with Tina Brooks' "True Blue" likely the rarest of them all. I seem to remember an eBay auction back then where someone paid close to $10,000 for a copy. It's not surprising then, that his name was not well known in Europe because it was not really well known in the US until the Mosaic box.

What live music are you going to see tonight?

I'm planning to see Wingspan at Scullers Saturday night. This show, celebrating the music of Mulgrew Miller has Steve Nelson on vibes, Duane Eubanks on trumpet, Steve Wilson on saxophone, Benito Gonzalez in the piano chair, Nat Reeves on bass, & Carl Allen on drums. At this point, I'm wondering if the show is going to happen as there are not many tickets sold. This is becoming a problem here in the Boston area. -
ORNETTE COLEMAN - ROUND TRIP: ORNETTE COLEMAN ON BLUE NOTE
Kevin Bresnahan replied to dougcrates's topic in Re-issues
Denardo may be honoring his father's wishes, which is not a bad thing in my book.
