Stefan Looks like I won the Bill Evans set. Payment sent. Looking forward to it.

Really like the new Electric Masada two disc set. I also really like the Satlah trio. They have a nice blend of jazz and the Rad Jewish Culture. And the band's kid sax player (Danny Zamir) has some major chops.

Yeah, SF Jazz 2005 edition looks pretty good. Only problem is, with shipping and tax it comes out to be $45.52. Thats pretty steep for a 2 CD set. Still thinking about it...

Complete Felsted Jazz Recordings Box

Slightly off topic -- I wonder what happened to the Buddy Rich set. It's off of the "Future Projects" list but not in the "Upcoming Releases". Hmm...perhaps lost in the Mosaic void? -

As an aside, the following is from the Red Trumpet site concerning this set: "PLEASE NOTE: There has been a list price change from $54.98 to $109.98 and our site has been updated. We will honor the original price for all those that have placed their orders! In other words, although it has changed we do not feel that it is appropriate to cancel your orders! Thanks!" Looks like some people are honoring the original price - incorrect or not. Unfortunatley, I didn't pre-order it. -

Just out of curiosity I checked what the guy who bought the Phillips/Ventura set has been doing recently on eBay. He seems to be on a Mosaic hunt. His last seven wins are all Mosaic sets and he's spent over $3000. Ah, yes, the Mosaic obsession...

I gotta say that I love this set. I only had a couple of V5 CDs before I bought this set so it was a bit of a chance. I love the inside/outside stuff these guys do. Really like the sound of the disks too. You get a real club-y almost like your there atmosphere. And, when they get going at full skronk, watch out... -
From the new "Cannonball In Europe" CD booklet : "Much of the archives from this unique seven-year festival has been lost to time. But this album AND A FORTHCOMING DVD OF THE 1965 PERFORMANCE OF THE JOHN COLTRANE QUARTET are documents of important performances that will insure the memory of this unique festival" - Michael Cuscuna, 2005 This is the first I've heard of it. Can't wait.

Clearing out what's left...

Good morning. Emailed you about the Byrd. -
Well, thanks to the link in the original post, I won the auction. It finished at around $213. It's been a while since this was on my radar screen, but it does seem that this set used to go for a lot more. Really looking forward to diving in with both feet.

Well, if I'm not mistaken, the Four Freshman and this set are the first Mosaics for vocalists, aren't they? Myself, I wouldn't at all mind a Joe Williams Roulette Mosaic. There's some good stuff in there, aside from the two sets that came out on the Williams/Sweets reissue a few years back. Not to pile on or anything but don't forget the Anita O'Day set. One of my personal favorites.

The "Kenton Presents" is now gone. The "Gene Krupa/Harry James" now on the Last Chance list.

For what it's worth, the new "Smile" got a 5-star review in the new Rolling Stone. In Rolling Stone 5-star reviews are few and far between.

Complete Argo/Mercury Art Farmer/Benny Golson/

Mosaic actually sent me an unsolicited replacement for one of the Miles LPs that apparently had a manufacturing problem. Only thing was that I hadn't bought the whole set (only the booklet). I guess they choose to err on the safe side. -
!!! Yeah, I know. Guess I'm trying to get on Michael C.'s christmas list...

Thanks for the responses. I've really been enjoying the Pee Wee bio. I'll probably have to pick this set up. ...Oh, hell, who am I kidding - Of course I'll pick this set up. Maybe sooner than later.

90+ at last count. The only two OOP CD sets that I don't have are the Amos Milburn and the Master Jazz Piano boxes. Hey, everyone needs a hobby...

Just wondering if there were any thoughts about the Prima/Manone Mosaic set. I'm currently reading the Robert Hilbert Pee Wee Russell biography and he has a lot of nice things to say about Pee Wee's playing during his time with Prima. Hilbert seems to say that this is important music that (at the time the book was written) was out of print mostly due to the fact that jazz people had a problem with Prima's "style". So, any impressions out there? Thanks.

Kevin Lately I've been doing some A/B comparisons of some late '90s JRVG releases vs. the Mosaic versions that were done some years earlier. On some of them there's quite a bit of difference - especially using headphones. Many times the Mosaics - especially from the 90's on - sound better (at least to me) than the recent RVG releases. I just wonder what Cuscuna thinks when these "different" sounding versions that come out on Blue Note. I wonder if he still thinks the Mosaics are better. He did, after all, produce both versions for reissue. It's only the remastering that's different.

The Rosolino part of this set is a favorite. It *really* turned me on to the playing of Charlie Mariano. Really nice stuff.
-
YES! I wonder why there was never an LP version of the "Jack Johnson" sessions...
-
Now, *that's* a good question. I haven't upgraded to RVG that often (the Monks and Powells come to mind - which were actually good). I recently bought the JRVGs of both Grant Green's "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and Jackie Mclean's "It's Time". You know the ones in the LP replica sleeves. I know it's subjective but, compared to the Mosaic versions of both, the JRVGs are terrible. He's taken the warm stereo spread of the Cuscuna version and made it sound a like listening to a mono version over an AM radio. That being said, I'm considering getting the new RVG Mclean. Guess I'll never learn.

I used the free shipping as an excuse to order the Johnny Smith set. Interestingly it was delivered by UPS instead of their normal carrier Airborne. I wonder if Mosaic got a deal with UPS...
