And many of those years with George Steinbrenner. Couldn't have been easy. During the Yankee broadcast today, they played an interview with Susan Waldman, one of the radio announcers. She related how, in 1992, Bernie Williams, in his second year with the Yankees made a play that helped to cost the Yankees a game. Steinbrenner called Gene Michael and said - I want that guy off my team. Trade him. Two weeks later, Steinbrenner called Michael and said - He's still on the team. What's going on? Michael's reply was - I called every team in both leagues, and nobody wants him. No doubt a lie, but it turned out to be a smart move by Michael. I've also heard a story that Steinbrenner wanted to trade Mariano Rivera when he was a rookie, and Michael talked him out of that one.
